This catalog is valid for the incoming class of 2002/03 only. The printed version, available through the Registrar's Office (570-577-1201), is the official, definitive version. Peace Studies Minor Coordinator: Tansa G. Massoud There are over 160 higher learning institutions offering peace studies programs in the United States and over 500 colleges around the world. The United States government gave official recognition to the field of peace studies in 1984 when it established the U.S. Institute of Peace. In 1987, the Peace Studies Association, a professional academic body, was established. In addition, the field is represented by the Consortium on Peace Research, Education, and Development (COPRED). There are at least six scholarly journals devoted to peace studies. Peace studies is an interdisciplinary field of study housed primarily in the social sciences. Other labels for peace studies include peace and conflict studies, peace and justice studies, and conflict analysis and resolution. Peace studies explores the causes and nature of human conflict from the interpersonal to the global level. Historically, peace studies programs concentrated on negative peace or absence of war. Today, more attention is devoted to the concept of positive peace promoting social, political, and economic justice. A partial list of topics under peace studies includes violence, war, ethnic conflict, conflict management, conflict resolution, peace making, law, human rights, values, justice, environment, racism, sexism, and nonviolence. Normatively, the goal of peace studies is to promote a more just and peaceful world.

  • Introduction Lesbian Feminism, In Brief
    Introduction
While doing research for a video project on early 1970s lesbian feminism, we found few Web resources dedicated to this vibrant, controversial, and radical movement. The materials on this site primarily cover the development and emergence of lesbian feminism, a moment from roughly 1970 to 1975, and addresses the related but separate trajectory of lesbians of color. In 1970, lesbian feminism emerged as a radical political project from within the U.S. left the anti-war, student, and civil rights movements; welfare activism; anarchism; second-wave feminism; and also from lesbian subcultures. The early 1970s lesbian feminists, and especially separatists, were mainly but not exclusively white, and came from a range of class and cultural backgrounds. Radical lesbians extended feminist theory even further, pointing out that (compulsory) heterosexuality is key to male dominated society (a.k.a. patriarchy). The logical strategy for feminists is to escape heterosexuality, and embrace lesbianism, in order to free themselves, overthrow the social order, and create a more just society.

REGISTERED NURSE TO REAR ADMIRAL
A FIRST FOR NAVY WOMEN
by Estelle McDoniel
In 1945, Lieutenant Alene B. Duerk, registered nurse, stood on the deck of the USS Benevolence, one of the Navy’s large hospital ships. It had taken many years of hard work for her to become a capable nurse and an independent woman, as her mother had hoped. Now she was headed for the coast of Japan in a fleet of 600 ships. It was wartime, and the future looked uncertain.
But Alene Duerk’s dedication would lead to a long and productive career with the Navy, and her efforts in caring for patients and training other nurses and corpsmen would make her a trailblazer. In 1972, when she officially became the Navy’s first woman rear admiral, she said, “There is no men’s Navy and no women’s Navy, but one Navy. Young women can now see that the sky’s the limit.” Hardback

Breaking Free
The Story of a Feminist Baptist Minister
By Jann Aldredge-Clanton Jann Aldredge-Clanton became one of the first women ever to be ordained as a Baptist minister in the South. It has not been an easy road. She almost lost her job as a professor at a Baptist university because she refused to sign a fundamentalist statement of beliefs. She was labeled a “heretic” for calling God “She” and “Mother.” Others said she couldn’t be an ordained minister because it would be “unbiblical.”
