Following graduation from the University of Iowa in 1923, he worked as a meat salesman before embarking on a successful coaching career.
In 1926 and 1927 he was the head football and wrestling coach at Wabash High School. His two teams were successful as his football squad outscored its opponents 343 to 19 in 1926 and his wrestlers in 1927 captured the state high school wrestling championship. His success caught the eye of the athletic department at IU and he was hired as the varsity wrestling coach and freshman football and track coach. His team won 34-straight dual matches from February 13, 1933 against Cornell College to February 6, 1937 against Lehigh University. The Olympic Games
In the ancient times, four great game festivals were held on Greek land: The Isthmians, The Nemeans, The Pythians and The Olympic Games. Part of a religious festival, the Olympic Games were held every four years at Olympia. The four year interval was called an Olympiad , and was the system upon which time in ancient Greek history was calculated. The games were so important that even wars were stopped at the time they were held. The first Olympic Games were held in 776 B.C. At first, only one race (the sprint) was run. Later, the discus and javelin throw, broad jumping and wrestling were added. The Olympic Games were held for more than 1,000 years. They were abolished by the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius in 394 A.D. The Games were revived in 1896 to promote understanding and friendship among nations. The first modern games were held in Athens, Greece. Young men and women come from all over the world to compete in various sports and represent their country. They live in an Olympic Village at the site of the games. The Olympic Games are organized and governed by the International Olympic Commitee (IOC). It sets the general program, chooses the city where the games are to be held, and determines the standards of amateurism. Each participating country has a National Olympic Commitee that is responsible for arranging the participation of the nation's athletes in the games.

They received a crown made from olive leaves, were entitled to have statues made of themselves placed at Olympia, and were believed to bring their hometowns into favour with the Greek gods. How The Olympic Games Began
Nearly 3,000 years of Olympic history
The Olympics first started nearly 3,000 years ago in Ancient Greece . The ancient Greek civilization enjoyed many sports—including running, boxing and wrestling—because they believed physical activity and competition were very important. Every Greek boy was expected to participate in sports , because the Greeks believed the skills they learned in sports would make them better warriors.
In honour of Zeus
The ancient Greeks also believed religion was very important. Zeus was their greatest god. The ancient Greeks built a shrine to honour Zeus in the Valley of Olympia. Greeks gathered at the shrine to play their favourite sports as part of their religious ceremonies.
In 776 B.C. the ancient Greeks first recorded the results from their sporting events held in honour of Zeus. Every four years after that these Games were held, and because they took place in the Valley of Olympia , they became known as the Olympic Games

The Olympic Games represents the absolute epitome of athletic accomplishment. Being a member of the Olympic team is an honor which lasts more than a lifetime....it endures throughout the centuries. Milo, the greatest of all Greek athletes, was an Olympic wrestling champion whose fame has persisted for nearly 3,000 years. Take a moment to ponder the greatest names in Olympic history: Jim Thorpe, Jesse Owens, Cassius Clay, Johnny Weissmuller, Carl Lewis, George Foreman, Jesse Owens, Nadia Comaneci, Alexander Karelin.... The Olympics create absolute legends. The Games are as big as it gets in the world of athletics....a great showcase for all sports, and for wrestling, one of the original sports of the Olympics. The Olympics were born in 776 B.C. and flourished for nearly 1000 years. They were discontinued by Emperor Theodosius of the Roman Empire in 394 A.D. because he considered them too pagan for a Christian empire. The Olympics were reborn in Athens, Greece, in 1896. The Sydney Olympics are the 24th Games of the Modern Era. In these period, 43 American wrestlers have earned the right to be called Olympic champions, including 41 in freestyle and two in Greco-Roman.

Long streaks are one of the cornerstones of athletic legend. For instance:
    • Oklahoma football's 47-game winning streak; Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak; Rocky Marciano's 49-0 boxing record; Dan Gable's 181 straight wins in high school and college style matches.
And then there is the lonnngggg winning streak turned in by Henry Wittenberg, 1948 Olympic wrestling champion at 191.5 pounds. The streak is long. In fact, it is so long no one is certain just how long it really is. In his National Wrestling Hall of Fame biography, it is said Wittenberg "wrestled more than 300 matches without a loss." Actually, it was much more than that, according to the man who should know.
