CO- Colorado Academic Standards
  • Subject: Reading and Writing Standard 2: Students write and speak for a variety of purposes and audiences Writing and speaking are essential tools for learning, for success in the workplace, and for responsible citizenship. Developing a range of writing and speaking abilities requires extensive study, practice, and thinking. Students need frequent opportunities to write and speak for different audiences and purposes, and they need to be able to communicate expressively, informatively, and analytically. Growth in writing and speaking abilities occurs by applying skills to increasingly challenging communication tasks.
    • Grade/Level: Grades K-4 Performance Indicator: generating topics and developing ideas for a variety of writing and speaking purposes (for example, telling a story, publishing a class newsletter, writing a letter to an adult, writing or orally presenting a book report, creating and producing a play, introducing a speaker or an event, narrating a presentation);

How Children Develop
Listening Milestones Talking Milestones Reading Milestones ... Let Them 'Read' Play With Letters Write Together Activities Resources Kindergartner Home ... Main Play With Letters Make words out of play letters. Magnetic refrigerator letters, letter blocks, and plastic letter tiles are wonderful tools. Try making a word your child knows, such as "cat," take away the "c," and ask her to change the word to "mat," "fat," and "sat." Using another word she knows, reverse roles and have her ask YOU to spell a new word from a known word. By playing these simple games, you are helping your child understand the relationships between letters and sounds, a skill that is essential for learning to read. Introduce lower case letters as well as upper case. Children generally learn upper case letters first because the straight lines of upper case make these letters easier for them to recognize and write. Kindergarten is a good time to introduce lower case letters. As your kindergartner learns words such as "you" and "the," he can learn them in lower case letters, just as they appear in the books he sees. For your kindergartner, look for plastic refrigerator letters, puzzles, and alphabet books that come in lower case versions.

Play on Paper
PLAY ON PAPER is a short booklet that introduces pre-kindergarten and entering kindergarten children to a number of reading readiness concepts. The first two pages are for information about the child and for a child to draw a picture of himself or herself. The next two pages are for recording information about the child's favorite stories: title, author, and reason why the story is liked. Then the first three letters of the alphabet are introduced, both upper and lower case, with opportunities for letter matching. This is followed by a page where the child can create a picture out of letter forms. A pull-out section, inserted between the "Cc" page and the letter picture page, contains the complete alphabet, upper and lower case, in a script commonly used in prereading and initial reading materials. The next section of the booklet provides practice in rhyming and matching words by their initial sounds. Completing the booklet are pages for practicing the numbers 0-9 and for dictating phrases or sentences to the heading "What I want to Learn in School." On the last page, continuing on to the inside of the back cover is a second alphabet chart. This one, however, includes directional arrows, indicating for each letter the correct stroke order for printing. See the Play on Paper Activity Booklet You can use Read Write Now! Materials at:

    • If your child is drawn to the visual arts
    • If your child enjoys writing and word play
      Creative writing is a wonderful tool to help children express themselves. Writing a play to be performed in the garage, putting together a newsletter with friends, designing a comic strip, or keeping a secret diary gives kids complete control over their writing process, empowering them and increasing their confidence. Poetry writing is often introduced into the school curriculum in the third or fourth grade as children begin to grasp the meaning behind symbolic language. Poetry magnets on the fridge are a playful and impromptu way to experiment with language and ideas. Hang your child's favorite poem in a central location for discussion.
    • If your child plays at performing
      An interest in music, dance, or drama can be enlivened with lessons. Try turning to institutions and individuals in your community. YMCAs, church groups, and universities often offer a wide selection of classes and activities for older children, which provide exploration and interaction with their peers. Help your child choose a class or a teacher, but let him drive the process. Lessons, rehearsal, and practice require discipline but should always be pleasurable. When it comes time to organize a schedule, choose a structure on which you both agree. If you have a basement or garage, your child might transform it into a rehearsal and performance space. Save some old clothes to contribute to a costume wardrobe, help create a dressing room with curtains and mirrors, or volunteer to run the box office.
