Offered by Women's Studies
Master of Arts degree in women's studies. Major in women's studies. Minor in women's studies.
The Major
Women's studies explores who women were, who women are, who they might be, and how their lives and human interactions are affected by society's values, traditions, and institutions. SDSU has offered courses in women's studies since 1969 and has one of the strongest academic programs in the nation. Its origins are in the women's movement, and its vision includes a world free of sexual, racial, age, and class distinctions and other inequalities. Courses are designed to provide students with a coherent, integrated, and academically rigorous education. Content areas include concepts of self and family, theories of sex differences, history, cultural contributions, and the study of society's institutions. The emphasis is on increasing the awareness of objective conditions in women's lives throughout the world, and on developing critical analytical skills.

Writing Proficiency ("W") Basic writing proficiency is required of all students. A student may earn basic proficiency by registering for courses designated with a "W" after the course number in the Schedule of Classes (for example: COMM 103W, PHIL 110W, etc.). At the end of the semester an evaluation committee and the instructor will determine whether the student qualifies for basic proficiency. If so, notification of this certification will be made on the student's grade report and on her permanent record. A transfer student who has earned a "B" or better in a composition course at the former college may submit at the end of her first semester a portfolio of papers written in Saint Mary's courses. The evaluation committee will review the portfolio for basic writing proficiency. Students must also complete the advanced writing proficiency requirements of their majors.

The Women’s Studies Program offers a Master of Arts degree in Women’s Studies and an undergraduate minor. An undergraduate major is pending. As an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural field, Women’s Studies establishes new scholarly and applied possibilities through expanding and questioning existing modes of knowledge. At the undergraduate level, minors are required to take 2013: Women: Images and Perspectives and five other courses of their choice. Students generally elect to focus these five courses in an area that: (1) enhances their major; (2) provides depth to their major; or (3) allows the student to pursue an area of personal or professional interest. Most courses at the undergraduate level are cross-listed with other academic programs.

    Introduction
It is not necessary to point out to the RLG East Asian community the extreme usefulness, even indispensability, of the RLG SHARES program. Without it, our ability to serve our clientele would certainly be much less; with it, we have access to a virtual library many times greater than any individual one. However, the actual RLG East Asian community is also much more than simply a database available to us all; it is also the combined knowledge, dedication, and experience of a diverse and very talented group of curators, bibliographers, selectors, reference librarians and catalogers with intimate knowledge of their collections and a wide array of specialities. Only some of that knowledge and expertise is directly reflected or reflectable in the RLIN database. It was our belief that it might be beneficial to all of us to make more widely known this larger, more intangible storage of knowledge. For exactly such a purpose we have prepared this short guide as a very brief overview of our combined knowledge, present and past. It lists in a more or less logical format the answers we received to the following question:

Email your order for a paper copy to library@cdr.dk Contents Abstract Introduction 1. An introduction to the topic 2. A review of the literature ... Top of this page Abstract The paper discusses the existing literature on women's work and the household in Latin America. This should be seen in the context of women increasingly entering the labour market in Latin America - as well as in many other developing countries - and an increasing interest among academics for exploring the complexities of the household. One can distinguish between three 'angles' taken by the studies. One set of literature looks at how the household influences women's employment. Another angle is taken by those whose concern is with what happens with household relations, once women take up employment. Lastly, there is a set of literature which looks into what household strategies - including em ployment - women pursue in the context of a deteriorating economy. There are a number of gaps in all three sets of literature, and in addition to this, one can iden tify short-comings which cut across the literature. One is the inadequate bridging of supply and demand or micro and macro factors, which in effect means, that potential causal - and thus important - factors are not accounted for. Secondly, little of the literature thoroughly ac counts for the complexities of the household; often these are recognised, but when it comes to the actual analyses, they are ignored. Lastly, many of the studies have serious methodological deficiencies which questions the conclusions reached by the authors.
