The New York Times gets an 'F' for geography
Michael Brown, The Electronic Intifada, 18 December 2002
Every six months or so a report comes out detailing the woeful state of geographical knowledge held by many Americans. Usually people chuckle and wonder how it is that so many Americans think California is on the East Coast. After all, every rightly educated American knows it's on the Left Coast.
But the consequences can be serious. This is particularly the case when it is The New York Times (NYT) butchering basic facts about where Israel begins and ends. Of course, as Israel has never defined exactly where those borders are, it is alarming when the NYT appears to be handing over vast swathes of new territory to Israel.
The most commonly misplaced territory in the region is Shebaa Farms, a small patch of land that Israel continues to occupy on the border between Lebanon and the occupied Golan Heights. The news media regularly imply it is Israeli. The one thing we know is that the area is either Syrian or Lebanese, but most certainly not Israeli. Israeli-occupied yes, but not Israeli.

West Bank Settlements Obstruct Peace:
Israel’s Empire State Building by
Marwan Bishara W hy is it so hard to make peace in the Middle East? The greatest barrier is the Israeli settlements—these are both the motivation and engine of the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories. Three decades of objections from the United States and Europe have achieved nothing. The rapid expansion of Israeli settlements—all illegal—has undermined Palestinian attempts at nation building. If they continue to spread, they will end the Israel that its founders envisioned. As Israel makes more incursions into the Palestinian cities, it has placed new restrictions on the movement of their people and goods, stifling the economy. Oslo has ended. And still Israeli settlements increase and expand, in violation of all international resolutions. The settlement drive and its ideology have become a cornerstone of modern Israeli national identity. The policy of settlements and the current violence they are breeding have transcended the country’s ethnic and religious divides to create a new Israelism based on a new Jewish nationalism. The setters and their allies are recreating Israel in their own image: as a theocracy in permanent conflict. Under the government of Ariel Sharon and with the explicit support of President George W. Bush, this process is becoming a destructive self-fulfilling prophecy.

Top of Page Israel is a small country in the middle east. The central plateau, called the West Bank, is the ancient Israel heartland containing Jerusalem. To the north are the Lebanese mountains. Israel has been in a political and sometimes military battle with its neighbors over its territory and very existence. The Gaza Strip on the Mediterranean coast was once part of Egypt. The West Band and East Jerusalem were part of Jordan. The Golan Heights is still in dispute with Syria. To the south of the West Bank is the Negev desert. The Negev desert represents about 60% of Israel's territory.

How the West (Bank) was Won
by FRANK FUGATE T he other day I was set for some relaxation time watching on TV the 1963 movie, "How the West Was Won," with a star-studded cast, including, Spencer Tracy and Henry Fonda and partially directed by John Ford. Later I watched a documentary on the History channel about the untold story of General Custer's last stand against the Indians now called Native Americans. The movie "How the West Was Won," is a grandiose Hollywood make-believe spin-job about the early pioneers, refugees from the Old World, spreading like a plague across new America and our Army chasing the Native Americans off their ancestral land to make room for these immigrants. The History channel program happened to be more balanced by at least showing some of the Native Americans points-of-view. As it turned out neither was very relaxing. I had a hard time concentrating on the TV. Why? My mind kept wondering to another West the West Bank. A similar struggle is taking place between the hoards of settlers pouring into Israel and the West Bank with their insatiable appetite for land, which requires displacement of native Palestinians. The Palestinians, similar to the Native Americans, are standing in the way of Sharon's vision of a greater Israel. As in the Middle East, we played tit-for-tat with the Native Americans until might became right. We had an Army equipped with modern weapons against savages outfitted with stone-point arrows and stone axes; today it is American supplied tanks against stone throwing teenagers. We destroyed Native American cities by burning their tepees and slaughtering their old people, women, and children; today American bulldozers are being used to flatten Palestinian homes and American supplied rockets to vaporize the old people, women and children. We slaughtered the Buffalo and other "game" which forced Native Americans into hopeless starvation; today Sharon's Army of vengeance enforces starvation curfews. We desecrated Native Americans' sacred hills in our lust for gold; today the Sharon's Army desecrates Palestinian churches and mosques.
