This page last updated - WINDOWS 2000 In all the hype leading up to W2000's launching, almost two years ago, there was a great deal of talk about how much faster it would be - but honestly, I did not see it when I used it. Firstly - installation is slower than ME - or W98 - mainly because of the updates and the several Service Packs that you have to download right after installation. Secondly - the W2000 boot up is slower than 98 and much slower than ME. Thirdly - although, once booted, 2000 opens programs much faster than 98 or ME, I did not see where it ran them appreciably faster, once they were up. And it is much less forgiving of user errors than ME, though no more stable. As a business operating system - with skilled operators at the keyboards - yes, OK. But (a) it is not as good or flexible as XP Pro or XP Home and (b) as a business system for the little one person or two person business, it is like taking a hammer to drive a thumb tack - more than needed and much too complex. Small businesses can do everything they need to do with W98 or ME. Microsoft is still supporting W2000 - that support would have been better used for Windows 95 (now discontinued) - but then of course, Windows2000 is a better money cow. I see no point in my continuing support for 2000 - XP is far better. So I am EOLing it - although I would rather term Windows2000 EOUL - end of useful life. Taking its cost into consideration even XP Home Edition is better value for money.
