Your entry to a specialist market One of the liveliest demands for new material is for children's writing. Books for the very young are as important as ever and, despite television and computers, teenage fiction is popular as never before. Not only that, but this course has been developed especially to meet a keen requirement from our existing and would-be students. One of the attractions of writing for children is that often it paves the way into the market for adult work; another that it is refreshingly different from all other writing genres. Often stories (such as Winnie the Pooh) develop from being told to our own children. Three main areas of help This course helps in three main ways. Firstly, it should give students confidence to develop their own originality. Secondly, it will improve the technique of writing, helping the growth of strong points and overcoming weak ones. Finally, though inevitably this has to be placed first within the course itself, it defines markets that will not only help maximise the chances of successful publication, but possibly prevent wasted time since publishers' requirements are often pretty specific, especially regarding age ranges, length and therefore price.

A Review of "The Business of Writing for Children" by Aaron Shepard
Reviewed By Angela Giles Klocke As a writer, I like to dabble in many different areas, and writing for children is no exception. Thus far, I haven't had much luck. In fact, other than a few short stories I wrote and sold to my old newspaper, I've had no luck. Simply put, I was missing some very important pieces of knowledge, but not anymore. I received The Business of Writing for Children directly from the author, Aaron Shepard. It was one of those unrequested but wonderful surprises that arrive and make your day. But it did more than make my day. It helped me see the error of my ways. The Business of Writing for Children is an easy-to-read and understand softcover book, billing itself as "An Award-Winning Author's Tips on How to Write, Sell, and Promote Your Children's Books," and it delivers just that. At only 115 pages, Shepard crams the book full of expert advice on everything from writing the perfect children's story to getting it sold, and then promoting it for better sales. He includes many samples on formatting your children's manuscript, putting it into script format, how to create your own book flyer, and more. But my favorite section of the book would have to be Part 1 - The Basics. Part 1 is an important primer to get you going on to the rest. This is a book that belongs in the hands of all who wish to write for children, and even for those who already do so. We can never learn too much, and

  • Have a very clear idea of the age group you’re writing for. Vocabulary, content and length has to be spot on. Avoid sexism, rascism and anything that is going to immiediately stand out as old fashioned. Publishers or agents will spot flaws a mile off. If you’re aiming at young people rather than children, it helps to be aware of the

ABOUT CHILDREN'S WRITING
  • I HAVE A STORY I'VE WRITTEN FOR CHILDREN. DO I NEED TO FIND SOMEONE TO ILLUSTRATE IT BEFORE I CAN SEND IT TO A PUBLISHER?
No. In fact, in cases where the author of a picture book is not also an artist, the publisher prefers to find its own illustrator for the book. The reason for this: often a publisher will match up a new author with a more experienced illustrator who has some name-recognition among book stores and teachers. Also, publishers have a stable of illustrators they have cultivated, and are always looking for new manuscripts for these illustrators to work on. Finally, publishers have a certain "look" they have developed for their individual lists, and the illustrator you choose for your manuscript may not have a style that fits with other books already published by that house. If you do know an artist that you want to work with, you can submit illustrations with your manuscript, but be prepared that the editor may like only the writing or only the illustrations and won't want to buy the entire package.

93. Pamela Jane - For Kids: Secrets And Suprises About Writing
children's book author Pamela Jane tells how she gets ideas for writing.
http://www.pamelajane.com/kids.html
The first book I wrote, Noelle of the Nutcracker , illustrated by Jan Brett, is about a little girl who loves to dance and an ambitious ballerina doll who wants to star in the Nutcracker ballet. After I wrote Noelle, children began asking me if I wanted to be a ballerina when I grew up. Look at this picture of me dressed up for in my third-grade ballet recital. Do I look like someone who is excited about dancing? If you said NO you are right! I was a terrible ballerina. I have a big toe that won't bend and I can't do the splits. But I had a wonderful time writing about a little girl who loves to dance. That is one of the special things about writing. You can use your imagination to step into the lives and hearts of other people. Noelle of the Nutcracker
