Who We Are
The Women's Lunch Place was created to provide a safe, comfortable daytime refuge, nutritious food, and basic resources for women and children who are homeless and poor. We offer these services in the spirit of respect and friendship, fostering a community committed to meeting the women's needs as they themselves define them. We believe that no one should face hunger and homelessness. Everyone deserves the fulfillment of her basic human needs. Poverty and homelessness are not the fault of individuals but rather the results of social crises and injustices. To survive and leave poverty and homelessness, each woman needs to feel known and loved as an individual and cared about as a member of the community. We seek to keep our services non-institutional and personal, responding to each individual's needs as she herself defines them. We celebrate the many cultures that make up our community, and we strive to develop an organization that reflects the women's diversity.
We believe: No one, no matter what her circumstances, should have to face hunger or homelessness.

The Women's Lunch Place is a daytime shelter for women, located at 67 Newbury Street in Boston. Our mission is to provide a safe, dignified daytime refuge, nutritious food and basic resources for poor and homeless women. In additon to these services, we strive to offer a spirit of community and love for each woman as a sister, accepting her as she comes to us, without judgement or assumption. Our primary goal is to show our guests that they are special. Fresh flowers on the tables, tableclothes, real china and silverware, birthday celebrations, and conversations over lunch are just some of the ways we seek to accomplish that goal. As a volunteer, you will be an integral part of our mission and community. That is why we require an eight hour commitment per month for six months from all volunteers. We welcome and encourage volunteers to spend more than their required time with us if they wish.
We are open Monday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering breakfast (in a self-serve fashion) and sit-down lunch prepared and served from our kitchen by volunteers. We expect to be open on Sundays this year. We provide include personal care items, clothes, laundry and shower facilities, a nap room, a quiet room, an advocacy room, and a children's room. I mention organization and service because MIT does not have a Women's Center or LBGT Center so the Program helps connect students to the necessary resources where possible. I also supervise students ( link ) as the Coordinator for the Women's Studies Program. Since we are an intimate program, quite probably the smallest undergraduate academic unit in the Institute, I get to know many of the students who concentrate in Women's Studies, and definitely all of the students who minor and major in our program. Additionally, I get to know the UROP women, since all of the Women's Studies paperwork and payroll is handled by me. I keep in touch with former students and delight in their news. Many have been double majors combining everything from Physics to Brain and Cognitive Science to Chemical Engineering with Women's Studies.

46. Public Record Office | Pathways To The Past | 1901 | Living At The Time Of The C
Despite Victorian ideology about a woman's place, in 1901 there was debate aboutwhether women should work, and, if so, what kind of work should they do.
http://www.pro.gov.uk/pathways/census/living/making/women.htm
The notion of 'respectability' reigned supreme in the late Victorian age and women especially were expected to uphold and live by it. Their place was supposed to be in the home - the 'domestic angel' - and yet the 1901 census reported that 31.6% of females over the age of 10 were in paid employment. Who were these women and what work did they do?
A woman's place is in the home?
The 1901 census found that less than one-third of women were in paid employment. However, this statistic is almost certainly underestimated because work done in the home often went unrecorded. Most women who undertook paid employment in 1901 did so because they had to. Widowhood, for members of the working classes, almost always meant penury; some women felt the need to boost the family income because their husbands were unemployed or poorly paid; others worked because they had no other family members to support them. There were, of course, some women who worked to maintain their independence, but they were in a minority. The paid work undertaken by women was varied. The 1901 census recorded women employed as lawyers' clerks, physicians, dentists or dental assistants, teachers, authors, journalists and shorthand writers. However, the vast majority - nearly 80% - were in domestic and other services or in manufacture (usually connected to textiles).

SPECIAL ISSUE: WOMEN, GENDER AND WORK (Part II) CONTENTS
Introduction
Persisting sexual stereotypes, inadequate information and real problems of adjustment constrain progress toward equality between men and women. The holistic approach adopted in this two-part special issue views the role of productive work in human life and the distribution of unpaid work as well as the myriad questions relating to employment. A multidisciplinary gender perspective contributes to better policy and overall outcomes for both men and women. To apply it requires examining their respective roles, the changing nature of the family, the differential impact of economic and financial policy, the use of legislation, and the empirical bases for assessing progress. Assessing equal opportunities in the European Union Janneke PLANTENGA and Johan HANSEN To usefully evaluate the extent of equal opportunity demands innovative methodology. The authors select indicators of the relative opportunities of men and women (the "gender gap"), including differences in employment, wages, and the sharing of unpaid work; and also indicators of women's absolute situation in the labour market. These indicators are then estimated empirically for 15 Member States, with highly revealing results. To close the circle, the main determinants of equal opportunity are posited including the rate of economic growth, tax systems, working-time regimes, childcare facilities and parental leave arrangements. Seeing country performance in that light produces compelling lessons for policy.
