Designing Web Usability: The Practice of Simplicity
Jakob Nielsen Users experience the usability of a web site before they have committed to using it and before making any purchase decisions. The web is the ultimate environment for empowerment, and he or she who clicks the mouse decides everything. Designing Web Usability is the definitive guide to usability from Jakob Nielsen, the world's leading authority. Over 250,000 Internet professionals around the world have turned to this landmark book, in which Nielsen shares the full weight of his wisdom and experience. From content and page design to designing for ease of navigation and users with disabilities, he delivers complete direction on how to connect with any web user, in any situation. Nielsen has arrived at a series of principles that work in support of his findings: 1) That web users want to find what they're after quickly
2) If they don't know what they're after, they nevertheless want to browse quickly and access information they come across in a logical manner This book is a must-have for anyone who thinks seriously about the web.

Book and Web publishing resources E-publishing The trAce online writing community has just added Opening the Space: Toolkit and Guide which offers masses advice useful for anyone who uses a computer to help them with writing projects, and especially for those who create Web pages, CD-ROMs and other aspects of 'new media'. The MS Word to Web Page: An Academic's Guide to Quick Web Page Construction does what it says but is also an excellent non-specialist introduction to the way XML works. While I consider MS Word a very blunt instrument for creating HTML this guide convinces me that it maybe a suitable sledgehammer for XML. EBONI: Electronic Textbook Design Guidelines is a list of baseline standards for the design of hypertext books. The guidelines were established to encourage the use of styles and techniques that have been most successful in terms of usability and is of interest to online writers and publishers, information professionals, e-book hardware and software developers, and anyone else interested in the creation of scholarly digital resources. Web Publishing Guidelines for UM SPH
Background
The UM School of Public Health (SPH) website promotes the School of Public Health and all of its programs and departments. A major redesign of the site was completed in the fall of 2001 in order to make site navigation easier and create a more consistent look and feel throughout the site. These changes warrant the implementation of web publishing guidelines. The maintenance of the SPH website is a collaborative effort by the Web Administrator (Patty Bradley, PHISA), the Web Content Editor (Mary Beth Lewis, SPH Office of Communications) the Web Content Managers from each academic department (Eszter Gombosi, BIOSTAT; Sue Crawford, EHS; Jackie Cormany, HBHE; Sue Corner, HMP; and Lila Breitner, IC). This web group holds monthly meetings to ensure that the various parts of the website remain consistent, dynamic, and adhere to established guidelines. The Web Administrator is responsible for resolving technical issues, updating and creating new web pages as required and providing web services to the general SPH community. The Web Content Editor is responsible for creating new content for the site (including home page headlines), and editing copy created by others. Each Web Content Manager (WCM) is responsible for maintaining their academic department's portion of the site; all major new site work and design should be contracted to outside sources. Both the Web Administrator and the Web Content Editor assist the WCMs as needed.

    Benefits of ease-of-use
Making your site easy to use will
    • Improve your conversion rate
    • Increase hits
    • Avoid leakage to your competitors. One bad customer experience can cause a customer to abandon a site permanently and result in bad publicity
    • Keep developers focused on important business metrics , such as: conversion rates; revenue per order; acquisition cost per new customer; % repeat buyers; % revenue from repeat buyers; abandoned shopping carts.
    • Lower your support costs . Customers won't need to phone up to check their order went through.
    • Help you keep focused on tasks customers want to achieve, rather than on the web as a technology tool
    • Improve customer satisfaction and show customers you are responsive to their needs
    • Show where you're wasting development time and guide your next moves

What drives repeat visitors to your website?
Publishing on the web is often characterised as a leap into the unknown, with an assumption that the technical aspects of web publishing make it entirely unique. That's why, in many companies large and small, the person in charge of the internal web comes from a technical, rather than a marketing background. Interestingly, some new research from Forrester Research shows that this approach to web publishing is doomed to failure. David Travis explains. Publishing on the web is often characterised as a leap into the unknown. People involved in traditional media, such as newspapers, magazines and television, are sometimes considered unsuitable to design websites. The assumption behind all this is that the technical aspects of web publishing make it entirely unique. That's why, in many companies large and small, the person in charge of the intranet hails from a technical, rather than a marketing background. Home Usability Communications Customers ... About Us Content Usability for the web - Engage, Interact, Inform On June 13, The Women in Publishing Society will present two usability experts to speak on creating effective user-centric content for client websites as well as for your own web presence. Daniel Szuc and Peter Emmett will discuss what usability is, how to create profiles of your users, how to organise information, issues on readability in print vs. web, and ways to test the usability of your site. Daniel Szuc is the principal usability consultant at Apogee Communications Ltd. and has five years practical experience in applying usability techniques within a variety of organisations including PCCW, Cathay Pacific, New World Mobility, Telstra Australia and IBM GSA. Daniel's main focus at Telstra included improving usability in Customer Support and web-based systems, project consulting and work on the first Telstra usability standards to promote a common look and feel for interface design across the organisation. Peter Emmett arrived in Hong Kong sixteen years ago, and since then has been putting people at the centre of his work, from working with drug addicts to analysing electronic interfaces with Cathay Pacific Airways. For the last two years Peter has worked extensively with Cathay's Internet and Intranet sites, as well as other electronic interfaces. His work has focussed on introducing usability as a quality in every product Cathay offers to its customers or staff.

    Web Publishing
The invention of the World Wide Web has allowed an extraordinary amount of information to be within the reach of anyone with a PC and a modem. Persons with visual and other disabilities are able to use the Web; however important information may be lost to them when web developers fail to incorporate some simple web publishing techniques. Designers may overlook these issues because they are unaware of changes that can be made to improve the accessibility of their site. For additional information about creating accessible web pages and the related issues, please checkout the Web Development Tools section on Web Accessibility It is the responsibility of web publishers to familiarize themselves with web accessibility issues and learn the techniques that will make their pages accessible to users with disabilities. This document will explain the ways users with disabilitiess get information off of the Web. It will also explain how you can make your website accessible for those users.
    Screen Readers and Speech Synthesizers
In order for visually impaired users to get information from a website, they must rely on a screen reader and speech synthesizer. Instead of the users reading the screen, the screen is read to them. The screen reader scans the page only picking up text while the speech synthesizer creates a voice that is heard through the computer's speakers.
