While the color of the faces may be different, the styles, of clothing, hair, slang, will largely be the same. Ninety percent of Native American students attend non-Indian schools, public or private, where culturally-aware teaching is lacking. Many believe the loss of traditional native knowledge and language is intimately related to the problems of high dropout rates and poor academic achievement - the achievement gap. "It's all tied up with identity and cultural dissonance," said Rosemary Christenson, professor of American Indian Studies at the University of Wisconsin and an Ojibwa Indian. "The effects of that cultural dissonance are widespread and continue to grow." But today, like branches coming to life in spring, Wisconsin Indian nations are once again standing strong. Culturally, politically and economically, the quality of life for many people of Wisconsin's Native nations is improving. Author Patty Loew, Ph.D., an enrolled member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe has written a powerful and important new book, "Indian Nations of Wisconsin: Histories of Endurance and Renewal." In her book, Loew weaves together ancient songs, origin stories, art, symbolism, and wisdom with information based on the historical perspectives of Wisconsin's Native Peoples history of the last two hundred years. In the United Sates they have conducted parish schools and orphanages in numerous archdioceses and dioceses; they have also operated schools and an orphanage in the Diocese of Hamilton, Canada; an Indian school at Harbor Springs, Michigan; a school for black children at Annapolis; and a deaf-mute institute in Louisiana. Their principal boarding schools are: Baltimore, Maryland; Fort Lee, New Jersey; Quincy, Illinois; Longwood, Chicago; Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin. Of their day and high schools the most prominent are at Baltimore, Quincy, Longwood and Chatawa, Mississippi. On 15 December, 1850, the motherhouse was transferred to Milwaukee, with Mother Mary Caroline Friess as vicar-general of the sisters in America. With money donated by King Louis I of Bavaria, a house was bought; this was absorbed later by Notre Dame Convent on St. Mary's Hill. On 2 January, 1851, St. Mary's parish school was opened and St. Mary's Institute for boarding and day pupils soon afterwards. On 31 July, 1876, owing to its growth and extension, the congregation was divided into two provinces; the Western, with motherhouse at Milwaukee; and the Eastern with motherhouse at Baltimore. By Dan Leitch, USA The Amur-Wisconsin Youth Development Project consists of a variety of partnerships, formal and informal, between organizations in the State of Wisconsin, U.S.A. and the Amurskaya Oblast, Russia. These partnerships, between governmental and non-governmental organizations exist for the common purpose of improving the lives of orphaned and at-risk youth in Wisconsin and Amur. The project has been spearheaded by an ongoing relationship between Muraviovka Park for Sustainable Land Use, Amur, Russia, and the program for juvenile offenders, Rawhide Boys Ranch, in Wisconsin, U.S.A. By working together since 1996, the project has achieved several practical results that may not have been possible otherwise. These include: Coordinating training visits for Amur children’s professionals to visit organizations in Wisconsin and for Wisconsin representatives to visit Amur programs. Conducting the international conference: “Children, our common joy-our common concern”. This conference was attended by Amur region law enforcement, social services, orphanages, boarding schools, and various other governmental and non-governmental organizations. The participants exchanged ideas on partnerships, methodologies, and information on the structure of laws and services.

Griffiths [pp. 4-11] The article outlines (1) the opportunities at Camp NaNa-Mah, located near the Uintah-Ouray Indian reservation, for children to be campers, youth to be staff and (2) the opportunities provided by the Camp to enhance the educational, emotional, and social and cultural functioning of the children and youth. The authors cite the need for year-round consistency in funding. The authors also believe a closer liaison between tribal and local school officials would help reduce gaps in service and provide greater alternatives to traditional educational techniques. Photo/Joe Koshollek University of Wisconsin women's rowing coach Mary Browning watches the action as her team practices in the tank at the boathouse in Madison. But if the University of Wisconsin women's open-weight rowing coach ever did go that route, the ad might read like this: "Wanted: Tall, strong, athletic women to participate in varsity water sport. Benefits include travel, companionship and potential scholarship. Apply at Wisconsin boathouse on Lake Mendota daily after class. No experience necessary. Will train." If Browning is creative she might add another line to her ad. "Opportunity, opportunity, opportunity." Rowing is billed as the oldest sport at the University of Wisconsin with records of competitions dating to 1874, but it is being rediscovered in Madison and around the country for a very good reason. Title IX has created a need for women's team scholarship sports to balance the scales of gender equity. Programs are popping up everywhere. Even at Arizona State, in the middle of the desert, there are plans to flood a dry gulch and have both oars in the water by 2002.

LESSON FIVE SCHOOL RECORDS Education for Wisconsin Indians began with the arrival of the missionaries. The 1880's brought another change. It now became standard practice for Indian children to be taken from their families and sent to boarding schools. After graduation students from Wisconsin went to: Flandreau, South Dakota, Genoa, Nebraska; Carlisle, Pennsylvania; and Haskell in Lawrence, Kansas. Occasionally two students would meet while at school and marry, with one or both never to return to their original home. It is possible to find if one of your ancestors attended a boarding school and which one. One of the questions on the federal census of 1910 Indian Schedule was about schools attended. The 1900 census (taken during the school year) lists the students as residents of the schools. Indian census rolls, such as the Durant Roll of 1908, list the school name as place of residence for students away from home. School records can give name, age, and names of parents. Siblings are sometimes sent to the same school, as are children in neighboring families. Among the government schools attended by Wisconsin Indian students were: Haskell Institute was established in 1884 in Lawrence, Kansas. Records 1884-1954 are available at the National Archives - Kansas City Branch, 2312 East Bannister Road, Kansas City, MO 64131 (861) 926-6272. These include general correspondence 1886-1954; individual student folders 1884-1954; student records 1894-1896; records of accounts of individual Indians 1909- 1954; claims files, and minutes of Haskell Club Meetings.
