DOJ Home Page George Washington Appoints First Marshals - 1789 The offices of U.S. Marshal and Deputy Marshals were created more than 200 years ago by the first Congress in the Judiciary Act of 1789, the same legislation that established the federal judicial system. The Marshals were given extensive authority to support the federal courts within their judicial districts and to carry out all lawful orders issued by judges, Congress, or the President. The Marshals and their Deputies served the subpoenas, summonses, writs, warrants, and other process issued by the courts, made all the arrests, and handled all the prisoners. They also disbursed the money. The Marshals paid the fees and expenses of the court clerks, U.S. Attorneys, jurors, and witnesses. They rented the courtrooms and jail space and hired the bailiffs, criers, and janitors. They made sure the prisoners were present, the jurors were available, and the witnesses were on time. Thus, the Marshals also provided local representation for the federal government within their districts. They took the national census every 10 years through 1870. They distributed Presidential proclamations, collected a variety of statistical information on commerce and manufacturing, supplied the names of government employees for the national register, and performed other routine tasks needed for the central government to function effectively. Over the past 200 years, Congress and the President also have called on the Marshals to carry out unusual or extraordinary missions, such as registering enemy aliens in time of war, capturing fugitive slaves, sealing the American border against armed expeditions from foreign countries, and swapping spies with the former Soviet Union.

1796 The country first celebrated the birthday of George Washington during the last full year he was president. 1866 One year after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, both houses of Congress gathered for a memorial address on his birthday, February 12. Although Lincoln's birthday became a holiday in many states, it never became an official federal holiday.

George Washington - Our First President/US Royalty
George Washington has roots to both Lady Diana Spencer's family (as her eighth cousin seven times removed) and to the English, French, and Polish Crowns. This will be explained in connecting links. George Washington was born on February 22, 1732 at Pope's Creek, Virginia. He died on December 14, 1799 at Mount Vernon, Virginia. At his death, Washington owned 33,000 + acres of land, including over 23,000 acres in Virginia, 5,000 acres in Kentucky, large tracts in Maryland, New York, and the Northwest Territory. He owned corporate stocks worth over $25,000 and he owned 640 sheep, 329 cows, horses and mules. Washington also owned hundreds of slaves. He even named one of his "slaves" in his will: "Mulatto Man William" was given his freedom. At the age of twenty-seven (27), George Washington married Martha Dandridge Curtis , a wealthy Virginia widow with two children. Martha was his primary beneficiary in his will. George Washington died without any natural children. George left Mount Vernon to his nephew

China's objections to President George W. Bush's planned missile shield will not sway the US leader's determination to field such a system, the White House said Monday. Bush "has made very clear that he believes that the job of the commander in chief is to protect the people of the United States from accidental or rogue launch of a ballistic missile," said Bush spokesman Ari Fleischer. "The president is going to continue to consult with our allies, consult with Russia, consult with the Chinese, but he has made perfectly plain that he intends to protect our country from any such launch," the official said. China has cautiously welcomed talks between the United States and Russia on the vexed issue of the planned US missile defense shield, while warning the "global strategic balance" should be maintained. "Maintaining the global strategic balance and stability is a matter of concern for the security interests of all nations, especially the nuclear declared nations," a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said late Friday.
