http://www.unimelb.edu.au/index.html The page was authorised in early 2001 by the Director of Communications, John Nieuwenhuizen, and forwarded to Information Technology Services for uploading. Because the Web Centre had no access to the relevant web publishing system, ITS was asked to update the two HTML templates and the Web Publishing Policies and Guidelines to reflect the changes. top of page
Goal of the project
Since October 2001 the Web Centre has received comments and suggestions about the home page from various sources and via several communication channels. Based on this feedback, and the Web Centre's research into current usability and web publishing standards, we are reviewing the design and content of the home page. A redesigned home page should result in:
  • improved usability: user-focused information architecture, clearer navigation, fresh look and feel improved technical performance: accessibility, download speed, compatibility with various browsers and platforms, compliance with W3C standards

    Smarter Content Publishing
Building a semantic website to increase the efficiency and usability of publishing systems
    By Victor Lombardi
Do you remember the days before WYSIWYG word processors when you had to markup the text, much like we markup web documents using HTML? I don't. I started word processing using WYSIWYG applications on the Macintosh and only heard about markup in 1993 when I first saw a website. After all those years of refining the word processor to become a more efficient tool, I had to wonder why we reverted to manually creating markup for the web. One reason is that the web is not print . The need to create hypertext within pages requires more control over documents. Another is that web pages can also be applications, so access to the "guts" of the page is needed to insert programming code. And ideally, we would like to separate presentation from content, enabling us to format the content in different ways for different purposes. How can we achieve all this with the efficiency and usability we've come to expect of other publishing tools?
    Content Management Systems
While WYSIWYG web page editors are now available, more of our needs can be met using an entire content management system (CMS). CMS offers us:

Creating sites that truly meet the needs and expectations of the wide range of online users is quite another story. In Designing Web Usability: The Practice of Simplicity, renowned Web usability guru Jakob Nielsen shares his insightful thoughts on the subject. Packed with annotated examples of actual Web sites, this book sets out many of the design precepts all Web developers should follow. This guide segments discussions of Web usability into page, content, site, and intranet design. This breakdown skillfully isolates for the reader many subtly different challenges that are often mixed together in other discussions. For example, Nielsen addresses the requirements of viewing pages on varying monitor sizes separately from writing concise text for "scanability." Along the way, the author pulls no punches with his opinions, using phrases like "frames: just say no" to immediately make his feelings known. Fortunately, his advise is some of the best you'll find.

A closer look at the various types of academic web publishing
While it is probably correct that academic web publishing is an underdeveloped area in general, that is not to say that it is completely absent. I view academic web publishing as consisting of at least three types, each of which is developed to a different degree.
    Course websites
A substantially developed type of academic web publishing comprises the construction of course websites, through the use of course management systems. These are special-purpose applications focused mainly on activities that are common among undergraduate courses. Owners of websites constructed with course management systems are typically able to include various functionality, including uploaded resources, course schedules, assignments, threaded discussions, interactive tests and quizzes, chat rooms and whiteboards. Because of the need to protect intellectual property, entry to these websites usually requires authentication and authorization. Although in most cases the owners of websites created with these systems have the ability to include or exclude specific features, they are generally not at liberty to make gross changes in the organization or appearance of their site. A beneficial result of this enforced structure is that a predictable interface is presented to students who use the system for different courses within the same institution.

Usability - Not a Bad Word
So, as Internet users get more sophisticated, how do you achieve a higher level of usability? First of all, put your pride aside and test drive your site. Ask unbiased users for their opinions. If usability issues come up, it's time to redevelop. Ask professional designers how to improve your site and talk to their clients on results they achieved. With so many businesses online, to overlook usability is to take too great a risk, because a web site that does not enhance your business, only hurts it.

by Bonny L. Georgia What?! You don't have a Web page yet? Setting up even the most basic Web site for your company lets you reach millions of potential customers, get immediate feedback, and expand your business. And the newest Web publishing packages make it easier and cheaper than ever before. Even if you don't know a thing about HTML or graphic design, you can build a professional-looking site in a matter of hours. Microsoft FrontPage 97, on the other hand, is a suite of Web publishing tools for novice and intermediate users. FrontPage treats your site as one cohesive project called a Web, rather than separate, stand-alone pages. Our third package, NetObjects Fusion, is a more sophisticated package for those who want to create moderate-size sites. But you pay for the advanced features: Fusion costs $495 compared with the $99 Home Page and $149 FrontPage. Like FrontPage, Fusion treats all your pages as part of a single site and includes tools for site management. We asked our testers, who had no HTMLexperience, to determine which of the packages was easiest to use. First, our testers created a simple home page with some basic formatting and links. Next, they built a more complex page with multiple links (including one for e-mail) and advanced formatting like background images and borders. Finally, they tackled advanced site-management tasks. For each scenario they evaluated four factors: formatting, importing text and graphics, creating links, and updating links. For details on our usability testing, see "FrontPage Wins."

    Abstract
LOCKSS (Lots Of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) is a tool designed for libraries to use to ensure their community's continued access to web-published scientific journals. LOCKSS allows libraries to take custody of the material to which they subscribe, in the same way they do for paper, and to preserve it. By preserving it they ensure that, for their community, links and searches continue to resolve to the published material even if it is no longer available from the publisher. Think of it as the digital equivalent of stacks where an authoritative copy of material is always available rather than the digital equivalent of an archive. LOCKSS allows libraries to run web caches for specific journals. These caches collect content as it is published and are never flushed. They cooperate in a peer-to-peer network to detect and repair damaged or missing pages. The caches run on generic PC hardware using open-source software and require almost no skilled administration, making the cost of preserving a journal manageable. LOCKSS is currently being tested at 40+ libraries worldwide with the support of 30+ publishers.
