Definition of Terms Used in Weed Science
Herbicide Handbook of the Weed Science Society of America Acid Equivalent (AE): The theoretical yield of parent acid from the active ingredient content of a formulation. Active Ingredient (ai): The chemical(s) in a formulated product that is (are) principally responsible for the herbicide effects and that is (are) shown as active ingredient(s) on herbicide labels. Adjuvant: Any substance in a herbicide formulation which enhances the effectiveness of the herbicide. Antagonism: Opposing action of different chemicals such that the action of one is impaired or the total effect is less than that of one component used separately. At Emergence: Treatment applied during the visible emerging phase of the specified crop or weed. Basal Treatment: Applied to encircle the stem of a plant above and at the ground such that foliage contact is minimal. A term used mostly to describe treatment of woody plants. Band Treatment: Applied to a continuous restricted area such as on or along a crop row rather than over the entire field area. Bed: (1) A ridge of soil formed for planting crops above furrows on each side, (2) An area in which seedlings or transplants are grown for planting in the field later.

http://www.lsuagcenter.com/weedscience/
Home Faculty Graduate Students Related Publications ... News and Events Agriculture in Louisiana is quite diverse. Agronomic crops to include sugarcane, rice, cotton, soybeans, corn, grain sorghum, and wheat occupy major acreage within the state. In addition, cattle production, residential and recreational turf, and horticulture are prominent enterprises. Producers deal with a variety of pests, but weeds are nearly always problematic due to our semi-tropical climate with abundant rainfall and favorable growing conditions that allow them to proliferate. Weeds are plants growing out of place or growing where they are not wanted. Most often weeds represent, for example, a johnsongrass plant in a cotton field. However, volunteer corn in soybeans could also be considered a weed since corn is growing where it is not wanted. Weeds scientists with the LSU Ag Center are dedicated to developing better management techniques for weeds that combine chemical, cultural, and mechanical control methods to minimize yield reduction as well as harvest efficiency problems associated with weed competition. This collaborative team approach involves both research and extension activities with the to develop cost effective and environmentally sound management strategies to help sustain agricultural production within the state.

The Sixth China Weed Science Society Conference Since the Fifth china weed science society conference held in Kunming in 1994, weed science research and integrated weed management (IWM) in China have been developing swiftly. To meet the new challenge in the next Millennium, to exchange weed scientist's ideas, to further develop and forward Chinese weed science research and IWM in sustainable agriculture in the early 21 century, the sixth china weed science society conference will be held in Nanning, Guangxi Province in March 1999. The conference will include Symposium, Poster and Discussion Sessions. The programme will cover a wide range of interests of weed scientists, such as weed biology, weed ecology, taxonomy, weed utilization, weed resistance, new techniques in IWM, new herbicides, formulations, application technology, problems caused by long persistent herbicides and tackling strategies, biological weed control, herbicide physiology. The Organizing Committee invites offers of papers from all over the world for the conference. Accepted papers will be presented in either platform or poster sessions and published in a dedicated proceeding. Those interested in contributing a paper should submit his/her paper with a 200-word abstract as soon as possible and in any case before 15 January 1999. Offered papers should be sent directly to Dr. Hanwen Ni by either e-mail or post at the address below:

The purpose of the North Central Collegiate Weed Science Contest is to provide an educational experience from which students in North Central universities can broaden their applied skills in Weed Science. The contest provides an opportunity for Weed Science students to meet and talk with each other, be exposed to researchers from other universities and industry, and apply what they have learned using a contest to measure their capabilities. The contest consists of competition in four areas:
  • Weed and weed seed identification - Contestants are required to identify 25 samples of plants or weed seeds by common and scientific name. The species are selected from a list of 65 species that students are given earlier in the year. Unknown herbicide identification - 20 crop and weed species are treated with different herbicides. The contestants must determine from control, injury, and species present what herbicides were used. Herbicides and species used are taken from a list provided to the students earlier in the year.

The USDA, Agricultural Research Service, Foreign Disease-Weed Science Research Unit has two distinct missions united by a common relationship to plant pathology and the unit's unique P-3 plant pathogen laboratory and greenhouse containment facilities. The mission of the foreign disease program is to develop techniques for the rapid detection and identification of new and emerging crop pathogens. Research is conducted to provide fundamental information on emerging pathogens for risk assessment and the development of practical phytosanitary regulations for the import and export of agricultural commodities and germplasm. The mission of the weed biological control program is to collect foreign pathogens overseas from weeds in their native habitat, and to evaluate, characterize and release the pathogens in the U.S. for biological control of introduced weeds, leading to improved, sustainable weed control practices in agricultural systems with reduced dependence on chemical herbicides. "Glyphosate resistance dominates weed science meetings" Mike Holmberg
Farm Chemicals Editor
Successful Farming
December 6, 2002 Based on the number of papers dealing with glyphosate-resistant weeds at this week's North Central Weed Science Society meeting in St. Louis, you could draw one of two conclusions. Either the weed scientists have all the major weed control issues sorted out already, or else glyphosate-resistant weeds are a genuine threat. Depending on who you talk with, you could make an argument either way. A symposium on glyphosate-resistant weeds attracted an overflow crowd on Thursday morning to hear updates on glyphosate-resistant marestail in the DelMarVa area, west Tennessee, Kentucky, southern Indiana and southern Ohio. Marestail (horseweed) is a big concern because it is a prolific seed producer and the seeds are easily blown around by the wind. Although marestail is the first row-crop weed to develop glyphosate-resistance in the US, there are several other species being watched. Weed scientists in Iowa and Missouri have been testing waterhemp from a handful of fields that seems to have more tolerance to glyphosate. In addition, there have been more complaints about marginal control of velvetleaf, ivyleaf morningglory and lambsquarters control with glyphosate. The big question is whether it makes more sense to try to avoid resistance problems or simply to deal with them if they show up. Although both claim to be proactive, as you might expect, Monsanto and Syngenta are taking slightly different approaches to that question.
