They contribute to substantial levels of crop loss in smallholder systems, particularly in the tropics and sub-tropics, where a combination of resource constraints at household level, difficult-to-control species, and often a poor understanding of crop/weed interactions complicate the development of sustainable control systems. In many farming systems of the developing world weed control is the most labour demanding pre-harvest operation, for example accounting for up to 60% of labour used for maize production in sub-Saharan Africa. Very often women and children shoulder much of this burden. Removing wild rice (

WEED SCIENCE
Weed Science is the study of weeds and their control. Emphasis is placed on understanding weed biology and ecology, integration of weed control techniques into a system approach, and maintaining and/or improving the environment through sound weed management principles. Housed in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees are offered in Weed Science. Weed Science jointly participates in the Agricultural Pest Management degree program with Entomology and Plant Pathology.

    Weed Science
    Overview
Weed science is a very dynamic field of research integrating cultural, mechanical, chemical, and biological management techniques to obtain economically and environmentally sustainable weed management systems. Emphasis is on solving weed management problems in Illinois field crops through basic and applied research.
    Opportunities for Study
Study in weed science leads to M.S. or Ph.D. degrees. Students take courses in weed science that discuss herbicide selectivity/mode of action and weed ecology/biology, as well as courses in crop sciences, plant physiology, biochemistry, plant anatomy, statistics, and contemporary laboratory techniques. In consultation with thesis advisors, students select their thesis research topics. There is a strong emphasis on team approaches; consequently, numerous opportunities exist to develop integrated research topics that combine field and laboratory studies. Cooperative programs often lead to opportunity for association with students and faculty in soils, plant physiology, biotechnology, plant breeding, plant pathology, and entomology.

    Career Opportunities

Usually, more employment opportunities are available in CWS than there are qualified graduates. Since producers require annual inputs such as seed, fertilizers and herbicides, they seek assistance in sales or service areas such as crop consulting, chemical application and soil testing each year. Therefore, opportunities for CWS graduates usually have been more stable than for employment areas where inputs can be deferred when income is low.
Many employers hire undergraduate students as interns for the summer months, and some hire for spring-summer semester or summer-fall semester periods. The department also hires summer interns with an expressed interest in graduate school. The salary for interns often exceeds the income for alternative summer jobs. An internship provides excellent work experience and often results in a graduating senior being hired earlier and with a higher salary than students without comparable experience.

    West Central Weed Science
Management of weeds has long been a vital practice to ensure the profitability of farming operations. Farmers have long recognized the importance of weed control. From the early days of agriculture on the Great Plains where a strong back, calloused hands, and a hoe were the equipment of choice; to modern times where spray equipment can see and individually spray weeds. Weed management will remain important in the future as agriculture continues to feed a growing world.
The Weed Science Department at the West Central Research and Extension Center conducts research in many areas that looks towards maintaining profitability of farming operations while also maintaining the environment. Research with spraying devices that can 'see' weeds and spray them individually promises to cut the amount of herbicide used by farmers in fallow. This will cut costs in spraying operations and also decrease the amount of herbicide introduced into the environment.
Pioneering research in ecofarming and ecofallow has led to increased profitability, soil conservation, and protection from extremes of weather. Ecofarming utilizes crop residues to aid in weed control, protect the soil from wind and water erosion and to conserve soil moisture for growing crops. Since the introduction of ecofarming practices, producers in Nebraska farming over a million acres of farmland have utilized these conservation techniques. Faculty at the West Central Research and Extension Center are leaders in the Ecofarming field.
