This 65 cm lizard lacks the blue and green colours found in the Gippsland Water Dragon Physignathus howittii.
Adult male Eastern Water Dragons instead have bright blood red bellies. Some males exceed 90 cm, and fighting between males during the breeding season is common.
Males appear to be territorial and all females within a given males territory are under his 'control'. Immature specimens are apparently not affected by the territorial behavior of adult males.
The Eastern Water dragon is found along the east coast from south of Sydney (NSW) to Cape York (QLD).
It is common for specimens to drop from a great height out of a tree and into a creek below when disturbed. These lizards are also known to inhabit rocky areas adjacent to beaches and also live around mangrove swamps. A preferred habitat of this lizard is areas infested with the introduced weed Lantana Lantana camara , which afford it impenetrable protection.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary © 1994 by Merriam-Webster, Incorporated Water Dragons are Old World lizards that are most often imported from Thailand and southern China, although can also be found in Burma, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Guangxi Zhuangzu and Guandong. The Green Water Dragon, also known as the Chinese Water Dragon, Physignathus cocincinus was first discovered in Vietnam. The P.lesueurii comes from Australia. Green water dragons grow to about 36 inches in length, with the males being the large of the species. Maturity is usually attained within two years and the average length is 27-28 inches. Water dragons can be found living near water and heavily forested areas including rain-forests. Their diet is omnivorous as they consume insects, fruits, plants and vegetation. Green water dragons are predominately green in color with a brownish striping pattern on the tail. Along the bottom jaw line the scales go from off white to a vivid pink. The Australian water dragon overall color is in the brown tones. The intensity of coloration for these lizards is predominately related to their emotional state.

Who says dragons aren't personable?
Christmas critters...
Well, it's 1999 and I trust everyone out there had a great Christmas Holiday and a great New Year's Eve. And for any of you reptile and amphibian fanatics, I hope that Santa Claus fulfilled your wishes and got you all the cold-blooded companions you may have wanted for Christmas. I myself, became the proud 'father' of a Diamond Back Terrapin which needed a good home. (A Christmas gift from me to me!)
Here be dragons...
This month, we would like to write about two of the most fascinating, and personable kinds of lizards you could keep as pets — and they are both DRAGONS.
Aaaahhh!
But have no fear! Even though these little fellas don't have the vocabulary of their television and movie counterparts, they are friendly and easy to handle.
We're talking about the Asian (or Green) Water Dragon and the Australian Bearded Dragon. Both of these species have been available in the pet industry for a few years but neither has enjoyed more attention as potential pets than they are getting right now. Thanks to numerous breeders across Canada and the U.S., both of these species are now readily available in the pet industry and their price seems to drop further with every passing year. It was only a couple of years ago that a good price for a Bearded Dragon would be in the $200-250 range, for a juvenile. Now, if you pay more than $100-125 for a juvenile, you are paying too much! And, these days, Asian Water Dragons can be purchased for as little as $39.95.

Lizards belong to the suborder Laceritilia of the order Squamata , which they share with the amphisbaenians and the snakes. Most herpetologist agree that the lizards fall into some 18 to 20 families with a total number of about 320 to 370 genera, over 3000 species. The Geckos The Iguanas The Agamids The Skinks ... Family Gekkonidae-The Geckos
There are about 90 genra and over 700 species in this large family. Approximately 75% of all gecko species are nocturnal as evidenced by the structure of the eyes, the pupils which contract to the narrowest of vertical slits during the daytime. Many species have adhesive pads ( lamellae ) on the digits. Under the microscope, these lamellae can be seen to consist of rows of tiny hooks that can grip into imperfections in the most apparently smooth surfaces. Below are a few geckos that are fairly easy to keep and are commomly captive bred. Leopard Gecko( Eublepharis macularius -The leopard gecko is a large-headed, robust species with movable eyelids. At a length of a foot (30 cm), it is one of the larger pet geckos. It is commonly bred in captivity. Provide it with a dry, heated terrarium with a gravel substrate and a couple of plants. Daytime tempatures of 72-82'F , dropping to 56-62'F at night are adequate. Feeds on a variety of invertebrates. Leopard geckos are very easy to keep and are recommended as a first time gecko. They are not very fast so if one was to get away it would not be to hard to catch. They are relatively inexpensive and captive breeding is very common (the internet has quite a few captive breeders for the leopard gecko).
