A WebQuest is an inquiry-oriented activity in which most or all of the information used by the students is drawn from the Internet. WebQuests are designed to use the students' time well, to focus on using information rather than looking for it, and to support students' thinking at the levels of analysis, synthesis and evaluation. Webquests help ensure that students stay on task while online. http://www.banks.k12.ga.us/scavengerhunt.htm
Developing a scavenger hunt is one method a teacher can use to teach academic concepts and teach navigation skills to students. Scavenger hunts can be one of two primary types. The teacher develops a series of questions or request a series of items for the student to collect and the student uses a search engine to locate the information. The teacher develops a series of questions and gives the student a hypertext link to the URL that will answer the question. In either case, developing a scavenger hunt is really no different from developing a general knowledge quiz for students. A teacher may take the following steps: Identify an idea/concept that he/she would like to reinforce or introduce. Search for web sites that reinforce/introduce the concept. Develop questions that may be answered at the site. Save it to a web site or give students a paper handout. Why use Scavenger Hunts to teach? http://www.spa3.k12.sc.us/WhyScavHunts.html Let's try this one: http://www.henry.k12.ga.us/pges/projects/around4.htm about Christmas and see if we like it! INTRODUCTION TO THE COLUMN by María Jose Luzon Marco Universidad de Zaragoza, Centro Politecnico Superior Zaragoza, Spain mjluzon@posta.unizar.es The purpose of this new column is to describe some pedagogical applications of the Internet to teach ESP at university level. In order to help ESP practitioners integrate the Internet into their classes and find the most appropriate activity for their purposes, this column will describe some Internet activities which are already being used by ESP teachers or which could be used in the ESP classroom. The column will, therefore, analyse learning environments available on the Internet that are appropriate for ESP. The main objective of ESP courses is to help students learn the language and communicative skills that they will need in the future target situation (e.g. industry or business settings). This can be achieved with a content-based curriculum, where students learn the language by focusing on the subject matter with the help of authentic materials. The Internet can be used to provide authentic content-based materials and activities which fit the students' needs. As Kimball (1998) points out, "Internet-generated materials can be flexibly arrayed to engage students with topics and cognitive tasks relevant to students' professional futures".

    Creating Student Generated Web Sites
Slide 13 of 37 Tammy: When teaching students and staff how to access information, they need to know how to use a variety of resources. Younger students they should use databases that have already sifted appropriate sites for their age. When these databases sift information they evaluate whether or not the information is appropriate for the younger student. For older students, they need to be taught the different kinds of search engines and search strategies. Visit this web page for more information on search engines: http://www.siec.k12.in.us/~west/edu/wwwdo/step2.htm For staff, they need to know what educational databases are already on line for them to use as well as search strategies. Visit this web page for a list of educational databases: http://www.siec.k12.in.us/~west/edu/wwwdo/step3.htm Teachers need to teach students how to evaluate whether or not the information is accurate. In the bibliography that is in the handout, there is a reference to an article written by Alan November called, " Teaching Zack to Think ." This is a junior high boy that found information about the Holocaust and in this article, it disputed the fact that this event took place in history. It is important that students are taught to question the validity of what they have read on the Internet.

Learning Activities! http://www.lclark.edu/~krauss/ORTESOL2000web/home.html Presentation Outline How can you take some of the terrific resources from the Web and integrate them into your curriculum? One way is to create Web-based activities, each designed with a specific student group and teaching goal in mind, using one of several online "click 'n build" tools. There is no need to learn HTML, and servers are provided to store the Web pages you create. One of these "click 'n build" tools, Filamentality, guides you through the design of a learning activity, asking you to fill in blanks. Filamentality helps you pick a topic (if necessary), collect appropriate Web sites, choose from among five activity formats (depending on your teaching goal), and then produces for you a Web page on the Internet. Today, we'll explore five types of Web-based learning activities and take a Filamentality Tour to see one way these online materials can be created. Multiple Choice Quiz: Choose the best answer.

Objectives 1.Identify characteristics of a curriculum page.
2.Identify characteristics of a scavenger hunt.
3.Describe the components of a WebQuest.
4.Create a curriculum page or scavenger hunt.
This is Important Because. . . Using classroom activities and projects that center around the Internet can be interesting, challenging, and entertaining for learners. Scavenger hunts, curriculum pages, and WebQuests are three of the most popular types of Internet activities being created by teachers. While separating them into three categories for the purposes of this lesson, as you explore on your own, you'll see that the lines between categories are not always clear. It's not as important to know the "correct" name for each as it is to see how many different ways the Internet can be used as a curricular resource. Think of these as a continuum beginning with a set of links for students to use as resources in answering a set of questions all the way up to a multi-lesson unit that utilizes Internet resources to solve in-depth real-life problem scenarios. Just as with any other web pages, these can be created in a number of ways. . . with HTML coding, exporting bookmarks, off-line web editors such as Dreamweaver, FrontPage, PageMil and online web page generators.

    1. Individual Research
This is the most common way of using the internet in most secondary schools. Students are asked to find information on a subject they are researching and spend hours trying to find the right web page. Here are some hints to make this work better.
  • Do not allow students to choose a topic on which there is no information available. Browse a directory of internet web sites and choose research subjects from the sites listed. Younger students may wish to use something like Yahooligans, the Gander Academy or Kanuski: Elementary Students Teach internet research skills to the students. These include:
  • How do find information How to evaluate the information for relevance How to evaluate the information for reliability. Compare these two web sites:
