Salé and Pelletier The story of pairs figure skaters Jamie Salé and David Pelletier is now officially a part of the sometimes strange and unusual history of the Olympic Games.
Here's a look back at some other medals that were won under less-than-normal circumstances.

But the medals were revoked and his name was removed from the results when it was discovered that he had received a small payment for playing minor league baseball in 1909 and 1910, therefore violating the amateur status regulations. The International Olympic Committee gave the medals back to his family in 1983.

KNOWING YOUR HISTORY
Part 1: Power Lifting As An Olympic Sport?!?!
By: J.V. Askem First off, my interest in iron game history is simply a hobby, and I just consider myself a student who is always learning new things. So I would be first to admit that I don't know all the facts about iron game history. However, in my 38 years as an iron game enthusiast, I've obtained a lot of information. Aside from the books I've obtained for reference, I've also been in contact with several iron game historians around the world who at times have provided me with some interesting and relevant facts. Thus I've written this series to help interested parties become more aware of their iron game heritage. In early days of the iron game, back in the late nineteenth century, in an effort to organize iron game events into a legitimate sport "it was all called weightlifting" . That includes events like shot putting, tug-of-war, as well as the exercises performed with dumbbells and barbells. Early on the throwing events found a home in track and field. So that left the barbell and dumbbell crowd to form their own group. Starting in the late nineteenth century, pioneers of

1996 ATLANTA The last Olympics Games of the twentieth century was held in Atlanta in 1996 and Trinidad and Tobago's athletic squad (13 athletes) were among those who witnessed another exceptional Opening Ceremony choreographed by one of Trinidad and Tobago top carnival designers, Peter Minshall. Ato Boldon was the main medal hope: a world championship bronze medal in 1995, and a 9.92 winning time at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon made him one of the 100m favorites. Neil De Silva and Robert Guy also returned from 1992 and were joined by Long Jumper Wendell Willimas, Javelin Thrower Kirt Thompson, Long Distance Runner Ronnie Holassie and female High Jumper, Natasha Alleyne-Gibson, Gene Samuel- Cyclist, Boxer - Kirt Sinnette, Table Tennis player Dexter St. Louis, Debra O'Connor - Badminton and Swimmers Siobhan Cropper and Cerian Gibbes. O'Connor Olympic quest lasted just one game, as she lost 3 - 11, -11 to Canada's Denyse Juilien in the opening round of the ladies Badminton singles. Sinnette seemed to be heading for victory against Ehtiopia's Yarod Wolde until a final round knocked down paved the way for the Ehtiopians' points 11 - 10 points triumph. St. Louis had a tough time in his First Round group encounters and failed to win a game.

* IWF / EWF / Nat. Federations Home Introduction in Weightlifting Weightlifting - Powerlifting - Bodybuilding It is important to make a clear distinction between the three related sports branches that often get mixed up: weightlifting, bodybuilding and powerlifting. All three competition sports are based on weight training but there are also fundamental differences. What counts in " body-building " is the athlete's appearance, or as de term explains itself: how well is the body builded. So there is only real use from weights in the training sessions, while on the competition itself only the result of this weight-training on the body is displayed. Weightlifting and powerlifting are much closer to each other; in both strength sports the aim is to lift as much as possible while the looks of the athlete's body are of no importance. In power-lifting there are three movements at which the "pure" strength from the participants is tested. With the first movement- the

About U.S. Weightlifting
By finishing just 31st overall in the World Championships last year, the United States earned just three automatic spots in the field, though two more were added in June. Mark Henry, hoping to become the first American to win superheavyweight gold since 1956, will make history of at least one kind: After becoming the heaviest lifter in Olympic history in 1992 (tipping the Toledos at 366 pounds), he is expected to become the first 400-pounder ever to grace the Olympic stage. Some of his other vital statistics are impressive, too: He is 6-3 with a 48-inch waist. His shoe size is a boat-like 16EEEE. His jacket size varies between 62 and 64, with a 22-inch shirt collar. All this, and he still can dunk a basketball. Two years ago, in fact, Henry finished third at the Foot Locker Slam Fest, beating out long jumper Mike Powell, among others. "He has this unbelievable combination of massive strength and quickness that is rarely seen," says Terry Todd, a UT physical education professor and former national weightlifting champion. Henry won't be going to Atlanta alone, of course. The delegation includes:

A rash of positive drug tests which led to three lifters, including Bulgarian gold medallist Izabella Dragneva, being stripped of medals has led to some calls for the sport to be dropped from the Olympic program. The furore overshadowed some great stories. Women were competing in the sport at the Olympics for the first time, proving popular, and Greek star Pyrros Dimas etched his name alongside the greats by winning gold at a third consecutive Games. The weightlifting world also bid farewell to another member of that club, legend Naim Suleymanoglu. The Turkish star was aiming for a record fourth consecutive gold, but failed to record a successful lift.

By

and
Rodney Corn National Academy of Sports Medicine Recently, a fitness professional posed a couple of fairly common questions that deserve a thorough answer. They asked:
  • "Do you think Olympic weight lifting should only be done by serious amateur and professional athletes?” “Are there safe alternatives to Olympic lifting that are as effective? "
  • The simple answers to the questions are, no and yes, respectively. However, these answers are only opinion and regardless of someone’s experience or professed level of knowledge, there is no real way to quantify these answers or opposing answers, for that matter. What can be done, though, is to present some information relevant to Olympic lifting and the human body and let you draw your own conclusion. To quickly clarify what is meant by the term Olympic weightlifting, this article will refer to the lifts known as the “Snatch” and the “Clean and Jerk” that are usually performed at a high-intended velocity of contraction (as fast as possible). Other derivations of these lifts such as the hang snatch and hang clean and/or the push jerk or push press may also be included. The remainder of this article will be divided into three parts dedicated to expanding on the answers given. We will start here in Part I with a brief history of Olympic weightlifting and then begin to address the first question, “

Wrestling ATHLETICS 100 metres The 100-metre dash is the show stopper of the Olympic Games, and one of the events in the original modern Games, in 1896. Eight runners qualify for the final, and they blast in a straight line down the track in lanes that are between 1.22 and 1.25 metres wide. Each runner is allowed only one false start, which is determined by pressure plates built into the runner's starting block. A runner has finished the race when his or her shoulders or torso cross the finish line. This has been a signature event for Canada over the years. Percy Williams of Vancouver won the 100 metres at the 1928 Games in Amsterdam, Harry Jerome won bronze in 1964, Ben Johnson won bronze in 1984 before winning gold and being humiliatingly disqualified for drugs in 1988. And Donovan Bailey won gold in Atlanta four years ago. Canadian women also fared well initially. Bobbie Rosenfeld won silver and Ethel Smith bronze in Amsterdam in 1928. Hilda Strike struck silver in 1932.
