    History
In 1968, the Civic Center expanded, with the addition of an ice arena and 2,400 seats to the arena. The expansion cost $1.8 million. Ten years later, construction began on a $19 million expansion, to create a new coliseum and a two-story lobby, wrapped around the original arena and theater. The existing Civic Center was turned into a convention center featuring meeting rooms, exhibit halls and major banquet facilities. The project was financed by a federal grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development and a $10 million bond issue approved by Charleston voters. The new coliseum opened in 1980. It seats up to 13,500 people for in-the-round events, 12,500 for basketball games, and more than 10,000 for stage shows and circuses. The renovated grand hall boasts 36,000 square feet of floor space, which can be halved by 50-ton moveable wall that descends from the ceiling. Two parking garages were added in 1983. They accommodate up to 1,300 cars.

The Charleston Civic Center and Coliseum is an immense structure, not far from where the Elk River flows into the Great Kanawha. (The Kanawha, in turn, flows west to the Ohio.) Charleston is also at the crossroads of Interstates 64, 77, and 79.

The Capital Cities of Virginia
Richmond has not always been the capital of Virginia. Each shift of the capital occurred for a reason. Some of the buildings that housed the legislature, and places where they were located, are described by the official About Our Capitol site - but somehow the move of the capital to Wheeling and Alexandria has been omitted from the official site. NOTE: The "state capitol" is the building that houses the Virginia General Assembly. The "capital" is the city in which the General Assembly meets. At the Federal Level, Washington DC is the capital city and the US Congress meets in the Capitol building. Charlottesville, Staunton, and Lynchburg could claim to have been the capital of Virginia, since the General Assembly met there briefly.
Werowocomoco
Virginia's first known capital was Werowocomoco, the "seat" of the Native American chief we know today as Powhatan. It was located on modern Purtan Bay, on the north bank of the York River in Gloucester County, 10 miles upstream from Yorktown. According to John Smith , Pocahontas came to his rescue there. Now the government of the Pamunkey tribe, including the

Rivers and Watersheds
Virginia has been shaped by its rivers. Storms have carved away at the land since time immemorial, and the rivers have carried mountains to the oceans before the current mountains or oceans even existed. Today we view the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Front as the primary topographic features directing water towards the east or west. However, Virginia's rivers have been carrying sediments downstream, reshaping the surface of the state, for eons. The New River was flowing even before the continents smashed into each other 200 million years ago, or "thundering lizards" left their dinosaur tracks in the sandstones now being unearthed at Solite Quarry.
Most Virginia rivers were redirected by the Appalachian Orogeny and subsequent creation of the Atlantic Ocean. The New River, unique in the state, continued to flow through its old channel. The New cut through the Appalachian Mountains as they rose from tectonic compression. The current New River Gorge in West Virginia is just the most recent demonstration of how the energy in the New River's falling water can defeat the strength of rising rock...
A map of the hydrography of Virginia shows the rivers run in different directions - they don't all flow south, or "down the map." Rain falling in Southwest Virginia ends up flowing though Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia to the Ohio River, then down the Mississippi River to New Orleans and the Gulf of Mexico. When the clouds move just a little further to the north or east, the rainfall will run downhill in the other direction. It can follow the Roanoke River watershed to Albemarle/Pamlico Sound, or the James River/Potomac River watersheds to the Chesapeake Bay.

  • National Assessment of Educational Progress
The National Assessment of Educational Progress, operated by the US Department of Education, bills itself as The Nation's Report Card . While not explicitly tied to particular national or state standards, its reports provide a way of looking at student progress across the country in the eight subject areas the NAEP covers. These are the arts, civics, geography, math, reading, science, US history, and writing. Each subject has its own page that contains findings from related assessments, answers to basic questions about assessment, and standards and frameworks links. The NAEP site contains the following results (and the year last administered): the arts (1997), civics (1998), geography (1994; the 2001 results are being analyzed), math (2000), reading (2000), science (1996;the 2000 results are due in the fall of 2001), US history (1994; the 2001 results are being analyzed), and writing (1998).

Barboursville Elkins Morgantown Star City ... St Albans WEST VIRGINIA - Geography E central state of the United States. It is bordered by Pennsylvania and Maryland (N), Virginia (E and S), and Kentucky and, across the Ohio R., Ohio (W). West Virginia is well drained; its important rivers include the Tug Fork, the Big Sandy River, the New River, the Kanawha, the Little Kanawha, the Cheat, and the Monongahela, all of which find their way to the Ohio. The New River and the Kanawha combine to form the most important waterway entirely within the state. West Virginia's climate is generally of the humid continental type, with hot summers (except in the highest areas) and cool to cold winters. West Virginia's natural beauty is spectacular, and the excellent hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, and skiing offered there form the basis of a growing tourist industry. The state has numerous state parks, public hunting areas, and state forests; Monongahela National Forest and a portion of George Washington National Forest (most of which is in Virginia) are in West Virginia. Numerous mineral springs are scattered throughout the state, notably at the resorts of Berkeley Springs and of White Sulphur Springs. Other tourist attractions include Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and various prehistoric mounds built by Native Americans, most notably Grave Creek Mound in Moundsville, one of the nation's largest. Charleston is the capital and largest city; Huntington is the second largest city. Wheeling and Parkersburg are also important urban centers.
