Secondary teacher certification (grades 9-12)
Undergraduate Masters programs Post-AB Program (part-time)
All teacher education majors except some middle school students are required to double major in a subject area. This requirement ensures that students have a firm grounding in the liberal arts and sciences; widens their prospects for employment upon graduation; and enables them to return for graduate study in their second major field if they so desire. Middle school and secondary teacher education students will double major in the subject area they expect to teach. The State of Missouri requires specific content in those majors; please consult an education advisor for more specific information. In addition all teacher education students must complete the State of Missouri's general education requirements which are:
One course each from two of the following fields: Two courses in English Composition One course each in:
  • American History American Government Economics (Elementary only) or any Social Science elective (Secondary) Physical or Earth Science (Laboratory work required) Biological Science (Laboratory work required) Oral Communications College-level mathematics (two courses for Middle School)

Post-A.B. Teacher Certification Program
The Post-A.B. (P.A.B.) Teacher Certification Program is designed for those with a baccalaureate degree who desire secondary (9-12) or middle school (5-9) teacher certification without seeking another degree. Secondary and middle school can be done together if all requirements for both programs are met including two student teaching experiences. Course work may be completed on a part-time basis through University College (the evening division of the College of Arts and Sciences), which offers substantially lower tuition than the day school. Course work is taken for undergraduate credit. This program leads to teacher certification only; no degree is granted through this program. For General Education requirements, please see the teacher certification page. Subject Area Requirements To achieve certification through this program students will need to fulfill State requirements in three fields: general education, the teaching subject area, and professional education. Washington University offers post-baccalaureate secondary teacher certification programs in the following areas: Art, Classics (Latin), English, Mathematics, Modern Foreign Languages (K-12) (French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Russian), Unified Science (Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics), and Social Studies (usually History or Political Science major). Art and foreign languages are K-12 certifications; all other areas are for grades 9-12. Middle school (5-9) teacher certification can be done in Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, or English. This program assumes that entering students already have a major or the equivalent of a major in the subject area they wish to teach. Nevertheless students should expect to take some subject area course work to meet Missouri requirements.

Teacher Certification Program (TCP)
Overview
The University of Washington, Tacoma, offers a field-based Elementary Education Teacher Certification program. The program is a full-time, "fifth year" course of study and practice designed for people who hold a bachelor's degree. Students are admitted to the program each summer, and progress as a cohort community through four quarters of study and extensive field experiences in urban schools. This program is intended to prepare teachers for urban school teaching. Master teachers and university faculty work together to provide interns with a program that ensures integration of course content with hands-on experience. Site placements in partnership schools begin in late summer and continue through the remainder of the program. Multiculturalism is emphasized throughout the program, both in course work and within the internships. The curriculum features introduction to teaching in all areas of the elementary and middle school curriculum, preparation for non-curricular aspects of the teacher's role, reflection on contemporary issues in education, and frequent supervision.
