Home Current Issues Links CVSO Strategic Plan ... CVSO Members Only Section Current Issues GET TO KNOW YOUR CVSO County Veterans Service Officers (CVSO’s) have been employed in each of Wisconsin’s 72 counties since World War II to serve you! CVSO’s are your local resource for dedicated and professional assistance in obtaining federal and state veterans’ benefits. They provide the expertise and advocacy that veterans need to optimize their access to benefit programs. CVSO’s may intereact with a veteran many times through the years. A newly- discharged veteran is given an overview of their benefits and perhaps assisted in obtaining educational benefits and filing a disability claim for service-related disabilities. Possibly a few years later that veteran may be seeking assistance with a veterans’ home loan program or a personal loan. At another point, the CVSO may be assisting this veteran file for increased disability benefits because their service-related disability has worsened or assisting with a home improvement loan. CVSO’s handle inquiries and applications regarding veterans’ health care benefits for veterans of all ages, but these become of special importance as they get older. Long-term care benefits can become of issue to a veteran later in life as well. Burial benefit assistance is provided to the survivors of veterans. The widows of veterans are eligible for many state benefits, and in limited cases, federal benefits. CVSO’s are there to assist them as well.

Joseph Almodovar has never been one to let anything keep him down or prevent him from achieving his goals in life. As a youngster, Almodovar, a reservist with the 440th Airlift Wing, Gen. Mitchell International Airport Air Reserve Station, Wis., was raised in what he describes as a “challenging barrio” on the north side of Chicago. Despite all of the difficulties that kind of environment presented, he overcame them all to forge a successful career in the military. All of his hard work paid off in May when Almodovar earned distinction as one of the top 12 Hispanics in America’s armed forces for 2002. He received the recognition from National Image Inc. during its 14th annual Salute to Hispanics in the Military awards banquet in Las Vegas May 30. National Image is an organization based in Denver that is dedicated to dealing with education, employment and civil rights issues affecting the nation’s Hispanic population.

Public Schools
Public school data on districts, schools, principals, teachers and library media centers are reliable at the state and national levels. A public school is defined as an institution that provides educational services for at least one of grades 1 through 12 (or comparable ungraded levels), has one or more teachers to give instruction, is located in one or more buildings, receives public funds as primary support and is operated by an education or chartering agency. They include regular, special education, vocational/technical, alternative and public charter schools. Schools in juvenile detention centers and schools located on military bases and operated by the Department of Defense are included. They also include Bureau of Indian Affairs-funded schools operated by local public school districts. Traditional Public Schools are a subset of all public schools that are not public charter schools. They include regular, special education, vocational/technical and alternative schools. They also include schools in juvenile detention centers and schools located on military bases and operated by the Department of Defense and Bureau of Indian Affairs-funded schools operated by local public school districts. See also the definitions for public charter schools.

Private Education and the Public Interest A message from the Wisconsin Council of Religious and Independent Schools (WCRIS Religious and independent schools are partners in the education of the public. One out of every four K-12 schools in Wisconsin is a religious/independent school. Religious and independent schools provide students with the knowledge, skills and values that are essential for productive and responsible participation in a democratic society. Religious and independent schools are diverse and pluralistic. Religious and independent schools are urban, suburban and rural, large and small, progressive and traditional, religious and secular, independent and networked in various associations. In short, religious and independent schools offer parents and students a broad and meaningful range of educational options. Religious and independent schools set high standards and assure direct accountability. For all their diversity, religious and independent schools share a number of essential characteristics in common. Chief among these is the fact that education in a religious and independent school is always a function of choice.

Army ROTC
The ROTC program provides University students with leadership, management, and tactical skills which enable transition to military duty. ROTC is not a major field of study. Rather, it is a program in which students pursue a baccalaureate degree and take leadership, management, and other military-oriented courses that qualify them to accept a commission as an officer in the U.S. Army, Army Reserve, or National Guard upon graduation. The program provides a general knowledge of the contemporary role of the Army in support of national objectives, and affords a practicum in leadership and management skills. Credits earned in military science courses apply toward graduation requirements. The Army ROTC program is divided into two parts, the basic course (freshman and sophomore years) and the advanced course (junior and senior years). Both courses are administered at Marquette University. Students enrolled in ROTC must pay a one-time $25 part-time studies application fee. Credit hours earned at Marquette University are transferred to UWM student transcripts and count towards GPA and elective credit.

