HOW DID WOMEN IN HISTORY GET STARTED? Women in History, a non-profit organization, was founded in 1991 by Sophia Mastrandreas-Dadas , and a group of women from Lakewood, Ohio who were like-minded in purpose and intent. All felt that for too long, there existed a lack of information as well as educational outreach efforts concerning the contributions made by women to the growth and development of our nation. These women felt a debt to their ancestors and a responsibility to future generations to begin the work that would enhance and complete the history of women in America.

Click here for details. NO-TA-BLE , adj. 1. Worthy of note or notice; remarkable. 2. Characterized by excellence or distinction; eminent. The lives of ALL women are "notable" - at least in the eyes of the genealogists who research them, and that is the ONLY criteria necessary for a woman to be included at this web site. Some are famous, others are not. Those who are famous have, until recently, often been overlooked by mainstream historians. The extent to which our schoolbooks and popular folk collections have largely ignored the most vivid, powerful women is simply astounding. There are an even greater number of women who, while possibly not contributing anything historically significant, nonetheless managed to lead very interesting lives. The fact that they survived at all is a credit to their courage and stamina. There was nothing "ordinary" about our female ancestors who risked their lives traveling in tiny ships across the ocean, living on the frontier and giving birth to numerous children. Most were uneducated. Many of their lives went unrecorded, or at best, are only noted in the records by their married surname and a few dates. The lives of some women are known to us only because of the historical circumstances that pushed them, often unwillingly, into the limelight, such as the colonial women who were accused of witchcraft or taken captive by warring Native Americans.

    100 Important Women in History
Welcome to the website of the 100 Most Important Women of All Time: a page of 100 women who history would not be the same without. I, Shelby Ellery, created this site as a gold award project, the highest award that can be awarded in Girl Scouting that has to take at least 50 hours to complete. I chose this project because I believe that women aren't recognized enough. I can name so many men that I have been taught by my teachers, but I really can't name all that many women. This site is a resource for all those people out there who are just like me, no matter what age, curious about how women also affected who people are today and who the world wouldn't be the same without. Take a moment to choose someone you have never heard of and look through this window into their soul, who they really were or are. By all means, help yourself. And thanks again! Jane Addams
