The Wombat is a rare marsupial from dry and semi-dry areas on the islands of Australia and Tasmania . It is the largest burrowing mammal. This solitary animal is nocturnal (most active at night).
Anatomy : This thick-set mammal has very short legs, large paws, sharp claws, and a shuffling walk. Wombats range from 2.5-3.8 ft (0.75-1.2 m) long. It has a backwards-facing pouch (to keep out dirt as it burrows) in which its newborn will stay until it is able to walk. Wombats have four incisor teeth that continue to grow throughout their lives. The wombat has unusual, cube-shaped dung.
Diet : These herbivores (plant-eaters) eat grass, leaves, bark, and roots.

A MAN who allegedly killed several wombats by repeatedly running them over has been charged with cruelty.
Bathurst Police today said they had charged a 46-year-old man from Portland, near Lithgow, after the bodies of 12 wombats were discovered in NSW's Wollemi National Park last week. Investigators believe the wombats were killed early last week. It is alleged the wombats were run over by a vehicle, in some cases several times. The body of one animal has been sent to Taronga Park Zoo in Sydney, where it is hoped an examination will determine how it died. The man has been charged with aggravated cruelty, cruelty and harming native fauna. He was released on conditional bail to appear in Lithgow Local Court on March 6. Detective Senior Constable Ian Mitchell, from the Chifley Area Rural Crime Command, said police were working closely with the National Parks and Wildlife Service to find out whether any other animals in the national park had been injured or killed. "The roadway where the wombats were located has been searched, but we would like to talk to anyone who might have heard or seen anyone travelling through (Wollemi) National Park last Wednesday afternoon or evening," he said.

Problems Breeding Wombats
Basil's Battle

The following story is a little complex but is worth relating to enlighten you to the problems that can occur when keeping Hairy-nosed Wombats ( Lasiorhinus latifrons
Before starting the story I should give you a potted history of the animals involved.
Firstly there is Albert and Victoria, both hand raised and at the time of writing both about four and a half years old. At Inglewood they were in an isolated enclosure of approximately 100m2 and as they were raised together we decided to keep them together. They have now been co-habiting within this enclosure for about three years without any dramas.
Secondly there is Wombles (a twelve year old female), Sarah (an eight year old female) and Goldie (an eight year old male), again all hand-raised. This trio live together also without any great drama even though they were not raised together. However, the two females dislike one another intensely and have formed a mutual distrust. In late 1995 we were lucky enough to breed from these animals by a coming together of Wombles and Goldie, producing Basil in mid 1996. These animals have three interconnected enclosures, totalling about 250m
The next participant in this story is Barrelbum, a two and a half year old female. She also is a hand raised animal that has turned out to be real sook. She had a small isolated enclosure of about 40m

MARSUPIALIA Family VOMBATIDAE
Wombats
Geographic Distribution This family of two Recent genera and three species is known from eastern and southern Australia, Tasmania, and islands of Bass Strait. The sequence of genera presented here follows that of Kirsch and Calaby 1977). The name Phascolomyidae has sometimes been used for this family. Wombats resemble small bears in general appearance. The body is thick and heavy; the head and body length of adults is about 700-1,200 mm, and the weight is 15-35 kg. The muzzle is naked and the pelage is coarse in Vombatus, but in Lasiorhinus the muzzle is haired and the pelage is soft. Underfur is almost lacking. The eyes are small. The limbs are short, equal in length or nearly so, and extremely strong. There are five digits on all the limbs, and all have claws except the first toe, which is vestigial. Digits 2 and 3 of the hind foot are partly united by skin. The marsupium opens posteriorly and encloses a single pair of mammae. Wombats have traces of cheek pouches. They also have a group of glands of unusual structure inside the stomach that may be associated with digestion of a special type of plant food. The skull is massive and flattened. Wombats are shy, timid, and difficult to observe in the wild; they are sometimes active during the day but are considered nocturnal. They live in burrows and are rapid, powerful diggers. Under certain conditions they may construct burrow systems of more than 30 meters in length. Wombats dig with their front feet, thrusting the soil out with the hind feet, and use their strong incisors to cut such obstructions as roots. The burrow entrance normally is a low arch that fits the body. A grass or bark nest is located near the end of the burrow. A shallow resting place is usually excavated against a tree or log near the mouth of the burrow, as a site for sunbathing. Paths often lead from burrows to feeding areas. Wombats eat mainly grasses, roots, bark, and fungi.