Employment and Education Experiences of Milwaukee Public Schools Graduates: A Follow-Up Study of the Class of 1999
a collaborative project of the Milwaukee Public Schools, Milwaukee Area Technical College and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2000. In Spring of 2000 a follow-up study was conducted of students who had graduated in June of 1999 (the Class of 1999) from Milwaukee Public Schools to determine their employment and schooling activities. The parents and guardians of all graduates were sent an introductory letter from Superintendent Spence Korte explaining the purpose of the study along with a written survey form. Families not responding to this initial mailing were contacted by phone during April and May of 2000. Survey responses tend to overrepresent graduates from traditional MPS high schools and to underrepresent families with disconnected or nonpublished phone numbers. Summary of Findings
  • Half of the responding graduates in the Class of 1999 were enrolled in postsecondary education in Spring 2000. Of these 60 percent attended Wisconsin public universities and colleges (including 21 percent at Milwaukee Area Technical College and 19 percent at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee).

For Decades, George Meyer Has Fought for
Preservation In Wisconsin (Washington, D.C., October 18, 2000) - George Meyer doesn't mess around. When his bill to control the sandblast-cleaning of historic buildings was making its way through the Wisconsin legislature, he could have given lectures. He could have circulated petitions. Instead, the day the state senate was due to decide on the issue, senators arrived at work to find a brick on each desk in the house. Half the brick was sandblasted; half was cleaned in a preservation-friendly way. No one could deny the damage sandblasting caused, and the bill sailed straight to the Governor's desk.
George Meyer,
Milwaukee, WI Meyer has practiced creative preservation for decades, showing rather than telling. The National Trust today announced it will recognize Meyer with a 2000 National Preservation Honor Award. National Trust President Richard Moe will present the award on Thursday, Nov. 2, during the National Trust's National Preservation Conference in Los Angeles. "George Meyer is a role model for all preservationists," Moe said. "Whether encouraging the rebirth of blighted downtowns, rescuing historic rural barns, or working behind the scenes to change public policy, his ideas have gone beyond Wisconsin to become national models. Preservation needs a George Meyer in every state."

Answer Book ... Community pages Military recruiters use new law to call students 10:15 PM 12/02/02 Andy Hall Wisconsin State Journal Military recruiters such as Army Sgt. 1st Class Dedric Knox of Madison are hitting the phones hard this fall as they begin using a provision in a new federal education law that expands their access to the names, addresses and telephone numbers of high school students. So far, no problems have been reported in Wisconsin, except for confusion last spring when the law took effect. Larger districts, including Milwaukee and Madison, often omitted addresses and phone numbers from directory data in the past but now will be required to provide the details to military recruiters unless parents block the release. They are wary, though, of being labeled unpatriotic as the nation girds for a possible war with Iraq and continues its post-Sept. 11 war against terrorism.

The six Indian Nations which currently reside in Wisconsin have survived for thousands of years. They provide a legacy that is intricately interwoven into Wisconsin's history and culture. Much can be learned from the stories relating the dramatic experiences of the Native American people and the lasting impact they have had on our state. The following pages outline four areas that highlight the values, customs, and cultural traditions which are shared among the Wisconsin tribes. By reading these pages, you will come away with a deeper understanding and greater appreciation of the Wisconsin tribes and their contributions instrumental in shaping the State of Wisconsin. Environmental Vision
Ithough they are diverse peoples, Native Americans are united by their deep attachment to Nature. Native Americans are guided by a strong land ethic and a belief in the principles of substantiality. The oral histories of many tribes include references to the Creator entrusting the land to Indian people, designating them land stewards.
Menominee Loggers How will my actions affect the earth's ability to sustain herself? How can I make sure that there will be enough resources for my children and my children's children? These are questions Indian people ask themselves before they make decisions that affect the environment. Many tribes call this the 7th Generation Philosophy, a fundamental concept that requires planners to ask themselves how their decisions might affect people living seven generations from now. It is a simple ethic with profound implications - a wise and generous way of thinking that ensures the survival of future generations.
