It has several research specialisms of long standing but is developing new areas of interest. The Section maintains an active research community . It provides research supervision in many areas of Medieval, Early-Modern, Modern and Welsh history and is closely involved with a number of interdisciplinary research groups including the Centre for the Study of Medieval Society and Culture Cardiff Centre for the Crusades , and the Cardiff Centre for Modern German History . I'll toss a few book titles at you first and then maybe begin a historical synopsis. I can probably get you up to Owain Glyn Dwr (ca. 1400) but after that you'll probably need someone else's input. Good Books: John Davies, "A History of Wales" (New York: Penguin Books, 1993). Printed both in English and Welsh. This is a nice overview from the earliest times to the present, and is readily availible in bookstores in the US. RR Davies, "Conquest, Coexistance, and Change: Wales 1063-1415" University of Wales Press, 1986). Professor Davies is a very distinguished scholar at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. The work covers from the death of Grufudd ap Lywellan to Owain Glyn Dwr. Also, if you can get your hands on any of the poetry anthologies, do it! If you have never read Dafydd ap Gwilym, Gwalchmai, "Armes Prydain", or "Y Gododdin", you are missing out on a wonderful piece of your heritage and culture. I don't have any anthology titles handy, but I can easily get them for you (I believe the best one is Joseph Clancy's "Early Welsh Lyrics" but let me check on the title and author).

They generally worked for others until they had saved enough to buy a few acres for a little over $1 an acre. With a lifetime of hardwork, frugal living and determination they carved a farm out of the wilderness. Today that acre may sell in the neighborhood of $1800. Your ancestor possibly gave land on which to build a school or a church with an adjoining cemetery in which he now lies. No doubt he cooperated in establishing law and order, serving on an early jury, helping with the elections, filling such responsible jobs as director of the infirmary, member of the school board, judge or Justice of the Peace. More than likely he helped build roads where there were holes big enough to swallow a horse.

Antiquarian maps From the Western Mail, March 23 2000 OWAIN GLYNDWR IN WELSH HISTORY Owain Glyndwr is one of the key figures in Welsh heritage. He was of noble birth on both sides, being connected to all the Welsh ruling families. He had homes at Glyndyfrdwy, in the Dee Valley in north Wales and at Sycharth, near Bala , the latter being described by Iolo Goch, his family bard, as “this mansion of generosity”. He led a conventional life, studying law in London, and serving with Richard II in France and Scotland. When Richard was usurped by Henry IV, many refused to believe that he had died, probably from starvation. There was much unrest because of the harsh rule of England, and strained relations between Owain and his neighbour Lord Grey of Ruthin, a close friend of Henry. When in 1400 Lord Grey deliberately delayed summoning Glyndwr to serve in the army in Scotland until it was too late to make an explanation, the uprising began with an attack on

There had been no England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales until fairly recent history and in the 6th century B.C. there were just two islands known as Ierne (Ireland) and Albion (England, Scotland and Wales). The total population at that time was somewhere between 4 and 5 million, concentrated mainly in the south-east of modern day England. This population was made up of tribes, each with its own king, king's followers, surfs and slaves, these tribes constantly squabbling amongst themselves over lands and "captives", especially women. They still managed however to trade with each other. About 325 B.C. a Greek geographer described the islands as Pretanic, a genuine Celtic word used to describe a form of speech, later to become Brittonic or the language of Britton (Britain). In Latin the islands became known as Brittania. The Celts of Ireland spoke Goidelic and of Wales it became Brythonic, from which modern Welsh is descended, including some Latin and the P-Celtic of French. The formation of modern Welsh was completed by about 700. The Romans invaded about 50B.C. and progressed until about 10 B.C. when they had some influence on "Wales" in the north and south but not in the middle hill country. The Romans power lasted until about 200A.D. before they withdrew from Wales and started slowly leaving these islands over a period of many years.
