The bloodiest war in American history began on April 12, 1861, when Confederate troops attacked Fort Sumter, in South Carolina, and ended with the Confederacy’s surrender at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia, on April 9, 1865. The war changed the United States in dramatic ways. No major new national symbols were adopted during the Civil War—although “ In God We Trust ” became an unofficial motto. After all, Americans were too busy dying to worry much about adopting new symbols. Yet the war between the states was perhaps the single greatest influence on America’s national symbols and the continuing evolution—and manipulation—of patriotism.
The Civil War era had two major effects on the nation’s symbols:
1) A new focus on RELIGION 2) An increase in the IMPORTANCE that was placed on national symbols

FORK UNION, Va. Military schools, with their square notions of crisp uniforms and strict discipline, were once as trendy as a buzz cut. In 1950, there were 160 of the institutions nationwide. Today, there are just 40, but their concept and their enrollment is making a comeback. Two new military schools are in the works, existing institutions report rising piles of applications and even the liberal mayor of Oakland, Calif., Jerry Brown, is supporting military-style education as a remedy for troubled schools in his city. "The discipline issue, the organizational skills that we teach, the core values of spirituality, honesty and integrity. ... Parents are not finding those kind of things in public schools," said John Jackson, a retired Air Force lieutenant general who serves as president of Fork Union Military Academy in central Virginia. Applications there are up 15 percent in the last year.

Hare Krishna: news articles 1999
ISKCON in the News Articles from the Cult Observer 1984-1999
Vol. 16, No. 7 Hare Krishnas Confront Child Abuse (pp. 1,3) Current and former devotees claim that for at least a decade leaders of the group knowingly permitted suspected sex offenders to work among 2,000 children in its boarding schools. After years of silence, former students are lashing out at the movement, some of them still living on the fringes of the group, chanting at the group's temples sometimes beside the very people they accuse of abuse. And now a law firm that has won millions from the Catholic church is taking their case. When the charges surfaced last fall, leaders pledged to atone for what they openly acknowledged to have been sexual, physical, and emotional abuse at the schools. And in May, leaders pledged $250,000 a year to investigate past child abuse and aid survivors. In addition, the group's Office of Child Protection compiled the names of 200 people who allegedly inflicted abuse in the 1970s and '80s (Two ISKCON child care workers were convicted of sexual abuse in the 1980s.)

Here is a review of the book My Heart is On the Ground , a fictionalized story targeted for girls ages 9-12 of a twelve-year old girl's experience at Carlisle Indian School. The authors of the review criticize the book for its appropriation of Indian lives and literature, lack of historical accuracy, lack of cultural authenticity, and use of stereotypes, while presenting facts about the true story of Indian boarding school life and the girl on whom the book is based.
