Opposite the city that developed around the East Bank temple complexes for the cult of Amen , the West Bank of the Nile at Thebes served as a vast cemetery for its citizenry and officialdom for thousands of years. For approximately five hundred years of that time, during Dynasties 17 to 20, it was also the burial place of Egypt's rulers. Several locations are known to have been set aside as royal necropoleis, the most famous of which is the Valley of the Kings. The Valley actually consists of two valleys that run northeast from the slopes of a prominent ridge on a high plateau extending into the Western Desert [ ]. This plateau is composed mainly of limestone strata, the Theban Formation, laid down about thirty-five to fifty-six million years ago. The limestone overlays layers of "Isna shale" and chert. These strata were forced upwards later in the Tertiary, and, during the Pleistocene, heavy rains cut a series of

Why did Jordan renounce all claims to the West Bank ( Judea and Samaria ) in 1988?
As a result of Israel's War of Independence in 1948 , Jordan occupied East Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria , land known since that time as the "West Bank". In April 1950, Jordan annexed eastern Jerusalem (dividing the city for the first time in its history) and the "West Bank" areas in historical Judea and Samaria that Trans-Jordan had occupied by military force in 1948 (Jordan changed its name to Trans-Jordan in April 1949). On April 24, 1950, the Jordan House of Deputies and House of Notables, in a joint session, adopted a Resolution making the West Bank and Jerusalem part of Jordan . This act had no basis in international law; it was only the de facto act of Trans-Jordan as a conquerer. The other Arab countries denied formal recognition of the Jordanian move and only two governments - Great Britain and Pakistan - formally recognized the Jordanian takeover. The rest of the world, including the United States, never did.

    The Geography and Geology
of the Valley of the Kings on the West Bank at Thebes
    by Jimmy Dunn Geography
Thebes was never a perfect position from which to rule Egypt. Perhaps that is why Memphis , even when it was not Egypt's capital, was nevertheless an important administrative center. Thebes really gained its importance as a religious center, along with the fact that it was an ideal location for an ancient Egyptian necropolis. The ancient Egyptians considered the west side of the Nile, was where the sun entered the netherworld, and was thus associated with the afterlife. The flat plain on the West Bank of the Nile River at Thebes stretched from the river to a mountain chain with numerous secluded valleys that threaded through tall, soft stone cliffs. What really made this site perfect was the aspect of mortuary temple and tomb combinations. Ever since the pyramid age, rulers of Egypt built a mortuary temple dedicated to their cult, together with their actual tomb. The West Bank at Thebes provided the flat plain they needed for the temple, while their tombs could be hewn from the limestone of the valleys beyond.

An Overview of the West Bank at Luxor (Ancient Thebes)
    by Mark Andrews
The west bank at Luxor is one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. It is much more than what we refer to as the Valley of the Kings , though many have called the whole of the area by that name. In fact, many good books on the west bank at Luxor (ancient Thebes ) are titled, "Valley of the Kings", even though they cover the entire area. It can be a bit confusing for the novice, particularly considering the actual conceptual scope of the religious concept. If one looks at just the Valley of the Kings, one only sees tombs, but the tombs were an integral part of larger mortuary complexes. Indeed, the whole west bank is honeycombed with tombs, not just of the ancient Egyptian Kings, but of their families and the noblemen who served them. Layout of the West Bank
As the Valley was in Egypt's Dynastic Period
The west bank necropolis can be divided into a number of zones and sub-zones, of which the Valley of the Kings is only one zone. The northern sector of the west bank closest to the Nile River is often referred to as the

It is currently occupied by Israel and mostly inhabited by Palestinians and Israeli settlers Formerly part of the British Mandate of Palestine , it was controlled by Jordan from 1949 to 1967 and by Israel from 1967 to the present.
