The following is a detailed guide of the Ride Program at our Marin Chapter in California. Please feel free to use any ideas and forms that work for you, leave those that do not. One Day Ride Program In Marin, our program is designed to serve as many kids as possible, since we are located in a large metropolitan area. Therefore, we have designed our program around a one-day ride program. Some chapters have longer programs that work with the same group of kids for several sessions. The routine that we have established allows us to fulfill our mission: the kids have fun, remain safe, learn how to challenge themselves and are exposed to the natural environment.

Working with Volunteers
Setting up the Task Force
Any organization that hopes to succeed in raising money needs a Fundraising Committee or Task Force with a mandate of responsibility for fundraising. The traditional model calls for all board members to take an active role in fundraising. This model seldom applies to grassroots groups. For example, in many organizations, the board is unwilling or unable to do fundraising. In an umbrella group, the board members may be representatives of other levels of the group, and feel their first loyalty is to their home branch. If board members are consumers of your group's services they may have no interest or experience in fundraising. Board members may also be appointed by funders, or brought in for other expertise. Even when the board is willing and able to fundraise, they typically have too many other responsibilities. do the work, not just talk about it. Membership in the Fundraising Task Force (or whatever you choose to call it) group should imply taking an active role. The people on the central Task Force should all be leaders of sub-groups, and have the necessary teams of people to carry out the work. A number of the key positions are outlined below. Not every group needs all these positions filled, of course, and others are not on the list.

TIPS FOR WORKING WITH VOLUNTEERS
The primary role of the volunteer is to support your work as a teacher by assisting students with their classroom work or other activities as requested. Your role is to direct, support and recognize the work of volunteers. If volunteers will be coming to your school on a regular basis, we strongly recommend that you provide a thorough introduction to the school site so the volunteer feels comfortable with the facilities and has an opportunity to meet other key people in the school. A simple introduction to your school might include:
  • Introductions to the principal, main office secretary, volunteer coordinator* and other school personnel;
  • Tour of the school with particular attention to rooms the volunteer might use such as restrooms, faculty room, library, resource room, phone locations;
  • Procedures to follow if the volunteer is late or absent or if teacher is absent; an explanation of school rules and emergency procedures;
  • School sign-in procedures.

Module 4: VALUING DIVERSITY
Component/Transparencies/Handouts Transition A. Valuing Cultural Diversity B. Definitions ... Learning Objectives
Purpose
The focus of this module is the diversity which surrounds us in all areas of our lives. The module starts with a sharing of being different and how that felt. This leads into a discussion of the differences within and between spiritual communities. Milton Bennett's Continuum of Cultural Sensitivity is discussed. In a small group activity, participants are asked to look at clusters of words and to discuss the process of categorizing people and groups. This leads into a discussion of the barriers such as language which contribute to diversity but also prolong the tendency of society to stereotype based on differences. It's purpose is to reinforce each participant's concept of his/her cultural identity. The last activity gives participants the opportunity to share the meaning of their spiritual experiences.
Goal
The goal of this module is to create an awareness around the issues of diversity by exploring self-understanding, differences within spiritual communities and differences among various spiritual communities.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this module, participants will:

First issued April 98 and revised December 2000
The intention of this memo is to clarify District practice and identify steps which should be undertaken in future to ensure uniform practice across the District. Please read the attached papers and reflect on practices within the Unit that you are responsible for. This paper represents expectations locally. Working with Volunteers discussion paper- Managers Meeting - Youth and Community Service in Chorley Involving volunteers in the service raises a number of practical issues and some principles. A number of these are outlined below and should be read alongside the Volunteering leaflet, which describes the District's practices in working with volunteers. Principles: 1. Volunteers are valuable staff team members who work alongside paid staff to enable services to young people and communities to be delivered. 2. Volunteers are recruited, deployed and subsequently supported using the same systematic approaches which are undertaken with paid staff.

The Workshop: 'Working with Volunteers The more hearts, the more hands: Aftercare by volunteers. “Since I have been supporting ex-inmates my own faith has been stimulated.” “As prison chaplain I can finish my work with more satisfaction, for a volunteer will continue outdoors the work I started indoors.” “Without my buddy I had not managed; I really feel everything will be fine again.” Three statements from different points of view, which show the use of volunteers. In the first part of the workshop we focus on the question how ISNA (Inter-church Foundation Aftercare Ex-inmates) started a network of volunteers in the Netherlands. We tell about problems and possibilities. A volunteer will tell about his experiences. Of course you will be provoked to ask, respond. In the second part we will learn by exchanging our experiences. Are there volunteers in your country? How does it work? Are there problems? What are the risks? What are the chances in a uniting Europe? Jacques van Hout and Herman Vooijs are looking forward to meet you! Herman Vooijs
