Images from "Poltical Geography of the Middle East," Bucknell Unversity January Semester, 1979. Abandoned refugee camp, near Jericho, Israel (West Bank). Memorial cemetary (Yad Vashem, near Hertzl's tomb), Jerusalem. The 1979 January term documented by these pages took place a few months following the meetings at Camp David that preceded the Camp David Accords, entered into by Menachim Begin and Anwar Sadat (under the guidance of Jimmy Carter, with support by Yasser Arafat). It was a time of unprecendented optimism for peace. As a student on that trip, it is challenging to consider the pain that has re-emerged this year, 2002. home A tribute to Dr. Richard Peterec, Bucknell's finest. Previous Note Abetting Professor Peterec on this January Semester were Bucknell professors Tom Travis (political science) and Walter Odronic (Japanese). As I recall, in Jerusalem, among many other turns, Tom presented a stimulating paper on how to demarcate Israeli and Palestinian factions for an enduring peace. Walter shared much insight on Eastern philosophy and ancient civilizations. Click on a picture for a more detailed view (larger image file, longer download). The Palestinians took over nothing, except the transient security of life in refugee camps throughout the region. In the wave of incursions into the West Bank that began on March 29, Israeli troops, tanks, helicopters and bulldozers moved in on the towns and refugee camps in or near Ramallah, Beit Jala, Qalqilya, Tulkarm, Bethlehem, Jenin, Salfit, Nablus, Hebron, Qabatiyah, Yatta and Dura.
Palestinians amid the rubble in Jenin The bloodiest and most significant battle took place in Jenin in the northern end of the West Bank. For days the Israelis designated Jenin a "closed military area," which meant no journalists and aid workers allowed. The Israelis considered Jenin the centre of Palestinian suicide-bomber attacks.

Hebronising the West Bank
By Graham Usher

Taysir Zahdeh has unusual home movies. He slides one into his VCR. It shows a Jewish settler woman carrying a tray of steaming food up Taysir's stairwell to Israeli soldiers who, for the last nine months, have commandeered his roof. "This is my house," she says cheerfully to camera. "All Hebron is for the Jews." A crowd of Jewish settlers swarm up the hill beside his home, smashing Palestinian car windows and overturning garbage containers. A few soldiers mingle among them, effectively trying to shove them back. One settler spots the camera and lobs a stone at Taysir's window. Taysir lives in "Hebron Two," together with 30,000 other Palestinians and around 235 Jewish settlers and all, in theory, under the command of the Israeli army. But some inhabitants clearly are more commanded than others. On a bluff above Taysir's house sits Tel Rumeida, officially an archaeological site preserving ancient Jewish ruins, actually a green-webbed army garrison ensconced to protect around 20 settlers who have squatted the site in three mobile homes.
