In addition, the Division is responsible for the non-coal surface mining program and illegal coal mining under the Tennessee Coal Surface Mining Law of 1980, as amended. Under the Water Quality Control Act, municipal, industrial and other discharges of wastewater must obtain a permit from the Division. Approximately, 1,700 permits have been issued under the federally delegated National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). These permits establish pollution control and monitoring requirements based on protection of designated uses through implementation of water quality standards and other applicable state and federal rules. Additional information about the permits issued by the Division of Water Pollution Control is found in the Environmental Permitting Handbook The Division conducts inspections of facilities, samples discharges for compliance and pursues enforcement as necessary. Appeals of the Division's permitting and enforcement actions are heard by the Tennessee Water Quality Control Board.

NITRATE POLLUTION OF WATER BY AGRICULTURE
Stay informed - Sign up for our email alert service Nitrate levels in many English waters, both ground and surface waters, are increasing. Nitrate pollution is of concern because it has to be removed before water can be supplied to consumers, and it can harm the water environment. Over 70% of nitrate enters water from agricultural land. The following pages provide details of action to reduce agricultural nitrate pollution, which is one aspect of the broader problem of diffuse pollution from agriculture. We are also taking action to reduce similar pollution from other sources. For example, the Urban Waste Water Treatment Regulations 1994 aim to reduce pollution, including nitrate pollution, from sewage treatment works and industry.

Water Environment Federation Supports EPA's Water Quality Trading Policy
New Document Is Positive Step in Use of Trading to Achieve Water Quality Goals Source: Water Environment Federation ALEXANDRIA, VA The Water Environment Federation (WEF) today welcomed the release of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Water Quality Trading Policy. According to WEF Executive Director, Bill Bertera, "WEF supports many of the provisions in the Policy and believes it is a positive step towards recognizing trading as a tool to achieve water quality improvements. Overall, the Federation strongly supports the concept of trading as an innovative approach to reaching water quality goals." The purpose of the Policy is to encourage states, interstate agencies, and tribes to develop and implement voluntary water quality trading programs that facilitate implementation of TMDLs, reduce the costs of compliance with Clean Water Act regulations, establish incentives for voluntary reductions, and promote watershed-based initiatives. As a follow-up to EPA's "Framework for Watershed-Based Effluent Trading", the Policy draws upon lessons learned from pilot programs and state experiences developing water quality trading programs conducted since the September 1996 document was released.

Second National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals reveals chemicals in our bodies
The CDC's Second National Exposure Report provides a snapshot of the levels of some 116 chemicals in Americans' bodies. Some of these chemicals, like mercury , are known to be highly toxic, even in small amounts. For others, like tungsten , we have very little knowledge of their toxicity.
Some of the substances get into our bodies after being emitted by industrial facilities as pollution; others come from the foods we eat, natural sources, past pollution, or a combination of all three.
Scorecard can give you the facts on what we know about the health effects of many of these chemicals and where they come from. For more information, click here Pollution Locator

Home Environmental Protection Rivers Water Quality Information Rivers Lakes Groundwater Bathing Waters Rivers Introduction River Monitoring River Monitoring Results Some 15,445 km of waterways appear on the 1:50,000 Ordnance Survey map of Northern Ireland. Rivers are important natural resources particularly for agriculture, fisheries, recreational use, amenity value and as sources of drinking water. Around 13% of drinking water in NI is abstracted from rivers, and many waterways also support ecological habitats and species of national and international importance.
Some of these uses can threaten the water quality of the rivers on which they depend, and there may be pollution from other activities in the surrounding catchment. Pollution can be from point sources such as industrial or sewage effluent discharges, or can be diffuse such as road or agricultural run-off. Ultimately, the pollution entering rivers can make its way to the marine environment to adversely affect estuarine and coastal water quality.

Health and Environment Library Module on Water Quality, Water Supply and Sanitation
Freshwater of acceptable quality is a critical imperative for sustainable development worldwide. Water is a finite resource essential for agriculture, forestry, industry, indeed for human existence itself. Water quality is an integrated indicator of global environmental change and of local and regional environmental pollution impacts. Drinking water quality has been a constant subject of concern to WHO which resulted in the publication of standards and guidelines.
Availability and use of adequate, safe water supplies and hygienic means of waste disposal are major components of primary health care and are also priority elements in WHO's Health for All Strategy. WHO has been one of the agencies involved in the International Decade for Water Supply and Sanitation and has carried out a permanent monitoring of the status of water supply and sanitation services coverage. Despite massive efforts and investments during the course of the Decade which provided access to safe water supplies to an additional 1,347 million people, and sanitation facilities for some 748 million, it appeared that over 1,200 million people, 30 percent of the developing world's population, still lacked access to safe water and 1,700 million (40 percent) were without adequate sanitation at the end of the decade. WHO is therefore pursuing its efforts in this field to reach the goal of water for all by the year 2000.

A National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Center since 1999 Water Quality is a critical factor affecting human health and welfare. Any advance in our ability to preserve or enhance the quality of our water supplies is likely to come through state-of-the-art research. Center Mission and Rationale
The Arizona Water Quality Center consists of a prestigious group of research scientists within The University of Arizona (UA) and Arizona State University (ASU). Being a multi-university Center enhances the ability of both universities to achieve national status in the field. This interdisciplinary group of microbiologists, chemists, physicists, hydrologists, and engineers work together to resolve water quality problems. Funding for the Center is supplied by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and a variety of companies and agencies that are interested in specific water quality issues. This dynamic industry-university relationship makes the Arizona Water Quality Center unique. The combination of university expertise and corporate and government funding leads to scientific discoveries that can enhance water quality for the community at large.
