Presidents Introduction:
Happy Birthday Wombats! 2002 will may go down in history as being the greatest year for the club and thank you to Simon Walsh and the committee for what is going to be a damn hard year to beat – but in 2003 we are going to be bigger and better. This year will be celebrating the 10 th anniversary of the Singapore Australian Football Club – who started from humble beginnings back in 1993 – with the first ever official committee meeting being April 25 th 1993 – and so the Wombats were born. (Those who believe in evolution will know that the Wombat was a Lion for a week before becoming an obnoxious fat hairy beast). Being our 10 th birthday we plan to celebrate as only Wombats can.

http://www.singaporewombats.com/Wombats.htm
Welcome to my Web site! The Singapore Australian Football Club (SAFC) was formed on April 24, 1993 by ten homesick and football deprived Aussies who were toughing it out in the tropical balm of Singapore's business trenches.
With around 6000 Australian and New Zealand expats in the community the visionary founding fathers of Singapore Aussie Rules figured there had to be at least 30 blokes who could get together on a weekend and have a trot on the old paddock. Sounded simple The following 3 years were definitive for the team that Singaporeans would affectionately know as The Mighty Wombats. Through a series of recruitment drives that led team crusaders on a vigilant and exhaustive tour of pretty much every pub in the land, a playlist was assembled that made weekly intra-club games a reality.
Adding depth, match toughness and certainly a respect for the beer consuming capacity of our armed forces, the Singapore Wombats were able to schedule between 8-10 matches throughout each year against visiting Royal Australian Navy ships. RAN Liaison Office in Singapore has been instrumental in keeping the navy series alive. The game is always played in good spirit with the Navy boys as thankful of a run on terra firma as the Wombats were chuffed to strut their stuff as the national side and build team strength.
With an influx of expatriates to the Asia Pacific region during the 90's, several other Aussie Rules teams appeared on the scene:

Man accused of killing wombats
A MAN who allegedly killed several wombats by repeatedly running them over has been charged with cruelty.
Bathurst Police today said they had charged a 46-year-old man from Portland, near Lithgow, after the bodies of 12 wombats were discovered in NSW's Wollemi National Park last week. Investigators believe the wombats were killed early last week. It is alleged the wombats were run over by a vehicle, in some cases several times. The body of one animal has been sent to Taronga Park Zoo in Sydney, where it is hoped an examination will determine how it died.
The man has been charged with aggravated cruelty, cruelty and harming native fauna. He was released on conditional bail to appear in Lithgow Local Court on March 6.

Wombats bulldoze through tonnes of rock and rubble to create vast, complex systems of rabbit-like warrens. It must be cosy down there, because the grass-eating marsupials - the largest burrowing creatures in the world - spend roughly 80% of their time, literally, two to three metres down under. But how do the tank-like earthmovers design their architectural marvels to catch the summer breezes and keep out the chill winds of winter? And who rules the subterranean roost? Who mates with whom? Answers are thin on the ground. Quantum joins a team of researchers as they begin a long-term study to unearth the answers. (full transcript...) Reporter: Leigh Dayton

Full Program Transcript Quantum: Let's face it, wombats have a reputation for being fat, slow and stupid. So what explains the fact that they've been clever enough to survive on a continent that, on the surface, offers little comfort to these evolutionary oddities? Well, to find the answer, researchers are about to take drastic action.
Glenn Shimmin: It's a girl.

The wombat has long been my favorite animal, even though (being American) I've only seen them in zoos. My acquaintances, especially those who have seen my office, may note that I have much in common with the burrowing nocturnal marsupial. Perhaps. The following links feature photographs of and miscellaneous information about that noble creature, the wombat. Wombat's Room
The Kirinari toddler room is called The Wombats. It is for children 18 months to 3 years. It is a great, fun room that has a strong child-centred program. We are a busy room with many extended activities in place to stimulate the children's cognitive and intellectual development. We provide a environment that promotes autonomy and fosters self-esteem. Our art and craft activities are responsive to the needs of our very creative and hands-on toddlers. We provide a sound, safe and changing physical outdoor environment. We have a playground surrounded by native plants and gum trees. Our indoor area is spacious with two extra rooms for group times, dramatic play and block construction. There are places for 25 toddlers. The dedicated, professional staff have various recognised qualifications and a wealth of child care experience. We encourage our parents to be an active part of their child's day by bringing new idea's that help enrich the program. Parents are welcomed to bring aspects of their home culture into our centre.

Fence to protect wombats
September 28 2002 By James Woodford The entire population of critically endangered northern hairy nosed wombats will soon be in captivity. It is the first time in Australia that every member of a species of mammal has been fenced in to try to save it from attack. Only 110 of the species are left and, in the last few years, as many as 10 per cent of the 40-kilogram, one-metre-long marsupials have been savaged or killed by dingoes. The northern hairy nosed is the biggest and least known of Australia's three wombat species, which also includes the commons that live on the east coast of the continent and the southern hairy nosed, which inhabits South Australia. The northerns live in a single, tiny, arid patch of scrub in central Queensland, called Epping Forest National Park. Although two attempts have been made to establish populations in zoos, neither was successful. After years of struggling to guarantee the survival of the animals, the conservation team in charge of the northern wombats has decided to take the drastic step of building a 20-kilometre, 1.9-metre-high fence around the known habitat. By November, about 2500 hectares will be within the perimeter of the fence - built to similar specifications as a deer fence. ");document.write("

Not quite all my collection is portrayed here. I have three wombat t-shirts and a couple of sweatshirts, plus some stamps and a pin or two; and there are a few cuddly wombats there were camera shy at the photo shoot. I'll try and coax them out for next time. Update: Two more finally made it in front of the camcorder..... introducing Cori Wobble and Killer...! Breaking News........ New Wombat arrival.........! Proudly announcing a new Wombat! Wombat Ranger! Wobble Wombat, my very first! He was actually the Best Man at our wedding, complete with bow tie to match my husband's. I'll dig out the photo to prove it, if you want! Wobble has traveled extensively throughout the world - he makes a wonderful pillow on airplanes. He prefers to relax in first class, but will take a row of economy over one business class seat anytime! Another early wombat.....
this one goes by the name of Killer! Slightly smaller, this little lady is known as
Cori Wobble!

On Wombats
Like other pouch-toting mammals of Australia, the wombat is a marsupial. Nocturnal, burrowing, omnivorous (eats fibre-optic cable among other things); the hairy-nosed wombat lives in places like Humbug Scrub in the north-west of South Australia.
