The Olympic Games were held every four years for more than 1,000 years, until a.d. 393, when a Roman emperor stopped them.
Some Modern Olympic Firsts The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece. A total of 312 athletes from 13 nations participated in nine sports. Women competed in the Olympic Games for the first time. For the first time, medals were awarded to the first three people to finish each event The Olympic flag was raised for the first time, and the Olympic oath was introduced. The five interlaced rings of the flag represent: Africa, America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The first Winter Olympics, featuring skiing and skating events, were held. The Olympic flame was introduced at the Olympic Games. A relay of runners carries a torch with the flame from Olympia, Greece, to the site of each Olympics. Starting with the 1994 Winter Olympics, the winter and summer Games have been held two years apart, instead of in the same year.

NEW YORK TO HOST THE WORLD IN 2003 City set to hold four major international Olympic sport competitions in 2003 January 6, 2003 New York's bid for the 2012 Olympic Games will get an important boost in 2003, as the city hosts four international Olympic sport competitions. More than 2,000 athletes from around the globe will compete in the world championships of archery and freestyle wrestling and the World Cups of fencing and triathlon. These events will help demonstrate New York's ability to - and enthusiasm for -hosting the biggest sporting event of them all. "These events will continue to stir New York's passion for Olympic sports and will help demonstrate why the city is such an exceptional home for great international competitions," NYC2012 Managing Director of Sports Wendy Hilliard said. "Each sport will get unparalleled exposure and find a wealth of enthusiastic New York fans who will cheer for athletes in their native language and welcome athletes from all over the world." The events will kick-off in June when the world's best women foil fencers return following the success of last year's World Cup stop in New York City. Men's and women's sabre fencers will hold their World Cup competition in the city simultaneously on June 12-16. "New York has a long history with the sport of fencing," said Hilliard. "The New York Fencers Club, which hosts this event, is highly experienced and we expect an enthusiastic crowd."

All of her policies and rules lead to a thinly disguised quota, called proportionality, that is impossible for male athletes to avoid or escape. Cantu says there are three ways for a school to avoid charges of discrimination: 1. Achieve proportionality (this means that you drop enough male athletes so that the percentage of female athletes equals the percentage of females
    enrolled in the school.)

There were fewer events, and only free men who spoke Greek could compete, instead of athletes from any country. Also, the games were always held at Olympia instead of moving around to different sites every time.

Women's Olympic Wrestling IOC Approves Women's Wrestling
    By Stephen Wilson
    AP Sports Writer
Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2001; 10:33 a.m. EDT The moves Wednesday by the International Olympic Committee must still be adopted by the sports' international federations before they are applied to the schedule for the Athens Games. Because the addition of women's wrestling is tied to a cut in men's wrestling events, final approval is not a certainty. The action reflected a drive by new IOC president Jacques Rogge to control the size of the Olympics. Under the previous president, Juan Antonio Samaranch, the number of sports and athletes grew steadily without any significant cuts. "This is the first time we don't increase the number of events on the program," IOC sports director Gilbert Felli said. "Until now, we added an average of 20 or more events per games since the 1950s."
