Program:
A series of modules exploring life's most precious resource, water and how it affects the plants and animals that live on, in and near it. Programs are based in and around the Reserve's catchment of mountains, streams and ponds, and the unique artificial mini wetlands (Biological Aquatic System) used to treat waste water at the Visitor Centre. The modules will include features and importance of wetlands, water sampling and analysis, catching critters, adaptions, ecosystems, water and nutrient cycling, and management of wetlands. Most modules are 1 and a half hours in duration. Visits consists of 1 to 2 modules. Class sizes are a maximum of 2 classes. Programs relate to SOSE, HSIE and Science subjects.

Who Killed Sally Swamphen Students observe behaviour and record special features of wetland wildlife to try to solve a who-dun-it. Binoculars, beaks and bones are used to assist students in their quest for the killer. Suitable for middle - upper primary
All About the Wetlands This module focuses on finding out first hand about wetland life and identifying features of animals and plants. Students will catch water critters, handle skulls and skeletons, record animal calls and bird watch.

Waste Waster Treatment
The pollution of groundwater and oceans by sewage and other contaminants is an extremely serious environmental problem. Not only do intensive human settlements release quantities of effluent far above the natural carrying capacity of the surrounding environment, but the problem has been exacerbated by the removal, or "reclaimation", of wetlands which previously would have absorbed the material. In the wrong place sewage is a dangerous problem, containing pathogenic microorganisms and organic pollutants, however it is also a nutrient-rich resource, for a truly sustainable approach to dealing with sewage to be born this is how we must view it. Sewage as Problem
Sewage contains pathogenic organisms dangerous to health, as well as other pollutants, and can cause disturbance of natural ecosystems due to high levels of organic materials entering the system. 26 billion litres of sewage is produced everyday in the UK, of which 1.4 billion is discharged untreated into the sea. The high levels of organic matter can cause eutrophication of the water, basically high levels of biological productivity which can alter the ecosystem balance. Eutrophic waters are characterized by the presence of highly dense phytoplankton crops called algal blooms. This increased productivity can change the entire ecosystem of the water body due to the greater food output and reduced oxygen in deep water. Extreme cases of eutrophication, hypertrophication, result in noxious algal blooms which can kill vast numbers of fish and render shellfish etc poisoness to eat.

Water ecology There is a need in many areas of our community for people with environmental education. The outlook for the future is brighter than ever before for those planning to work within the environmental field, and as the threat to our environment rises, so does the need for knowledgeable people, to help combat this growing problem. People who care about our planet are important! The Water Ecology Course is 44 weeks long. The school is ideally situated on the banks of the East Dalarna river , overlooking Lake Siljan. Within easy reach of the school there is a wide variety of interesting water ways, all of which can be incorporated and studied during the course. Much of the education is practical in content and carried out on site, i.e. inventories of interesting habitats, map reading and learning how to use GPS and GIS equipment. Field courses involve travelling, enabling participants to study nature from another angle. The course also includes working to restore lakes and streams, liming of these areas and the biogeographical study of the surroundings. ECOLOGICAL SUBJECTS

Unit Overview
This unit enables students to analyze the environmental and economic impact of uncontrolled chemical dumping. Students have an opportunity to evaluate water quality by measuring the abundance and diversity of organisms, clarity, dissolved oxygen concentration, pH, and the presence of nitrates, phosphates and coliforms. Sections in the unit include toxic waste dumping and water ecology. Exercises in the unit include measuring toxic waste, diversity of life, the clarity of water samples, dissolved oxygen in water samples, pH, and measuring the concentration of nitrates , phosphates, and coliforms in water samples.