PRACTICE INFO MEN: Sundays @ 4:00; pickup in IM gym Mon. and Fri. WOMEN: Intramurals Skidmore Ultimate's battle with old man winter continues... the men's tourney at Rutgers was cancelled due to ice covering the fields. Fortunately, the 'bats will see their next action under sunnier skies at "High Tide Session III" in Savannah, GA. For the second straight weekend, Skidmore ultimate had a tournament cancelled due to snow. The women did not make the trip to Philadelphia for UPenn's "West Philly Invite". This was after a weekend that saw the cancellation of Deleware's "FFFFF". Hopefully conditions will be better for the men at Rutgers next weekend. Intramurals are over and the Seniors have once again emerged victorious. They defeated the sophmores 11-8 in the finals. The Wombat men head off to their first tournament of the spring season this weekend at the " 2nd Annual Syracuse Indoor". They will face good competition including sectional matchups against Rochester and Cornell. The weekend will be the beginning of what hopes to be a great spring for the men. Check back next week for some results. Schedule has been updtated with a perspective on the Wombat's spring tourney list. Much of the semester is still tentative so chek back later for more updated info.

These animals are often found injured and are raised back to health after being hit by cars or attacked by wild dogs. They do not have great eyesight but have excellent senses of smell. The size of the nose shows this to be true. The powerful legs and long claws are excellent for digging up roots and yams to eat and for digging burrows. Peter Hollibone (The Earl of Wombatshire) Captain Wombat will reappear again for his fifteenth tournament. He is currently hard at work setting new training standards for The Wombats day and night events and supervising rigorous pre season training at Wombat lunches. Schooling the Lads in Morris Dancing has been added to his duties. Unlike Steve Waugh, there is no threat to his captaincy based on a close examination of his batting and bowling averages which are in line with Wombat norms. Neville Clearson (Niftus Erectus) Regretfully awaiting a knee operation and cannot appear in usual manner as opening bat. Will be accompanied by private nurse Linda who will be responsible for provision of internal lubrication and frequent massage to Nifty's swollen joint. Ken Dashwood (Dasher) Will be prominent again having largely recovered from painful shoulder injury. Has been in Thailand in last few weeks arranging large erection for the comfort and protection of those fortunate enough to be in its shadow. In his spare time has been rehearsing exotic table top dancing techniques for his guest appearances at the spotlight bar. We expect above average batting and bowling from Ken this year. Alan Tasker (Figaro) Still court jester to the Kingdom and official heavy roller to the pitch during his otherwise brilliant batting and bowling appearances. Actively rehearsing his techniques with the Trusty Disposable Gillette in continuation of his ground breaking research into removing surplus growth near the main popping crease.

    Freida van Staden
Wombats My fascination and endearrnent towards wombats goes back to 1996 when I was
introduced to them firstly in an article written by someone who reared a baby wombat
( sadly I have since lost the article) and then seeing them in real life in Sydney
and Brisbane, Australia. They are nocturnal and so I have seen mostly sleepy
wombats. I would love to foster a baby wombat one day. However they like to burrow underground. Therefore it is really an unrealistic wish of mine to have one as a pet. Wombats are marsupial mammals native to Eastern Australia and
Tasmania. They can weigh up to 39 kg and can grow approximately to 1 meter.
They have a short 25mm tail and stumpy legs.
Wombats live in hilly forest country and like to burrow underground.
They can burrow for as long as 20 meters. Australia has three species of wombat The common wombat - found in forested habitats and grazes
in forest clearings of Tasmania, NSW and Victoria. The Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat - found in South Australia and Western Australia.

Update - some members of the public have made disparaging comments about my wombats page. I can't understand why... these are fairly innocent critters.
