Renewable Hydrogen Energy System For Households Application Junlin Ma, P.R. China November 1999 Lund University International Master Programme in Environmental Science Abstract The purpose of the paper is to define and analyze a renewable hydrogen energy supply system for households use. The energy system combines solar energy, wind energy, hydrogen production, fuel cell and households energy supply. The components of the system are available, but have not yet to be integrated in this way. This study concentrates on solar energy as problems of wind energy are of similar nature. The main advantages and problems of this system are discussed from technical, economical and environmental aspects. The possibility of applying this system into China is discussed and evaluated. Calculations of components size are made based on a Chinese village. Tibet and Xinjiang Provinces are recommended as suitable regions for application of this system. Keywords: Solar energy, Wind energy, Storage, Electrolysis, Fuel cells

The University of Newcastle INTRODUCTION RESEARCH PEOPLE ... LINKS Introduction The University of Newcastle Wind Energy Group has pioneered new developments in wind turbine technology ever since its genesis over a decade ago. Our work is primarily devoted to small wind turbines, addressing the following issues:
  • Fatigue and blade life problems because of the higher rotational speeds of small wind turbine blades when compared to large turbines. The need to ensure good energy extraction at low wind speeds. The extra complications associated with the free yaw arrangements common to small wind turbines. Optimisation methods for blade designs. Development of manufacturing techniques to ensure tight geometrical tolerances on physically small blades.

Use of Wind Energy in Hawaii
In 1997, wind machines in Hawaii produced about MWh of electricity. Most of the wind machines produce and sell electricity to local utilities. Show Table . Although the amount of electricity produced from wind in Hawaii has declined recently, there are several wind power projects currently under development: 10 megawatts at Kahua Ranch on the island of Hawaii, 20 MW at Maalaea on Maui, and possibly others.

It has set the target of generating 10% of all the UK's electricity requirement from renewable energy sources by the year 2010. Already over 750 modern wind turbines have been erected in England, Wales, and Scotland with support from the Non Fossil Fuel Obligation (NFFO) and the Scottish Renewables Order (SRO), which enables developers to sign contracts to supply electricity to the grid for 15 years. The installation of many more turbines is planned, as wind energy is one of the cheapest of the new renewables. It is competitive with new clean coal fired power stations and cheaper than nuclear power. The cost of wind energy varies according to many factors. On average for a new wind farm in a good location it will cost around 3.5 pence per unit, though electricity from smaller wind farms is more expensive.

http://www.eia.doe.gov/kids/renewable/wind.html
What is Energy Kid's Corner Milestones Energy Quiz ... About Energy Ant and Us Wind Energy Energy from Moving Air What is wind? Wind is air in motion. It is produced by the uneven heating of the earth’s surface by the sun. Since the earth’s surface is made of various land and water formations, it absorbs the sun’s radiation unevenly. When the sun is shining during the day, the air over landmasses heats more quickly than the air over water. The warm air over the land expands and rises, and the heavier, cooler air over water moves in to take its place, creating local winds. At night, the winds are reversed because the air cools more rapidly over land than over water. Similarly, the large atmospheric winds that circle the earth are created because the surface air near the equator is warmed more by the sun than the air over the North and South Poles. Wind is called a renewable energy source because wind will continually be produced as long as the sun shines on the earth. Today, wind energy is mainly used to generate electricity. The History of Wind
Throughout history, people have harnessed the wind in many ways. Over 5,000 years ago, the ancient Egyptians used wind power to sail their ships on the Nile River. Later, people built windmills to grind their grain. The earliest known windmills were in Persia (Iran). These early windmills looked like large paddle wheels.
