I used to suffer from it a long time ago. Today I write dozens of articles a week, perhaps five hundred a year. Earlier in my life, I would go months and months without writing a word. Why? Writers block. But I suffer no longer. The Causes What causes writers block? In my case, I've found a few causes. The idiots of the world - Occasionally I'll write something and get a negative comment. In the past when I was in my twenties (seems like a different lifetime now) this would stop me cold. I'd get a comment like "this isn't that great" or "you should change your article thusly..." and bam, I would stop writing for weeks or months. Some other failure in life - I've found that when I was failing somewhere else in life I would stop writing. You know, hard times at work, lost love, that kind of thing. When life seemed to hit me particularly hard, I would find that I didn't feel like writing at all.

This is neither practical nor healthy. Letting the expectations and standards of the outside world slip into your private sphere is almost certain to leave your mind blank within minutes. To combat this tendency, take a piece of paper and write whatever you want for as long as you like. It doesn’t matter if it’s a masterpiece or absolute crap, as long as the pressure is off. Then read it. Chances are nine out of ten that it will be some of the most real, relaxed writing you’ve done in a while. Try this exercise several more times, and pretty soon you’ll be approaching every piece as though it were simply a rough draft, with amazing results. Step Two: Remember Your Motivation Often the pressure of writing something leads one to forget why they’ve chosen to write it at all. Take a piece of paper and make a question list. Ask yourself why you started writing in the first place. When you feel yourself answer, ask “Why.” (Example: I started writing because I love the freedom. Why? In January 1997, New York Attorney General Dennis Vacco began another chapter in his crusade against online literary fraud filing a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against Edit Ink, a professional editing corporation that allegedly "ripped off thousands of aspiring authors through a nationwide network of fake literary agents and fictitious publishing houses." In the end, more than 3,600 authors had allegedly been swindled, and Edit Ink had reaped more than $5.5 million in fraudulent referral fees. You see that afternoon the words died... the dreaded writer's block, and when you are a poet, there isn’t anything that feels worse, for without the words you can’t write. I suppose the most terrifying aspect is the incredible emptiness and the fear, that you may never be able to write again. I wish I could compare it to something to make it more understandable like perhaps riding a bike but with a bike once you know how you never forget, and while most things in life are learned , such as reading and writing there is much more involved here. I guess it’s not so much the words themselves, but the style with which they are written. A style you have developed and suddenly it’s gone. This was a significant event to me because in over thirty years I’ve never ran out of words not even once, until this day. I tried to shrug it off thinking it happens to everybody but damn, not to me. Outward I maintained some semblance of humanity but inside I churned with fear that I would never be able to write again. I tried to force myself to write staring at an empty page, looking out the window trying desperately to write something, anything, just some words, but I could not even sprawl a meaningless phrase, all I could do was stare and think, stare and think .

Blank page stare The creative idea or knowledge of the project or goal is there, but when looking at the piece of paper or having the program open with the keyboard ready, the mind seems to freeze. There are times when one sails through life like a summer breeze, and times when even the simplest or best loved tasks are unfathomably difficult to achieve. For the last week or so I’ve been wading through three feet of mental mud with leaden legs and flailing arms. Partly, I think, it’s a bout of people-poisoning brought on by over-exposure to too many new acquaintances, and partly it’s due to gazing inwards for too long instead of outward. Anyway, there is no problem that can’t be solved by the application of Science. Um... well... perhaps I should say I have no problem that defeats Science. For any length of time, anyhow. After weathering a week of gathering gloom, he loaded me into the car on Saturday and we drove out to Dzalanyama Forest Reserve for a bit of remedial camping in the bushes. It’s more than a year since we visited Dzalanyama. The spine of hills curves against the Mozambique border, and gurgling peat-dark water spills off their flanks to feed the Likuni, the Lilongwe, and the Namitete Rivers as they wind their way to the lake. The woodland is thinning a little now as the autumn msasas slowly loose their leaves, but it’s still deep green and lush. The grass is at the peak of it’s glory. Tall and lion-coloured at a distance, close-to it’s a tangle of textures and shades, rich and beautiful seed-heads hung with shimmering fibres and filaments, a riot of shaded greens, golds between ginger and cream, lilacs from rose to grey. As seed-heads ripen the leaves wither to elegant ringlets, scroll down from the stem like an Elizabethan flourish. How can one doubt a Creator when faced with the perfection of grass?
