, wind energy has been the fastest growing energy source in the last decade. In fact, installed wind capacity worldwide has doubled in the past three years. Global sales of wind turbines are expected to grow from over $3 billion in 1999 to more than $10 billion in 2008. This growth has driven by the burgeoning demand for energy created in large part by the "new economy", a commitment from many industrialized nations to reduce greenhouse gases , a growing public desire for "green energy" sources, and technology that has gradually lowered the costs of generation. In the United States, the Department of Energy's (DOE) initiative, Wind Powering America , calls for:
  • Increasing the federal use of wind energy to 5% by 2010 Generating at least 5% of the nation's electricity from wind by 2020 Increasing the number of states with more than 20 megawatts (MW) of wind capacity to 16 by 2005
Wind Powering America would result in $60 billion in capital investment in rural America over the next 20 years and the creation of 80,000 jobs

I NTRODUCTION
The wind blows because the sun shines and heats areas of the earth unevenly. When this is coupled with the earth's rotation, prevailing wind directions are established. Harnessing this form of nuclear energy(fusion in the sun) has presented many engineering challenges. Many of those are now being resolved, and in the right location, wind power is a viable economic alternative. Of course, the wind is variable, so use of this energy source can only be supplemental until it is coupled with an economic energy storage system.

Wind Energy We have been harnessing the wind's energy Wind turbines, like windmills, are mounted on a tower to capture the most energy. At 100 feet (30 meters) or more aboveground, they can take advantage of the faster and less turbulent wind. Turbines catch the wind's energy with their propeller-like blades. Usually, two or three blades are mounted on a shaft to form a rotor. A blade acts much like an airplane wing. When the wind blows, a pocket of low-pressure air forms on the downwind side of the blade. The low-pressure air pocket then pulls the blade toward it, causing the rotor to turn. This is called lift. The force of the lift is actually much stronger than the wind's force against the front side of the blade, which is called drag. The combination of lift and drag causes the rotor to spin like a propeller, and the turning shaft spins a generator to make electricity. Wind turbines can be used as stand-alone applications, or they can be connected to a utility power grid or even combined with a photovoltaic (solar cell) system. For utility-scale sources of wind energy, a large number of wind turbines are usually built close together to form a wind plant. Several electricity providers today use wind plants to supply power to their customers. Stand-alone wind turbines are typically used for water pumping or communications. However, homeowners, farmers, and ranchers in windy areas can also use wind turbines as a way to cut their electric bills.

  • For every megawatt (MW) of wind energy produced, $1 million in economic development is generated. This includes revenue from planning, construction, etc. (Last year Texas produced approximately 900 MW of wind power, creating $900 million in economic development.)
  • Wind energy revitalizes rural communities by providing steady income through lease and royalty payments to farmers and other landowners.
  • Supplemental income: It is estimated that the income to a landowner from a single utility-scale turbine is approximately $2000 per year. For a 250-acre farm with income from wind at $55 per acre, this translates into an annual income from wind leases of $14,000, with no more than 2-3 acres removed from production.
  • Jobs: Wind energy resources bring needed jobs to rural communities and bolster farm incomes against bad weather. Worldwide, wind and solar industries are likely to be one of the main sources of new manufacturing jobs in the 21st century. Every MW of installed wind capacity creates about 60 person years of employment and 15-19 jobs. Therefore, a typical 50 MW farm creates 3000 person years of employment.

Swarthmore College Commits To Wind Energy
Swarthmore College has committed to meeting 2.5 percent of its energy needs through wind power. And thanks to a conservation effort by students, the College won't have to expend additional dollars to achieve a more environmentally friendly energy mix.
"It's a small step, but the beginning of what I hope will lead to the purchase of larger percentages in future years," said E. Carr Everbach, professor of engineering and chair of Swarthmore's environmental studies program. "Wind farms need to be supported. They will reduce our dependence on foreign oil and on fossil fuels in general. A commitment to phasing out our use of dirty power demonstrates the moral and educational leadership for which the College was founded."
Although its cost has fallen dramatically in recent years, wind-generated power still costs more than conventional electricity. To help cover the cost difference, Swarthmore students have agreed to reduce their energy consumption by turning off lights and similar measures.
Swarthmore is buying the wind power from newly developed wind farms in southwestern Pennsylvania operated by Community Energy, Inc., and Exelon Corp.
