Starting Points was originally established with a four year grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York. It is now largely funded through state legislative appropriation. The state makes grants to Family Resource Networks, which must provide a 25 percent local match and develop contracts within the community to coordinate and fund services.
The mission of the National Center for Children in Poverty is to identify and promote strategies that improve the lives of low-income families.

Undergraduate Major in Sport Behavior
Commonly Asked Questions About the Major
What is the Major in Sport Behavior? The major in sport behavior is offered by the School of Physical Education. Students who pursue this major take foundation courses in the sport and exercise sciences, such as foundations of coaching, exercise physiology, kinesiology, introduction to athletic training, and the legal aspects of sport. Students complete a number of specialty courses in sport and exercise psychology such as the social psychology of sport, the African American in Sports, and exercise psychology. Students can elect to do a practicum in sport and exercise psychology if they meet the minimum GPA requirement. Students are also required to complete course work in psychology and sociology. Why Should I Select this Major? If you love sports and fitness, and you have an interest in psychology or sociology, you have found the perfect major. If you are interested in eventually working with people in sport or exercise settings by helping them cope with athletic injuries, manage stress, adjust to a career outside of sports, maximize their performance, or practice a healthy lifestyle, then you have found the right major. Do I Have to Be an Athlete to Pursue this Major?

Background
There is a magic bullet for health. It is physical activity. When challenged with a physical task, the human body responds through a series of changes that involve most, if not all, of its systems. When the body engages in physical activity several or more times per week, it undergoes changes that increase its efficiency and capacity. According to the 1996 Surgeon General's Report on Physical Activity and Health, moderate exercise has been shown to bolster the function of certain components of the human immune system, possibly decreasing the incidence of some infections and even certain types of cancers. Both moderate and intense levels of activity reduced overall risk of death even late in life. In a number of studies, sedentary people experienced between a 1.2- to 2-fold increased risk of dying during the follow-up interval than their physically active counterparts. The more activity you get, the lower your risk of heart disease, the number one killer in the nation. Physical activity also vastly reduces your risk of developing other chronic diseases or conditions associated with cardiovascular problems.

    NEW LIBRARY MEDIA
    PROGRAM IN HIGH DEMAND
By JULIE JORDAN Indiana State University is leading the nation in having a complete library/media services certification program available via the Internet. In its first semester of operation, 51 students from throughout the United States are enrolled in the innovative program. There is high demand for trained and certified individuals in public and school libraries, states Lawrence Reck, professor of education, who spent two years putting the program together. That was when the School of Education stepped in to rescue a library science program offered through the College of Arts and Sciences which was in danger of being terminated. "Upon consulting the job market possibilities, literally hundreds of job openings were noted," said Reck, "Every week since then, a stream of jobs have come across my desk, some weeks bringing 40 to 50 new job opportunities for both school and public libraries in Indiana alone. This gave me the impetus to develop a program to meet those needs." Designed for working professionals and other busy people wanting to obtain school and public library certification, the program consists of 27 hours of integrated course work leading to an undergraduate minor and certification, or graduate certification in library/media services. Core courses consist of literature, production of instructional materials, reference, practicum, cataloging, school and public library administration, selection of materials and electives in the computer, distance education and library assessment areas. The complete undergraduate program of 10 courses is currently online.
