Crafts The Civil War The War Between the States was particularly tragic in West Virginia, where brothers sometimes fought on opposite sides in the same battle. Having gained statehood in 1863 by proclamation of President Abraham Lincoln, the new state became divided within itself because of conflicting loyalties. The land war actually began here, in Mountaineer Country at Philippi. The first Union casualty is buried nearby in Grafton National Cemetery, along with 1,215 others, half of them unknown. There are many places where visitors can stand on ground hallowed during the Civil War, and learn through exhibits, living history presentations and reenactments. African-American Heritage Ride the Rails In these rugged mountains, railroads quickly became a lifeline for transporting people, timber and coal. Remnants of those Iron Horses and the tracks they followed remain today. In the Potomac Highlands, Cass Scenic Railroad State Park and the historic town of Cass recall a massive early 1900s timber operation. Restored Shay and Heisler-type steam locomotives pull passenger cars to the summit of Bald Knob, one of the highest places in the state.

West Virginia's first permanent white settlement was in 1726 in Berkeley County, Virginia. In 1775, Virginia established the West Augusta District which encompassed all of current-day West Virginia plus part of western Pennsylvania, but the border was disputed by Pennsylvania. That issue was settled in 1779 when Virginia transferred much of the northern part of West Augusta District to Pennsylvania. Virginia became a state in 1788 but seceded during the Civil War. In the conflict within the state over secession, fifty western counties broke off and formed the state of West Virginia, which was loyal to the union and admitted as a state in 1863. In the next decade, industrial expansion drew many immigrants both from Europe and the South. Mining is still a major industry.

50. Introduction
genealogy site for the name Derenberger, Ohio and west virginia.

Derenberger Genealogy
My purpose:
The reason I am putting my family tree on the internet, is to display my own collection of Derenberger fact and fiction, so that it may be compared with information that other researchers may have. I hope every researcher of the Derenberger name and anyone else with information, who reads this will contact me so that we may put it all together and clear up all the mysteries.
What's in a name?
One question that bothered me at first was, "Why are there so many different spellings of the Derenberger name on the various documents I am finding?". I eventually realized that Germans just arriving from the old country probably could not read or write english and when their names are found on documents, those names are spelled phonetically, the way the person writing them down thought they should be spelled. DERENBERGER, DERENBURGER, DURRENBURGER, DERNBERGER, DURNBERGER, etc., all sound pretty much the same when spoken and could have been spelled any of the above ways. As future generations learned to read and write, they had to choose one spelling or another.

ARONHALT FAMILY...
. . . WHERE DO I FIT IN? Genealogy Research Notes of Charlie O'Haver, a great-great-great grandson of Adam Aronhalt the earliest family member recorded in this ongoing compilation I began researching the ARONHALT family history a number of years ago branching off from a study of my own surname of O'Haver. My great-grandfather John William O'Haver and great-grandmother Lydia V. Aronhalt married in 1855 in Hardy County, Virginia (what is now Grant County, West Virginia). They had several children before the marriage ended in divorce about 1880. Lydia came from a large family. Her father John Aronhalt married Mary "Polly" Kitzmiller in 1827 in Hardy County, Virginia. They were the parents of ten children. But my research ran into a snag with the 1850 Hardy County Census which shows John and the ten children in the household, but Polly's name isn't included. The 1860 Census lists John with less children in the household, but still no wife. I have not found any information to show that Polly died prior to 1850, or if she and John divorced. However, John remarried after 1860 to Isabell S. Lee, and the couple had several children. Although there are numerous surnames of this family line, I have used the ARONHALT spelling throughout. Among other spellings I've come across several of which were handwritten into records by obvious error include: Aaronhalt, Aronholt, Aronhault, Arnholt, Arnhart, Erinholt, Erinhold, Ernhart and Earnheart.
