Latex Allergy
Professor of Pediatrics, Director, Pediatric Allergy and Immunology, Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) , and Chief of Medicine at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in that same city. Dr. Kelly and his colleagues are studying the humoral, cellular and molecular immunology of latex allergy and the optimal strategy for prevention of this disease. Latex allergy is a new disease initially described in the U.S. literature in 1989. It may result in allergic reactions of asthma, rhinitis, anaphylaxis and death. Since 1990, as one of the original investigators of this problem, MCW has played a major role in delineating the epidemiology of the clinical disease in patients while defining the responsible allergens at the molecular and cellular level. This disease disproportionately affects 10% or more of health care workers who wear latex gloves frequently as well as patients with spina bifida or multiple surgeries. Under the direction of Dr. Kelly, Medical College of Wisconsin is currently in year two of a model program to prevent the development of latex allergy in health care workers. (U60/CCU514541-01) This is one of the most pervasive problems facing the medical field where the caretakers themselves have become victims of the disease. The optimal approach for education, allergen avoidance and prevention of allergy and occupational asthma in health care workers is being designed through specific avoidance procedures in 1000 health care workers over a five year period at two hospitals.

How Will It Affect Patient Care? Carolyn Crandall, MD, FACP
Dr. Crandall is Assistant Professor of Medicine, UCLA School of Medicine, and Information Technology Component Leader, UCLA National Center of Excellence in Women's Health, Iris Cantor-UCLA Women's Health Center. Address for correspondence: Carolyn Crandall MD, FACP, Iris Cantor-UCLA Women's Health Center, 100 UCLA Medical Plaza, Suite 250, Los Angeles, CA 90095. E-mail: ccrandall@mednet.ucla.edu. Recent polls suggest that as many as 70 million Americans have used the Internet to search for health-related information.1 There are an estimated 15,000 health-related websites, with new sites appearing every day. As a result, Internet users are bombarded by a tremendous amount of health information. Although users will find an abundance of useful resources, they are also likely to retrieve information that is irrelevant, inaccurate, or misleading. It is often more difficult to discriminate promotional or advertising material from legitimate information on the Internet than it is on television or in print. The fact that different search engines will produce different resources also has the potential to be confusing. Still, there is considerable optimism that the Internet may help to create a true partnership between health care providers and consumers.2 At least through the mid-1990s, the typical Internet user was a well-educated, 40-year-old, relatively wealthy white male.3 Given the strength of interest in using the Internet for health information, this pattern of usage was bound to clash at some point with the reality of health care decision making. Women, after all, make about 80% of health care decisions and about 60% of health care purchases.3 And now women aged 50 and over are one of the fastest-growing online populations.4 In 2000, the number of women on the Internet is predicted to equal the number of men.

Migraine is approximately three times more common in women than in men. Women tend to have longer attacks and are more likely than men to experience aura with migraine, but both sexes can experience frequent and severe attacks. Treatment principles for migraine and guidelines for the use of prophylactic and abortive therapies are generally consistent between males and females. However, due to hormonal changes induced in the female during menstruation, oral contraceptive use, pregnancy, and menopause, gender-specific therapeutic strategies are often necessary when treating migraine in females.

Abstracts for papers
Cathy Boorman, University of Sheffield. Royalism, Female Authorship and the Idea of the Court, 1640-1660 This paper will focus upon the idea of the court within royalist women's writing of the 1640s and 1650s. During the Renaissance the court became increasingly identified as a site within which the construction of an authorial identity took place. However, the court remained a problematic arena for female writers, whose self-expression and self-representation within it was strictly controlled and limited. During the 1630s Henrietta Maria's perceived dominance within a court that styled itself as a model of virtuous authority led to conflicts within royalist culture itself at the outbreak of civil war. I will show how the fragmentation of court culture after 1642 paradoxically enabled the emergence of more flexible forms of authorial subjectivity for royalist women writers. Matthew Dimmock, Royal Holloway, University of London.
