The Weblog Handbook: Practical Advice on Creating and Maintaining Your Blog
By James McNally
The first of an expected flood of books about blogging, this is also bound to be one of the smartest. Rebecca Blood was one of the first to start a weblog, launching " Rebecca's Pocket " in 1999. More importantly, Blood is a fiercely intelligent and incisive thinker on the subject, and having met her, I know that this book has been forged in the crucible of many many hours of conversations with fellow bloggers. The germ of this book was surely Blood's article " Weblogs - A History and Perspective, " which she published on her site in 2000. Knowing that she has been thinking about these issues for so long is reassuring, as is her friendly and open writing style. The practical advice given to the neophyte weblogger is useful enough, though most of the other books will cover that aspect. However, I would revise the subtitle of the book to read "The Theory and Practice of Weblogging." I've read advance chapters of some of the other books on blogging, and no one else delves as deeply into the meatier aspects than Blood. Ethics, etiquette, the debate over "weblogs as journalism," the self-reflection of the burgeoning weblog "community": all these subjects and more fall under the purview of this surprisingly dense little book. Another pleasant surprise is the price. Rather than another graphics-heavy "how-to" computer book, complete with $50 price tag, this is a book packed with insights for under $20. Grab this one before the flood of "me-too" books arrive. You'll be glad you spent your money on this rather than "Blogging for Dummies." Trust me.

Writing an Effective Business Plan
By Julie King
Page 1 - Introduction So you want – or need – to write a business plan. You might be looking for debt or equity financing, or maybe you need to to develop a blueprint to help you build your business. Either way, a comprehensive business plan is a useful tool that can help you meet your goals. As we were starting CanadaOne I wrote a business plan for our company that won the 1997/98 National Business Plan Competition for Young Entrepreneur, to which over 500 plans were submitted. Since that time I've done many presentations on the basics of writing a business plan, and I've also written plans for other companies. In this workshop I'll explain the basics of creating a business plan, based on my own experience and input from other professionals who are tasked with writing and reviewing plans on a regular basis. After all, even the Tin Woodsman, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion received papers and trinkets to prove they had heart, wisdom and courage. If you'd like your own graduate certificate, we'd be happy to send you one for a small shipping and handling fee. At first I was unsure how useful an online workshop would be but I found I learned just as much as in a classroom and actually conversed with the other students more than in another classroomwe were able to share helpful information with each other."

Indeed, the folks at MKW value a command of language—not only in hall-of-fame ad pros, but also in industry newbies. Scott Spencer, the agency’s director of media and PR, lists among the vital skills of a creative: "Writing. Writing, writing, writing." To clarify: "Learn how to write," he advises. "It’s so important. Even if you’re a designer, understanding how words work is very important." For help, consult the Little Ad School House, where the lesson " how to write real good " explains how advertising copywriting differs from technical writing, journalism and novel authorship—and gives tips on copy length, writing style and editing. Taking a Writing for the Web Class? Don't Get Ripped Off!
by John December Imagine signing up for a creative writing class and finding out the instructor covers no more than touch typing. You may have paid a thousand or more dollars for the course. You eagerly anticipated expanding your creative skills with language and growing your appreciation of how language can evoke experience. But on the first day, you find out that the text for the course is Teach Yourself Typing . The instructor describes, with enthusiasm, how you will soon master the keyboardyou'll know all the keys, all the keystroke combinations, and how to properly insert and take out paper. This, the instructor breathlessly tells you, will make you a writer! No doubt, you would be disappointed if such a scenario happened in a class you took. What institution would offer such a ludicrous course? Probably none. But many institutions are offering something similar: poorly constructed courses about "writing for the World Wide Web." The Web has exploded in popularity. Many organizations and institutions need people to develop Web sites, yet there is little training for Web content developers. Therefore, the higher education industry justifiably salivates at the opportunity to fill this gap. Many higher educational institutions, having difficulty drawing customers, offer "Writing for the Web" classes. These courses raise the profile of the institutionshowing off "cutting edge" technology (despite the fact that writing for the Web has been going on for about a half-decade).

Name-calling was on the rise and violence seemed imminent. Urbandale's ESL students come mostly from Bosnia but also from Sudan, Albania, Vietnam, Mexico, Poland and Brazil. These students identified a crisis and wanted to address it, but they weren¹t certain how to proceed. Meeting after school in the ESL classroom, these newcomer and refugee students began to create the "Peace Project," a student-centered, interactive presentation designed to improve relationships among immigrant students and their native peers. With the approval and enthusiastic support of the high school principal and their ESL teacher, a cadre of 30 students developed an outline for their "Peace Project" program. They decided to visit content area classes such as social studies.
