Home UNDERSTANDING VOLUNTEERS and VOLUNTEER BOARD S http://www.cybervpm.com/contents.htm , is your starting point for information on and instruction in volunteer program management. Excerpts from : Resources for Volunteer Program Managers , A Web Book by Nan Hawthorne. This is from the chapter on Volunteer Management at http://www.cybervpm.com/superv.htm Four Typical Basic Motivators of Volunteers Praise These volunteers enjoy recognition for their talents and accomplishments. They like being thanked, given gifts, singled out for achievements. They probably find situations where there is little, no or exclusively negative feedback very frustrating. They enjoy a volunteer program where the results of their effort are readily seen by others, especially a supervisor or the volunteer coordinator, and where some sort of yearly recognition event occurs. They might work best in a volunteer position where talents already possess can be used. Affiliation These volunteers like being part of an organization, a club or a team. They enjoy opportunities to get together with others with similar beliefs, backgrounds or goals, and being associated with a well-known cause or group. They probably would not find working alone or for an obscure organization very satisfying. An affiliation-motivated volunteer works best in a volunteer position where social opportunities are part of the program, where they work on group projects, represent the organization to the public or wear a badge, uniform or even a T-shirt with the organization’s logo

Our names are Patricia Correa and Michelle Modestino and we have a dream. No, not the dream Martin Luther King had, a different one. Not nessasarily a better dream, but it might still change the world.
Good day to all Web surfers. I have thought so many times of how much I love my cat and dog. If you have pets then you know what I mean. But let me tell you, not many pets have the oppertunity to live with loving and dedicated owners. Instead, they live in homes which cannot offer the love and kindness you give to your pets. They become abused and start to wither away and the, put in a small pound. The pound is so small that, over a short period of time, an animal must be put down. Not a pretty thought. This mostly happens in 3rd world countries but don't be that relieved, because the story I am going to tell you may change your perspective of how much dogs and animals get hurt each day and how little they are being cared for. I was going on a trip to Nicaragua in Central America. I had not seen my Grandmother in 4 years and I was very excited, but all that soon changed. On the 5th day of the two weeks we were to spend there, we were on our way to a hotel. Suddenly I saw a small building. It basically looked like a large worn out bathroom that looked like it could hardly fit 5 people inside. I glanced at the side door and my eyes widened in disbelief. The sign said, "Pet Shelter." I couldn't believe my eyes, but I stayed silent bearing the heavy heart inside of me. I thought to myself

Welcome to International Voluntary Service IVS is a peace organisation working for the sustainable development of local and global communities throughout the world. We offer you a unique opportunity to make a difference in the world around you by taking part in International Voluntary Projects. Projects are generally short term (2 - 4 weeks) and you do not need any specific skills or qualifications to take part. If this sounds like something you might like to do..... READ ON!
Our Mission
To promote peace, justice and greater understanding between people and nations through voluntary work
We believe that the more people can meet, talk with and achieve with others, the more understanding will develop. IVS brings people together from different countries, cultural heritage, social and political backgrounds to do voluntary work on practical projects of direct benefit to local communities. The voluntary projects provide opportunities to gain new skills and to live and work together with other people from different countries which in turn helps to break down stereotypes and deepen mutual understanding. This involvement often helps volunteers become more aware of the ways in which collective action can benefit community development and social inclusion. We hope that through this experience, volunteers gain a greater understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing many communities and by recognising responsibilities to themselves and their communities, they will continue to work for a more peaceful and just world. For many volunteers, taking part in an IVS international project is a life changing experience. Why not join us?

Program Management Planning Training Working with the Community Working with Volunteers Individual Support Volunteer Groups or Teams Program Meetings Content Evaluation Program Management Working With Volunteers Volunteers are the core of your project. It is through their time, expertise and effort that the goals of your project will be realized. One of the most important roles of the coordinator is to offer and organize support to volunteers. Yet this can also be one of the most intimidating parts of your job. Managing a group of your peers, particularly in subject areas in which you are not expert, can be a daunting task. Remember you are not expected to know it all. Most volunteers come to the project with enthusiasm and curiosity. They also come with varying degrees of experience, different motivations for getting involved, varied amounts of time they can give to the program and differing degrees to which the work relates to their academic, personal or professional goals. It is important for coordinators to identify the strengths and the needs of their volunteers. Many coordinators incorporate this process into the initial training for the semester (see Training). Clarifying strengths and needs can give you a sense of the expertise that you have in your program as well as areas that may require further training throughout the year.
