Increase Lapham
from Wisconsin Authors and Their Works 1918
by Charles Rounds
Increase Lapham, one of America's best known naturalists and engineers, was born in Palmyra, New York, in 1811, and died in Milwaukee in 1875. He was assistant surveyor of the Erie canal and was on the engineering force that constructed the Welland and Miami canals. He came to Milwaukee in 1836. From 1873 to 1875 he was chief geologist for the state of Wisconsin. His contributions to the scientific knowledge of the geology, topography, and botany of his adopted state are second to none. Probably few of our citizens realize how many results of his labors are to be found in the Milwaukee public library, and the State Historical Library, in the form of maps, statistics, and tabulations of various sorts. Among his most important works are "A Geographical and Topographical Description of Wisconsin," 1844; "Antiquities of Wisconsin," "Geological Map of Wisconsin," 1855. The selection here given shows his careful, scholarly habits of thought; his painstaking sense of accuracy, even down to the minutest detail; and at the same time his enlivening and human imagination. Increase Lapham should be held in the memory of Wisconsin people as one of the choicest and most useful spirits who have been nurtured by or have ministered to her life and institutions.

The Physical Geography of Wisconsin
Lawrence Martin
Foreward by George F. Hanson
The immensely varied topography of Wisconsin provides examples of nearly every important physiographic process and topographic form. In the Driftless Area to the southwest, wind and water have weathered and carved away the countryside; along the Mississippi and other rivers are found most of the essential features of stream erosion and deposition; in the north and east glaciers have ground away the hills and left their mark on the plains and swamps. The Physical Geography of Wisconsin , reprinted from the second edition, 1932, of the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey Bulletin No. XXXVI (1916), offers a clear explanation of these and many other physiographical processes to the student and amateur geographer alike. The topography of the state is discussed in detail and, where necessary, related to its human geography; and the author has carefully explained and indexed all unfamiliar terms. The book is well supplied with maps, charts, and illustrations, and will be an excellent supplementary reader or guide in field trips for geography courses at all levels.

The Editor's Spin: the DANGLING conversation
    Stephen F. Nathans
October 2002 "Reason Number 5: Cocktail party conversation. Let's say years from now you encounter a black person at a social gathering and need a conversation starter. With this class under your belt, you can say, 'So, did you hear about slavery?'" Right about then I looked around the room and realized I'd be learning black history in a lecture hall full of white people. I'd estimate the white/black ratio at roughly 120:5. Six, if you count the professor. Fourteen years later I don't have the answers, but I'm mighty glad I've got the questions. Sometimes I find myself asking similar questions about the glut of information I encounter as editor of EMedia, the so-called revolutions and evolutions that fill the pages of this magazine. Distilling all that information, categorizing it, and presenting it with some measure of perspective and coherence, is most of what we do here. Though much of our task is to spread the word about DVD, digital video, and all the technologies of the digital studio, we also do a great deal of preaching to the choir.

    The Physical Geography of Wisconsin
The position of Wisconsin as one of the states on the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River is its chief geographical asset, for, as was well said by Theodore Roosevelt, these states are "destined to be the greatest, the richest, the most prosperous of all the great, rich and prosperous commonwealths which go to make up the mightiest republic the world has ever seen." The capacity of this state for population depends chiefly upon topography , soil and climate, hence it will be of advantage to study the nature of the surface features of Wisconsin and their origin. The state of Wisconsin is located about a third of the way from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean, near the northern boundary of the United States. It lies in what is commonly called the Middle West, between Lake Superior, Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River. Its greatest length is 320 miles, its greatest width about 295 miles, and its area 56,066 square miles. Geology Wisconsin includes a large area of the oldest rocks, called

March 17-21, 2003. The Arthur H. Robinson Map Library, a sub-unit of the Department of Geography, provides a comprehensive collection of cartographic materials to support teaching and research on the Madison campus. The Map Library is named for Arthur H. Robinson, the well-known cartographer who taught on the campus from 1945 until he retired in 1980. It is located in the north wing of the third floor of Science Hall in an area which was remodeled in 1982. HOLDINGS The primary materials in the Robinson Map Library are maps, approximately 276,000; aerial photographs, approximately 231,700; and air photo mosaic indexes, approximately 2,470. In contrast, the Map Library contains only about 900 books, chiefly gazetteers for the United States and foreign countries; and essential reference materials. Other materials include globes; plastic relief models; wall maps, slides, and videocassettes for classroom use; and examples of remote sensing imagery. MAPS The Robinson Map Library tries to maintain a comprehensive collection of general and political maps for all parts of the world, a selection of appropriate thematic (for example, population or soils) maps, and maps of major cities. Topographic map series at various scales are also collected; for example, the United States at 1:24,000; Canada and parts of Western Europe and Central America at 1:50,000; and other areas at 1:250,000, 1:1,000,000, or 1:2,500,000. Other groups of materials include Department of Transportation maps for Wisconsin cities; U.S. Bureau of the Census maps for Wisconsin cities and counties; maps for numerous cities in the United States and Canada (including many smaller communities); state and provincial highway and recreational area maps; and selected university and college campus maps.
