Widely recognised as the world's oldest competitive sport, wrestling appeared in a series of Egyptian wall paintings as many as 5000 years ago. When the Games began in 776 BC, more than two millenniums later, it included wrestling, and, in the years that followed, wrestling featured as the main event. The sport would return in a similar role when the Olympic Games returned after a 1500-year absence in 1896. Organisers, seeking direct links to ancient times, found a natural in the sport that had enjoyed popularity across much of the ancient world, from Greece, Assyria and Babylon to India, China and Japan. They resurrected Greco-Roman wrestling, a style they believed to be an exact carryover from the Greek and Roman wrestlers of old.

The games were staged in the wooded valley of Olympia in Elis. Here the Greeks erected statues and built temples in a grove dedicated to Zeus, supreme among the gods. The greatest shrine was an ivory and gold statue of Zeus. Created by the sculptor Phidias, it was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Scholars have speculated that the games in 776 BC were not the first games, but rather the first games held after they were organized into festivals held every four years as a result of a peace agreement between the city-states of Elis and Pisa. The Eleans traced the founding of the Olympic games to their King Iphitos, who was told by the Delphi Oracle to plant the olive tree from which the victors' wreaths were made. According to Hippias of Elis, who compiled a list of Olympic victors c.400 BC, at first the only Olympic event was a 200-yard dash, called a stadium. This was the only event until 724 BC, when a two-stadia race was added. Two years later the 24-stadia event began, and in 708 the pentathlon was added and wrestling became part of the games. This pentathlon, a five-event match consisted of running, wrestling, leaping, throwing the discus, and hurling the javelin. In time boxing, a chariot race, and other events were included.

History of the Ancient Olympics Held in Olympia, Greece, every four years from somewhere around 776 B.C. they initially consisted of a one day, one event running race, covering the length of the stadium (about 190m). Over time, the event was extended to 5 days and comprised four running events (including one in armour), combat sports, a chariot race and a pentathlon (which consisted of long jump, javelin, discus, sprint and wrestling). Interestingly enough, some non-sporting events were also introduced, including a trumpeting contest. Competitors had to be free-born Greek males, who, from 750 B.C. competed in the nude (prior to that they wore shorts-like garments). Women and slaves were forbidden, under threat of death, to even attend the Olympic games, although it was possible for a woman to win an Olympic event - In the chariot race, the crown of wild olive leaves was awarded to the owner of the horses and not the drivers, hence Belistike (a woman) of Macedonia won the two-horse chariot race in 268 B.C. While exact origin is unknown, the Ancient Olympic Games were held in a sacred valley at Olympia in Elis near the western coast of Greece and the earliest recorded Olympic competition was in 776 B.C. So important were these contests that time was measured by the four-year interval between the Games; the term"Olympiad"describing this period. It is a well established fact that religious festivals in honor of Olympian Zeus had been observed in the sacred valley for several centuries previous to that remote date. The Greek Games were celebrated in the belief that the spirits of the dead were gratified by such spectacles as delighted them during their earthly life. During the Homeric age, these festivals were simply sacrifices followed by games at the tomb or before the funeral pyre. Gradually they grew into religious festivals observed by an entire community and celebrated near the shrine of the god in whose honor they were instituted. The idea then developed that the gods themselves were present but invisible and delighted in the services and the contests. Later these festivals lost their local character and became Pan-Hellenic. Four of these festivals, Olympian, Pythian, Nemean, and Isthmian, had attracted world wide attention but the one held at Olympia was by far the most important consecrated to the Olympian Zeus. The Olympic Games became the greatest festival of a mighty nation. Once every four years trading was suspended, the continuously warring states and the fighting tribes laid down their arms, and all of the people went forth in peace to pay tribute to the manhood of its nation.

J im L ucas Some Wrestling History Jim Lucas Jim's wrestling career commenced as a Freshman in high school where he was a lowly fourth string on a lowly ranked team. Within two years, Jim became a highly ranked wrestler in California making two US Junior teams. He culminated his high school career by placing 4th in the CIF State Championships in 1970. He went on to wrestle at top 20 Division I powerhouse San Jose State making All-PCAA honors in 1972, 1973 and 1974. Between 1971 and 1975 Jim was on four US dual match teams competing against premier teams from Japan, Russian, Bulgaria and Germany. During this time Jim defeated three Olympic champions. Jim took a 20 year hiatus from wrestling but when his then 6th grade son went out for the team there was no coach. Jim took the reins of the team and coached them to three consecutive runner up placings in the highly competitive Coast County Athletic League in Santa Cruz. Jim also started wrestling again during this time. He won a few local tournaments going against competitors half his age. He placed 2nd at the AAU Masters Grand Nationals in 1997, and placed in the top three of the USA Wrestling Veterans National Championships from 1998 - 2001. Jim also placed in the top ten at the Veterans World Championships during that same timeframe. Jim is the only veterans wrestler from California to have made All-America five years running. Jim is now coaching at Harbor High School in Santa Cruz where his team recently captured its first league championship in school history with a record nine wrestlers qualifying for the Central Coast Sectional Championships.

B ruce G abrielson Some Wrestling History Bruce Gabrielson - A member of the Southern Maryland Wrestling Club Hall-of-Fame, Bruce Gabrielson hails from a long time Oregon wresting family. Bruce wrestled his successful high school years at Madison HS under legendary eventual Washington State Coach Jim Smith in the early 1960s, before obtaining a wrestling scholarship and moving on to a highly successful college career at California State University Long Beach under coaches Warren Boring and Dale Deffner. During his college career he was ranked as high as first among California collegiate wrestlers at his weight. Bruce served as Asst. Coach under John Wadas while in graduate school at Long Beach as he prepared for the 1968 and 1972 GR Olympic Trials. He was also one of the coaches for the Costa Mesa Athletic Association freestyle team during the late 60s and early 70s, and was the Coach and Captain of the US Army Team at Ft Ord while serving in 1969. He also helped coach US Air Force National Team members stationed at Norton AFB in the mid to late 70s. Coach G, as he was called by his club members, moved to Maryland in the early 1980's and started coaching junior league teams where his sons were wrestling. His teams were very successful. During the 1980's he also founded Southern Maryland Wrestling Club, serving as its Head Coach until 2000. SMWC won 28 AAU Grand National Team titles plus numerous regional and state titles under Bruce's guidance.
