UPCOMING MEETINGS To be announced UPCOMING EVENTS "Supporting the Arrival of Children for ISU Faculty and P & S Employees." To: President Geoffroy From: Jacquelyn Litt, Chair, University Committee on Women Date: February 14, 2002 RE: Response to Policy "Supporting the Arrival of Children for ISU Faculty and P & S Employees." The University Committee on Women has carefully reviewed the policy ìsupporting the arrival of children.î We view this policy as a step forward in expanding the opportunities for new parents to care for children. We applaud the effort to include both partners as eligible for parental leave and tenure clock/professional review revisions. We also applaud the decision to include adoptive as well as biological parents as having rights within this policy. We believe that these innovations open up possibilities that have been closed to many new parents who are employed at Iowa State. Because we believe the policy does not yet address the full range of issues regarding parental and family leave we can only give it a ìqualified endorsement.î We request that the policy be implemented for a probationary period of one-year during which UCW and other stakeholders can refine the policy and monitor how it is used.

A Brief History of Project Link:
A message
from
Karen Newell, project leader
The 1970s brought many changes to the world of workers and to the classrooms where workers were being prepared. Traditional roles were challenged, and it became apparent that attitudes and pedagogy needed an overhaul. Free To Be You and Me was a popular book with a strong and important message: children must be affirmed for their unique qualities and potential. Girls could be anything they want to be. Girls could be police officers, astronauts or scientists. It came as a revelation to some and a liberating vision to many. Change was in the air. Many of us were thrilled and empowered. Many of us were threatened and afraid. As the mother of two daughters, I must say I joined the former group with enthusiasm. As educators we needed to look at our own biases and prejudices. We did. We challenged the way women and people of color were represented in our textbooks and programs. Language became more inclusive. The appellation Ms. was born, and appeared on many of our classroom doors for the first time. Project Link grew from these changing attitudes.

I serve on several groups in the business community; the Red Cross. How do you balance time between work and personal life?
I belong to a group called "Women of Conviction." At our last meeting, we all agreed that after September 11, getting balance in our lives, sorting out priorities is the best use of the time we have. What book are you reading now?
Katherine Graham, Washington What is one way that your life is different from your mother's?
My mother grew up thinking that others were in charge of her life, and she never has really shaken that idea. I grew up knowing that I had to be in charge of my life. We've been asked for our continued participation and confidence in the American economy. What does that mean to you?
Insofar as I am financially able, I am continuing to behave as I always have regarding spending and saving, but I appreciate that some sectors are experiencing distress. Business startups, for example, are having to seriously re-think their plans. Corporate sponsors are cutting back on the amount of contributions they are making to support business development. Our incubator was built with funds with business development money allocated by Congress after the base closures. The new economic stimulus package, in my view, should address business incubation in an important way.

  • Settling the issue of salaries for employees during forced absenses During the Gulf War the employees were required to stay at home and not come to work in the event that: (1) The security forces gave such an order to the entire population, or (2) all educational institutions were closed and the employees were instructed not to leave children without supervision. The question of who should bear the burden of payments for the absentee days received a partial answer much later. In order to prevent harm to employees, in general, and to working mothers who are the sole wage earners, in particular, an obligatory payment of salary must be determined for absentee days, and employers should receive government compensation. Forbidden to dismiss parents who are absent from work because they are taking care of their children during emergency periods.

Gender and Industry in Stalin's Russia
    Wendy Z. Goldman
Paperback In stock In the annals of Industrialization, the Soviet experience is unique in its whirlwind rapidity. Even more striking was the critical role of women: in no country of the world did women come to constitute such a significant part of the working class in so short a time. They composed a larger percentage of the working class, filled an unprecedented share of jobs in heavy industry, and served as the first targeted ‘reserve’ for Soviet labour policy and recruitment. As women undercut the strict hierarchies of skill and gender within the factories, they forced male workers to re-examine their ideas about ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine’ work, and women’s role in the work place. Using new Russian archival materials, Women at the Gates is the first social history of Soviet women workers in the 1930s.

Women in the workplace EDUCATION Historically, teaching and nursing are among the few professions that have not been dominated by men. If you’re going to choose someone to represent as a whole………choose a woman.” Christina McAuliffe, 1986 The hearts and. minds of American children have been in the competent hands of women educators since before the American Revolution. But the women who taught then and in the early days of the republic had little formal training. Education for girls and young women was geared toward instructing them to be good wives, mothers, and homemakers—not teachers of academic subjects. In the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, women taught the rudiments of reading, writing, and arithmetic in dame schools in their own homes to pupils who paid tuition. As late as 1827, Mary Jacobs announced that she would teach "reading, writing, cyphering, spelling, needlework and fancy Knitting at her house by Sewall's Bridge." The tuition of six cents a week "could be paid in sugar, tea or coffee."

Women do not yet have equality in the work place. The politicians in power can change the course of women's rights. by Caroline Gaudiani Strong, intelligent women all over the United States have been fighting to secure equal rights for women for decades now. Some women have done this through the political route, working with, and often against, our nation's politicians to show the rest of the nation that women will not settle for anything less than what is rightfully ours. Many women have shown their dedication not through a public political medium, but by setting an example in their daily lives as people who command respect, speak for themselves, and believe in every woman's right to do so. The constant struggle to remain true to one's self and demand equal freedom in every facet of life is no less noble than the political quest to change things in government. Unfortunately, many women do not hear about pressing and key political issues that could immediately affect the freedoms they consider a part of daily life. "Employers are affected in two ways: the direct cost of employee health care manifested in medical and pharmacy benefit plan claims and the indirect costs connected with employees' lost productivity," said Alyssa B. Schultz, a research associate at the U-M Health Management Research Center, which conducted the study with Chicago-based Bank One, the nation's sixth-largest financial services corporation. Although large epidemiological studies have established the national prevalence of migraines and suggested their big costs, few employers have been able to apply these projections to their specific work force. The U-M research center worked with Bank One to distribute a health risk appraisal to about 93,000 employees in 2000. It included specific questions related to chronic disease including heart disease, diabetes, migraine headache, back pain and cancer, said Bank One Medical Director Wayne Burton, M.D. Twenty-one percent, or 19,853 employees, returned the questionnaire. Analyzing demographic and payroll data along with the survey responses, the researchers estimated corporate costs due to migraine-related absenteeism and reduced on-the-job productivity to total $21.5 to $24.4 million for the year, Burton said.
