About the Images of Wisconsin
The late Carl Guell, former Chief of Wisconsin's Bureau of Aviation Education and Safety, took over one thousand 35 mm slide photographs of the state's landscapes from the air during flights made from 1951 to 1979. It had been his wish that the photographs, which contain a wealth of geographical and historical information, be made available for educational and research use. He transferred his unique collection to the Department of Geography at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh In 1995, I cataloged and described the slides with the assistance of a grant from the University's Faculty Development Program. The images were subsequently digitized. Additional images and accompanying descriptions have been added to this page which began in 1997 with twenty photographs. My son Mark, who is an Assistant Professor at Southwest Texas State University, designed this web site and assisted in the interpretation of landscape features. He is a faculty member in the Department of Geography with special interests in river processes, theoretical geomorphology, hydrology, remote sensing, and the American West. Mark can be contacted at mfonstad@swt.edu

G eography answers two questions: where are things located and why are they located where they are? Geographers interpret and explain the occurrence, distribution and interactions of natural and cultural features on the earth. They analyze phenomena according to their locations, areal extent and spatial relationships. Prof. Rawling helps students in the Geography/Geology lab with map reading skills. Geology is the study of the solid surface of the earth and the processes which shape this surface. Geologists are interested in the origin and nature of rocks and sediments and the various processes that affect them. By looking at the earth's physical makeup and history, geologists find the key to discovering useful resources and understanding processes which may be beneficial or harmful to us. Geologists often work with geographers, chemists and physicists in their search for information about our planet's makeup. Career opportunities in geography and geology are many and varied. Most geographers hired today have specialized training in Geogrpahical Information Systems (GIS). Geographers may be hired in business, natural resources management, planning, environmental management and education. Most will work for private businesses, often analyzing spatial aspects of marketing or doing site analysis. Many geographers are hired by governmental agencies and the military. Increasingly geographic skills are requied in law enforcement, health and social services, banking, real estate and insurance.
