The objective of this Digest is to set out some conventional wisdom for the construction of multiple-choice tests, which are one of the most common forms of teacher-constructed tests. The comments which follow are applicable mainly to multiple-choice tests covering fairly broad topic areas. Before proceeding, it will be useful to establish our terms for discussing multiple-choice items. The "stem" is the introductory question or incomplete statement at the beginning of each item and this is followed by the options.
