About The Project

The History of Cartography Project is a research, editorial, and publishing venture drawing international attention to the history of maps and mapping. The Project's major work is the multi-volume History of Cartography series. Its interdisciplinary approach brings together scholars in the arts, sciences, and humanities. By considering previously ignored aspects of cartographic history, the Project encourages a broader view of maps that has significantly influenced other fields of study. Organized by region and time period, the

Japanese Internment Camps
During the 1880s, Asian immigrants, mostly Chinese, were imported to the United States. By 1908, 135,000 Japanese had arrived. With the Oriental Exclusion Proclamation (1907) the U.S. government limited Japanese immigration. By 1924 further immigration was banned and those who had entered the country earlier were barred from becoming U.S. citizens. This ban was not lifted by Congress until 1952! On February 19, 1942 President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 that authorized US government to forcibly roundup 120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry into 10 internment camps At this time, the Canadian government interned 26,000 Japanese Canadians. Architectural Styles
Buildings are used for many purposes and are therefore classified into houses, stores, churches, governmental, and industrial. We will only concern ourselves with single-family residential and commercial structures, which are commonly found in Eau Claire and in the western Midwest. Buildings are classified into distinctive styles:
Residential Styles Commercial Styles
Study each so that you can recognize them when you are walking in Eau Claire and other US cities. A list of references is provided.
You have two ways to search for particular building (residential and commercial) styles:
Click on the letter to find an architectural style
To find specific styles by name, decade, number of stories, and building materials, use search At the bottom of all pages associated with this section, you will see this icon:
Click on this icon to return to this sectional page The great variety of house styles can be grouped by decades using the number of stories . Multiple and single stories houses were built in each decade, but certain heights predominated, as shown in the graph. But less common height types were also built: for example, one-story two-pen houses were built in the 1880s-1890s; two-story Art Deco houses were built in the 1930s; and one-story houses with huge roofs were built in the 2000s.

MAPPING SCIENCES AT UW-RF? GEOGRAPHY is a field that uses an interdisciplinary approach to understand patterns of human activity and natural processes on the surface of the earth. Geographers are often called upon to analyze and solve problems that deal with interactions between people and the environment. Geography appeals to students who have a wide range of interests that involve human activities and their impacts on the natural environment. MAPPING SCIENCES are a set of techniques that include Cartography (the art and science of map making), GIS - Geographic Information Systems (the analysis of spatial patterns), and Remote Sensing (the analysis of satellite imagery). These techniques are useful in displaying, understanding, and analyzing spatial relationships. Many other disciplines, such as biology, business, marketing, criminal justice, land use planning, and urban studies utilize mapping techniques.
Studying geography and mapping sciences at UWRF provides the skills to engage in a variety of careers. Through a combination of coursework and internships students gain first hand experience in geographic analysis. The use of computer technologies, through GIS and mapping, are areas where students may develop additional expertise. The department offers a Major and a Minor in Geography, a Minor in Geographic Information Systems and Cartography, and a Major in Broad Field Social Studies (Geography)/Education.

March 17-21, 2003. The Arthur H. Robinson Map Library, a sub-unit of the Department of Geography, provides a comprehensive collection of cartographic materials to support teaching and research on the Madison campus. The Map Library is named for Arthur H. Robinson, the well-known cartographer who taught on the campus from 1945 until he retired in 1980. It is located in the north wing of the third floor of Science Hall in an area which was remodeled in 1982. HOLDINGS The primary materials in the Robinson Map Library are maps, approximately 276,000; aerial photographs, approximately 231,700; and air photo mosaic indexes, approximately 2,470. In contrast, the Map Library contains only about 900 books, chiefly gazetteers for the United States and foreign countries; and essential reference materials. Other materials include globes; plastic relief models; wall maps, slides, and videocassettes for classroom use; and examples of remote sensing imagery. MAPS The Robinson Map Library tries to maintain a comprehensive collection of general and political maps for all parts of the world, a selection of appropriate thematic (for example, population or soils) maps, and maps of major cities. Topographic map series at various scales are also collected; for example, the United States at 1:24,000; Canada and parts of Western Europe and Central America at 1:50,000; and other areas at 1:250,000, 1:1,000,000, or 1:2,500,000. Other groups of materials include Department of Transportation maps for Wisconsin cities; U.S. Bureau of the Census maps for Wisconsin cities and counties; maps for numerous cities in the United States and Canada (including many smaller communities); state and provincial highway and recreational area maps; and selected university and college campus maps.

Rolling green hills dotted with Holstein cows, red barns, and blue silos. The Great Lakes ports at Superior, Ashland, and Kenosha. A Polish wedding dance or a German biergarten in Milwaukee. The dappled quiet of the Chequamagon forest. A weatherbeaten but tidy town hall at the intersection of two county trunk highways. Ojibwa families gathering wild rice into canoes. The boat ride through the Dells. The upland ridges of the Driftless Area, falling away into hidden valleys. . . . These are images of Wisconsin's land and life, images that evoke a strong sense of place. This book, Wisconsin Land and Life , is an exploration of place, a series of original essays by Wisconsin geographers that offers an introduction to the state's natural environment, the historical processes of its human habitation, and the ways that nature and people interact to create distinct regional landscapes. To read it is to come away with a sweeping view of Wisconsin's geography and history: the glaciers that carved lakes and moraines; the soils and climate that fostered the prairies and great northern pine forests; the early Native Americans who began to shape the landscape and who established forest trails and river portages; the successive waves of Europeans who came to trade in furs, mine for lead and iron, cut the white pines, establish farms, work in the lumber and paper mills, and transform spent wheatfields into pasture for dairy cattle.

Abbreviation:
WI The state's name is an English version of a French adaptation of an Indian name said to mean "the place where we live." In 1634, Frenchman Jean Nicolet became Wisconsin's first European explorer. The French controlled the area until 1763, when it was ceded to the British. In 1848, Wisconsin was admitted as the 30th state. Wisconsin's natural beauty has made the state a favorite playground of the nation. Vacationers enjoy the state's clean lakes, rolling hills, quiet valleys, deep forests and cool, pine-scented breezes. The winters are ideal for skating, skiing, snowmobiling and tobogganing. Many communities stage curling matches during the winter and others hold snowmobile derbies. Many annual events celebrate the state's rich ethnic heritage and diversity. With the nickname "America's Dairyland," it's no surprise that Wisconsin is first in the country in the production of milk, cheese, and butter. In fact, the loyal fans of the Green Bay Packers football team call themselves "cheeseheads." Milwaukee, the state's largest city, helps make Wisconsin one of the largest manufacturing states in the nation.
