The Drop Zone Virtual Museum is dedicated to preserving human history by examining the oral histories, e-histories, and photos of the participants of the seminal event of this century - World War II. No great army in history has been without its elite formations. Units such as the Praetorian Guard of Rome, the Imperial Guard of Napoleon and Roger's Rangers of Colonial America had legacies that often outlived the armies they were only a part of. During World War II, America's Rangers, Airborne, Marines, and OSS were America's elite. These are their voices and photos.

World War II in Ukraine
The Ukrainian Experience in World War II
With a Brief Survey of Ukraine's
Population Loss of 10 Million
by
Andrew Gregorovich
The monument over the grave of the great Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko in Kaniv,
Ukraine, surrounded by the barbed wire of a German concentration camp in World War II.
Published in Commemoration of
the 50th Anniversary of V-E Day
and in memory of the ten million.
This article is intended to provide some of the basic information about the Ukrainian experience in World War II. Ukraine's role in the war is basically unknown in the world. For example, one American encyclopedia of World War II does not even include an entry on Ukraine. For almost a half century Soviet and Ukrainian archives were closed to historians but today it is possible to do scholarly research in Ukraine and Moscow. This may finally provide a more accurate picture than has been possible with existing sources. Every Ukrainian family suffered losses in the war and many had victims of both Hitler and Stalin. Perhaps it is significant that out of three of my relatives who were victims of the war, two were shot by Stalin's USSR and one was shot by Hitler's Gestapo. Ukraine has thousands of World War II monuments. Very small villages often have a monument listing the names of the World War II dead. Ukrainian losses probably numbered 10 million or half of the entire USSR total and twenty per cent of the entire World War II total of fifty million dead. I would like to thank the University of Toronto for granting me a year of Research Leave (Sabbarical) which provided me with the time to research this article and my forthcoming book. - A.G.

The memory of all those who lost their lives will forever be in our hearts and prayers. We would also like to thank all of the brave men and women serving in uniform who are following in the footsteps of their grandfathers and grandmothers of the World War II generation by protecting our nation.
GOD BLESS AMERICA The "Rutgers Oral History Archives of World War II," directed by Sandra Stewart Holyoak, is an enterprise to record the personal experiences of the men and women who served on the homefront and overseas. It is based on in-depth interviews of individuals who lived through World War II, beginning with an initial target group of Rutgers College alumni and Douglass College alumnae (formerly, New Jersey College for Women). We currently feature 266 oral history interviews. If you would like to be notified when new interviews are added, press either the E-Mail button or the animated envelope below and send us a message, which includes your e-mail address. A Bibliography
    Navajo Code Talker Dictionary
Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Peleliu, Iwo Jima: the Navajo code talkers took part in every assault the U.S. Marines conducted in the Pacific from 1942 to 1945. They served in all six Marine divisions, Marine Raider battalions and Marine parachute units, transmitting messages by telephone and radio in their native language a code that the Japanese never broke.
The idea to use Navajo for secure communications came from Philip Johnston, the son of a missionary to the Navajos and one of the few non-Navajos who spoke their language fluently. Johnston, reared on the Navajo reservation, was a World War I veteran who knew of the military's search for a code that would withstand all attempts to decipher it. He also knew that Native American languagesnotably Choctawhad been used in World War I to encode messages.
Johnston believed Navajo answered the military requirement for an undecipherable code because Navajo is an unwritten language of extreme complexity. Its syntax and tonal qualities, not to mention dialects, make it unintelligible to anyone without extensive exposure and training. It has no alphabet or symbols, and is spoken only on the Navajo lands of the American Southwest. One estimate indicates that less than 30 non-Navajos, none of them Japanese, could understand the language at the outbreak of World War II.

World War II Navy Art: A Vision of History
Seeing that historic events were unfolding in the rising tension of the "undeclared war" of the North Atlantic, New York muralist Griffith Baily Coale convinced Admiral C.W. Nimitz to send Navy artists into action to record military activities in ways that cameras and the written word could not. The Navy Combat Artist Program was approved and in August 1941 Coale became the Navy's first combat artist on active duty. Eventually the Navy sent eight artists to serve in combat areas and record their impressions of the action. This small number produced over 1,300 drawings, watercolors, and paintings, which were used to illustrate books and magazines, and toured the country in exhibitions designed to inform and raise public morale. They documented a variety of actions in the European and Pacific theaters, including the Normandy invasion, campaigns in North Africa, and the invasion of Okinawa. Their art captures the experiences of war and the men and women who fought in it. The captions you see here are the artists' own words, oftentimes written on the reverse of the paintings, giving their unique insight into the events as they saw them.

British cryptanalysts, Alan Turing at the forefront, changed the course of the Second World War and created the foundation for the modern computer. In 1991 the Bletchley Park, the wartime home of Allied code breaking, was saved from destruction by Tony Sale and some colleagues. They transformed it into a museum devoted to the recognition and reconstruction of this crucial aspect of world history, which had remained completely secret until the early 1970s.

US made moral compromises in using former Nazi spy network against Soviet threat

This series is based on some of the more than 3 million files the CIA is declassifying as part of a global effort to unlock the last stash of secrets about World War II war crimes. By Mark Fritz / Globe Staff / March 11, 2001 He was a civil servant in an uncivilized society, an underling assigned to incinerate the secret messages that circulated among his sinister superiors. He was a small cog in a big bureaucracy built by madmen to murder millions. Fritz Kolbe hated his job. But what could one man do? Damage, he decided. Serious damage. In the summer of 1943, Kolbe stuck a stack of papers into a pouch and took a train from Berlin to Bern, the Swiss capital. He met Allen Dulles, a Wall Street lawyer hired to build an American espionage network in a neutral nation that had become a flea market infested with spies-for-hire, amoral entrepreneurs who smuggled goods and laundered cash without choosing sides. Kolbe charged no fee for a commodity so rare it often went unrecognized: the truth. His information was staggering. Hitler was ordering the liquidation of Jews in Rome. Stalin was installing socialism as the Red Army pushed into Europe. A spy who penetrated the British embassy in Turkey was feeding the Nazis details about the planned landing at Normandy.
