Columbus, Ohio
WHO ARE WE We are Mid-Ohio Water Ski Club, founded in 1971 and headquartered on the Scioto River near the north end of O'Shaughnessy Reservoir. Supported in our efforts by the City of Columbus Department of Parks and Recreation and Columbus Water Division, our purpose is to promote and encourage recreational and competition water skiing in the Central Ohio area. CLUB AREA AND FACILITIES As the only ski club based at O'Shaughnessy, we have a contract with the City to provide a safe and clean ski area for our members and fellow skiers. The water area is licensed to us by the City and is designated by the City of Columbus as a "controlled access tournament skiing area" and is marked as such by buoys. The area is restricted for use by tournament skiers in training. In order to promote safety, the public is asked to refrain from using the area for other recreational purposes when club members or non-member recreational skiers are using the area to practice tournament skiing. Club funds and member efforts are used to purchase and maintain the tournament skiing equipment located in the area. Features
  • Non-profit, reasonable fees

All the rules that apply to power boats also apply to boats towing skiers, and there are some extra rules.
  • On weekdays you may ski anywhere on the Swan River downstream of the Narrows, provided you are not in a restricted speed area and you stay at least 45 metres from shore.
  • Deep water take-off only, except in ski take off areas.
  • The collision prevention rules still apply in ski areas. This means a ski boat has no priority over a boat that is passing through the area.
General Ski Area Information
On weekends and public holidays on the Swan and Canning Rivers, and every day on other waters, you may only ski in a gazetted ski area and between times allowed for that area. Ski areas are marked by signs on the foreshore and sometimes have their boundaries marked in the water by buoys. The signs will also tell you if there is a direction (clockwise or anti clockwise) you must follow. Rules and Regulations
Age of Person in Charge
The person in charge of the boat must be at least 17 years old. There must also be an observer onboard, at least 14 years old, who constantly watches the skier. Right of Way
A boat landing a skier has right of way over a boat towing a skier taking off.

Associations and Organizations
Water skiing is both a recreational and competitive sport in which participants plane and jump across a surface of water on one or two skis while holding a rope that is being pulled by a motorboat. Some highly skilled individuals ski barefoot. Among the competitions held throughout the world for men and women are the slalom, jumping, and trick ski events. Water skiing was invented by American Ralph Samuelson in 1922 and the first contest was held in 1935 on Long Island, where the first national championship tournament was also staged four years later. This section showcases water skiing associations.

Water skiing
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Water skiing is a sport and recreational activity invented in France in the () and popular in many countries around the world where appropriate conditions exist - an expanse of water unaffected by wave motion. Rivers, lakes, and sheltered bays are all popular for water skiing. Standard water skis, originally made of wood but now usually constructed out of fibreglass -based composites , are of similar length to downhill snow skis but are somewhat wider. Instead of a rigid binding, they have rubber mouldings in which the feet are placed. Skiiers are pulled along by a rope with a handle fitted at one end and attached to a powerboat at the other. Recreational skiers usually learn to ski with a ski on each foot, but as they improve usually progress to using a single ski, placing the other foot into another binding behind the main one. Beginners on two skis are usually pulled along at around 25-35 kilometres per hour, whereas more advanced social skiiers travel at between 40 and 55 kilometres per hour - once confidence is gained it is actually easier to travel faster than at slower speeds because of the greater lift and stability.

16. USA Water Ski Profile
As a recreational Sport. Throughout its history water skiing has closely paralleledthe development of recreational boating in its appeal to the general public.
http://www.usawaterski.org/pages/USA-WS Profile.htm
The Beginning Water skiing was invented in the United States in 1922 when Minnesotan Ralph Samuelson built the first pair of skis and was towed on them behind an outboard-powered boat. What Samuelson originated became an exhibition sport on both sides of the Atlantic in the 1920s and early 1930s. It developed officially into a competitive sport in 1939 when the American Water Ski Association (AWSA) was organized and held the first annual National Water Ski Championships at Jones Beach, Long Island, New York. As a Recreational Sport Throughout its history water skiing has closely paralleled the development of recreational boating in its appeal to the general public. Over the years it has shown almost continuous, sustained growth. Surveys of sports participation show that there are roughly 11 million water skiers in the United States. The Competitive Sport Interest in competitive water skiing has grown considerably over the years and continues to attract many more enthusiasts. USA Water Ski now sanctions more than 800 tournaments each season. These range from small, local events for novices to national and world-level tournaments for more experienced competitors. Male and female skiers of all ages can compete in traditional three-event (slalom, tricks, jumping) tournaments, as well as in tournaments for barefoot, kneeboard, show ski, collegiate, ski race, wakeboard and physically challenged skiers.

From the time Ralph Samuelson strapped on the first water skis in 1922, watersports have increased in popularity. Originally an exhibition sport, water skiing became a competitive sport in 1939 with the development of the American Water Ski Association (USA Water Ski). Today there are almost 11 million water skiers in the United States alone, and thousands more learning each year. The slalom course contains six buoys on alternating sides that the skier must successfully go around while the boat stays on a straight path. The difficulty comes when the rope is shortened, then it is more challenging for the skier to wrap around the buoy. The shorter the rope, the faster you must travel to successfully get from one buoy to the next. The intense acceleration and rocket-like speeds that occur while chasing down the next buoy down are amazing. Wakeboarding

Although water skiing and wakeboarding are the more popular activities, there are other water sports that will equally challenge you in the area of balance, edge control, speed, and physical demand. One example is barefooting: It has become a well-recognized sport since it started as a stunt in 1947. With the help of barefoot booms, padded wetsuits and other equipment, anybody can learn to barefoot ski.
