Several species of dragon lizards once occurred in woodland or heathland habitats along the harbour. Most of these have not adapted to intensive urban development and are now restricted to remnant areas of relatively undisturbed bushland or reserves, one of these, the Bearded Dragon, Pogona barbata , is now uncommon in the area. Only one, the Eastern Water Dragon, Physignathus lesueurii , still occurs commonly in the area. This large lizard species lives mainly along waterways and has adapted to a range of environments from the harbour foreshores to northern suburb gardens next to creeks. Draco
Draco is a genus of reptiles, often refered to as the flying dragons. All members of this genus have a wing-like flap of skin on either side of their body. These flaps are supported by elongated rib bones. Species in this genus live in tropical rainforests, and the flaps are used for gliding from tree to tree. Members of this genus can glide very efficiently, and lose little height over long distances. These reptiles stay in the trees for most of their lives, though the female returns to the ground, to bury her eggs in the soil. There are 16 species of flying dragon. The following are described on this page:

There are over 2000 species of lizards but only a few make good pets. There is little doubt that Leopard geckos (Eublepharis macularius) and Bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps) make suitable pets that are relatively easy to care for. Others, particularly the Green iguana (Iguana iguana) and monitors (Varanus spp) can grow very large and can be aggressive, while chameleons (Chameleo spp) can be very delicate and require more specialised care. Housing Consider arboreal (tall vivarium), terrestrial (long vivarium) and aquatic requirements (aquarium, large water bowl). For the bearded dragons and leopard geckos, simple terrestrial arrangements are adequate. Lizards tend to be much more active than snakes and must have plenty of room (e.g. neonatal leopard gecko can be maintained in a 30cmx20cm enclosure while an adult green iguana requires at least 2mx2mx1.5m, if not more. Any enclosure must be escape proof, with most made of plastic coated melamine, fibreglass or glass. Glass aquariums must have a completely mesh lid to ensure adequate ventilation, while melamine and fiberglass vivaria should have several ventilation panels. Access via lockable doors or lids permits appropriate cleaning. There is a tendency for owners to set-up naturalistic enclosures but more important is the hygiene of the captive environment and the need to routinely clean the enclosure. Newspaper and artificial grass (Astroturf) work well and can be more easily replaced or cleaned than the more expensive particulate materials such as sand or bark chips which must be replaced regularly. There is also a danger of ingestion and impaction, particularly with sand.

Volume 3 Number 2 March 1, 1999 Off to see the Lizards - by Laurie Fumea (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review) May 31, 1998 Even without Moe and Curly, Larry is quite a character. The
bearded dragon and his owner, Georgete Suskie of Johnstown, drew a crowd at a recent Pittsburgh Herpetological Society meeting in the education center of the Pittsburgh Zoo in Highland Park. "They're (bearded dragons) very personable," said Suskie, adding the demonstrations and programs she gives help "break down barriers" between the human and reptile worlds. And that's the main goal of the society - to foster an appreciation of all reptiles and amphibians through husbandry, conservation and education. Many of the group's monthly meetings feature speakers, such as Suskie and three others who recently presented programs - Swantje Willms of East Liberty (newts and salamanders), Allan Taylor of Swissvale (water dragons) and Dolly Ellerbrock of Morningside (giant common green iguanas).
The programs and tips are designed to educate reptile enthusiasts and potential owners. "I go over the basics about water dragons - what to look for and set up," said Taylor.
He said he enjoys the dragons because they are easy to maintain. "They handle very well," he said.

Animals of the RRRS - LIZARDS Green Iguana Spiny Tailed Iguana Green Anole Nile Monitor ... Chinese Water Dragon GREEN IGUANA (Iguana iguana) I Iguanas can attain a length of 40-79 inches (101-200 cm.). These animals are mainly arboreal and can be found in large trees with dense canopies, especially in humid areas. They seem to prefer branches near or overhanging water, so if threatened, may leap to the ground or dive into water, escaping danger. Their diet consists of fruit, vegetables, and some flowers. When young, iguanas will also eat insects. In defense: Iguanas have small sharp teeth which may be used to help tear apart large leaves, making them easier to swallow. These teeth also can be used for biting their enemies, causing a serious flesh wound (in animal or human). Iguanas tails are used as a rudder when swimming under water; the front and back legs are pressed against their body making them streamline. If any enemy grabs an iguana by the tail, the tail can be broken off at will, wiggling around which distracts the enemy, while the iguana runs to safety. The tail will regenerate, but will never be as nice as the original tail. As a defense, the tail is used as a whip, which is powerful enough to break a small dogs leg! Iguanas nails are long and sharp, aiding them in climbing. These nails can also be used in defense by tearing at an enemy.
