Advocating and publicizing the value and importance of wetlands, ecology andconservation by means of our volunteer organization, educational programs
http://www.wetland.org.tw/english/about/about.htm
Chinese English News Theme ... Resource About We save wetlands not only because wetlands are facing serious damage and endless thereat, but because we want to recall people's sweet memories of wetlands, such as catching frogs, rowing boats, fishing and so on. Nevertheless, in modern life, these memories are getting farther and farther away from us.
Introduction of Wetlands Taiwan Wetlands Taiwan works to protect the ecology of wetlands in Taiwan. It consists of the study of ecology, adopting progressive activities for environmental protection, coordinating organization efforts and strength for related environmental groups and local community groups.
  • In 1994, the protection movement of the Sitsao wetland initiated the foundation of Wetlands Taiwan. In 1996, Wetlands Taiwan was officially registered to the Ministry of Domestic Affairs as a non-government organization.
Our Objectives
  • Designating the wetland protection zone for wildlife habitats, and restoring the ponds for wetlands conservation, by coordinating comprehensive ecological data, information, and laws.

Recent Studies on Ecology and Management of Wetlands/edited by R.G. Wetzel, A.G. van der Valk, R.E. Turner, W.J. Mitsch and B. Gopal. 1994, 246 p., figs., Contents: From the preface: "The highly successful IV International Wetlands Conference was organised by the International Association of Ecology (INTECOL) at Columbus (Ohio, USA) during 13-18 September 1992. This meeting was the largest ever gathering of wetland scientists with over 900 participants from over 50 countries (Mitsch 1993). More than 500 papers were presented in oral and poster sessions, in addition to 13 symposia. Seventy-two symposium papers are being published in a volume by Elsevier Science Publishers (Mitsch 1994), and numerous other contributions will appear in several international journals (e.g. van der Valk, in press; Jorgensen, in prep. Gopal and Mitsch, in prep.). The working group on wetlands of the Societas Internationalis Limnologiae (SIL), which cosponsored the Conference, also planned to publish a selection of papers from the conference in book form. For several reasons, however, it was decided to publish these papers as a special issue of the International Journal of Ecology and Environmental Sciences.

Dr. Kenneth R. Young ( kryoung@mail.utexas.edu
Department of Geography, UT-Austin Course goals:

Wetlands are unique environments created by the presence of water, special soil conditions, and plants adapted to those wet conditions.  They, along with adjacent floodplains, are productive and biologically diverse in their natural states.  They are also attractive places for the extraction of natural resources or for landscape conversion by people.  This course will use a graduate-student seminar format to examine the current state of knowledge about the ecology and physical geography of wetlands and riparian systems.  There will be coverage of the basics of wetland and stream hydrology, biogeochemistry, biological adaptations, and ecosystem functioning.  In addition, conservation aspects will be examined, including assessment of wetland resources, human impacts, and the potential for ecological restoration.  Examples will be drawn from around the world, with particular emphasis on North and South America. Students will be expected to read the relevant scientific literature, to actively participate in class discussions and one group project, and to write two short prose pieces, plus a longer essay on an individual topic.  Several visitors will also present their research in class; one is Dr. Margaret Stern, (PStern80@aol.com), who is a Visiting Resource Professor funded by LLILAS for this course and who will visit campus in late October.

My diverse research interests are related to the central theme of understanding fundamental mechanisms responsible for ecosystem function and structure. While I am interested in fundamental ecological questions, much of my research is also directly related to applied environmental questions. I also take a mechanistic, highly experimental approach to my research. My current research focuses on biogeochemistry and plant community ecology largely, but not exclusively, in wetlands. Many of these themes are tied together in a current project where we have constructed 54 "mesocosms" (large tanks with intact peat cores, including the vegetation) in northern Minnesota. The mesocosms have a series of water table and soil heating treatments applied to them to directly test the ramifications of climatic perturbations. A full suite of response variables are being measured from microbial ecology, to plant population dynamics, to carbon, nutrient, and energy budgets. You can view a web site for this project at www.nd.edu/~soilwarm.

Ecology - Habitats - Wetlands Return to Biomes and Habitats Main Page Buy Books about Wetlands Just about everyone has an idea of what a wetland is. It's a marsh, a bog, a salt marsh, a swamp, and so forth. On the other hand there is no consistent definition that everyone can agree on. For example the U.S. Army Corps of Engineeers defines it as:
The term "wetlands" means those areas that are inundated or saturated by surface water or groundwater at a frequency and duration sufficient to support, and that under normal circumstances do support, a prevalence of vegetation typically adapted for life in saturated soil conditions. Wetlands generally include swamps, marshes, bogs, and similar areas.
The Fish and Wildlife Service gives the following:
"Wetlands are lands transitional between terrestrial and aquatic systems where the water table is usually at or near the surface or the land is covered by shallow water. For purposes of this classification, wetlands must have one or more of the following three attributes: (1) at least periodically, the land supports hydrophytes, (2) the substrate is predominantly undrained hydric soil; and (3) the substrate is non-soil and is saturated with water or covered by shallow water at some time during the growing season of each year."
Among scientists, definitions become very complex indeed and there are whole books written about defining wetlands and their classification. Some of these manuals and alternative definitions of wetlands may be found in the general wetlands links.

Managing ecosystems entails achieving a balance of competing demands on natural resources and meeting these needs in a sustainable manner. Areas of Concentration Topical areas in the Ecosystems track typically focus on a particular ecosystem, and the Nicholas School has expertise in forests, wetlands, the tropics, and coastal/marine systems. Additionally, students can focus on watersheds or landscapes as a Concentration, recognizing these as the functional unit for integration and planning in many applications today. Approaches The approaches for Ecosystems include (1) field methods, (2) geospatial analyses, (3) community-based and participatory approaches, and (4) assessments based on models (statistical or simulation). Course Menus Courses supporting the Ecosystems track are taught within the Nicholas School, at several other departments at Duke, as well as through UNC-Chapel Hill and NCSU. The list of courses below is not exhaustive; see the advising web pages for additional course suggestions.
