Scavenger Hunts can be good starting points to help students, especially elementary students, practice information seeking skills. But a Scavenger Hunt can have a focus and go beyond collecting "nuggets" of information. You can use it to "stake out" the topic, before engaging in its study. If you have a few technically more sophisticated students, have THEM create of a Hunt around a theme. They will have a chance to work on Web research skills, language arts and more. Then, use the Hunt with the rest of your class. It will give you a chance to learn and teach skills with a small group before launching in whole class internet activities.
Types of Scavenger Hunts "Twenty Questions" The hunt can take the form of questions, each one associated with a Web Site URL. The young researcher will need to lean how to skim over a document, how to identify key words and links, and how to read in context in order to find the answers. For example:

General Information
Our workshops seek to blend elements of "how-to," "what-to," and "why-to" to provide educators a more complete perspective of how to thoughtfully and successfully integrate technology into their curriculum. We also believe people learn best by doing AND reflecting, both of which are integral to our workshops. Therefore, our workshops include hands-on activities, demonstrations, and discussions. Although all workshops are designed for a range of skill levels, the workshops can be modified to meet the particular needs and interests of your school or district.
This workshop is designed to acquaint teachers with two methods for focusing students' use of the World Wide Web. Participants will explore existing Treasure Hunts and WebQuests and discuss their strengths and weaknesses. They will also design either an original Treasure Hunt or WebQuest that compliments or enhances an existing curriculum topic. The workshop will also include short presentations or activities on: searching the WWW; bookmarking quality sites; writing higher-order questions; and designing cooperative tasks.

  • Introduction
Effective searching of the Internet is an important skill for students to learn. Even students who have surfed the Web at home may not be skilled in using search engines or directories. Scavenger hunts, or treasure hunts as they are sometimes called, are one of the most popular tools for teaching students how to search the Internet. Internet scavenger hunts also provide a way for students to practice problem solving and improve their reading and comprehension skills.
Click here to return to Menu
    Aim
The Super Sleuths module is designed to teach students how to collect information on a particular instruction topic, to teach students to use search engines properly, and to introduce students to the vast array of resources that are available on the Internet. Using scavenger hunts students will learn how to access and use the resources and information available.
Click here to return to Menu
    Rationale
Online scavenger hunts are easy to create and searches are both fun and informative for students. Students enjoy them. Lessons are tailored made and can be geared to virtually any curriculum area, simultaneously providing students with technological and subject matter knowledge. Scavenger hunts can be used as a whole class activity or as a means of providing individual students with review or challenging activities. Scavenger hunts can be as simple or involved as circumstances dictate. Younger students may be provided with only a few questions, along with the links or URLs necessary for finding the answers, while older students may be given only a broad topic and asked to find their own sources for obtaining necessary information.
